AUSBOY
Oct 21st, 2003, 02:11 AM
2nd week of the Aussie Circuit heats up with a number of Asian players heading Down Under strengthening the field.

So who's gonna win this week?

Will we see Evie and Samantha Stosur bounce back like last year when they lost coincidentally lost 2nd and 1st round respectfully to then meet in the final.

Will Trudi recover from her thigh injury to play?

Who will get the Wildcards this week?

Will McQuillan, McShea or Dittmann win a match?

Who's gonna qualify?

Good luck to my faves in the main draw especially Monique :)...with any luck Evie will get the two red hot qualifiers from last week (Klaschka or Hazlett) and lose! lol.

I like how they are choosing WC's....you have to EARN them this time :) But how did Trudi get in? SE?

I like how they are choosing WC's....you have to EARN them this time :) But how did Trudi get in? SE?

Trudi was always in. The person who originally posted the commitments had only 19 in the main draw which was incorrect, it should have been 21!

Trudi's rank 6 weeks ago was higher than Bryanne's thats why she had automatic entry to main draw!

First week Wildcards were given to the 3 highest ranked players to miss the cut off to the main draw.

This week they were given to the 3 best performers from last week that didnt have automatic entry into the main draw this week

Wow some great results there by Gaby Baker and Kate Pinchbeck!

Fantastic to see Gaby get some of her confidence and form back, its amazing what two wins in a row can do to bring up your confidence.

Also good to see Emily Hewson and Dubravka qualify. Shame it was at the expense of Lisa and Cindy.

I'm hoping that Hisamatsu or Nakamura missed their flight from Japan hehe and that Cindy gets in as a lucky loser! :p She might end up replacing Trudi, who knows!

Interesting that Pinchbeck, Stone and Breadmore all went to the same school and all within a grade of each other too!

Mind you Wesley had them all on tennis scholarships! Well Laurens might have been part academic not 100% sure

why would jelena dokic play a 25k event???
oh, nothing, just that Jelena (trained in Australia) reached Wim SF at 16,
while some of the Aussie girls are struggling in 25K's,
not that they are bad or anything, but i mean c'mon,
Jelena doesnt come every year or 2, so good luck Australian tennis:)

What hideous results

4 of the 5 Aussies that got through, only got through because they played another Aussie!

Glad that Cindy got a run in the main draw.

Still a shocking list of Aussie casualties with 12 of the 17 being eliminated!

Still at least Mireille had a convincing win, she'll need the confidence for her next match, she's had some tight battles against Grandin before!

Grandin leads 2-1 in H2H's

1999 $10,000 Warrnambool 32 Grass (O) M.DITTMANN 6-2 7-6
2000 $25,000 Nuriootpa 32 Hard (O) N.GRANDIN 6-4 3-6 5-7
2001 $25,000 Surbiton QF Grass (O) N.GRANDIN 4-6 3-6

C'mon Aussies, get your act together, we can still have 4 semi-finalists here hehehe

Anyone know anything about Pinchbeck - she's won a few matches in quallies the last 2 weeks.

Bryanne has lost to Rachel a few times, so this was a good win.

Good effort from Casey!

i saw one of my friends play aginst katie at the wollongong anniversary open...shes got a fairly small build, but is very fit and gives the ball a big whack shot for shot! she chopped Sophie Fergusson in the final with very good use of the court, her angles are good..

Some interesting set of results...great to see Bryanne get a big win like that. Rachel's not the same player she was even 12 months ago, but still that's a big scalp for a slumping Bryanne :)

I expected Gaby to get mauled by Viratprasert, but good effort to qualify...nice routine win for Evie, but a loss in the second round wouldn't surprise

Dubz said in her thread in the junior forum (go check it out if you haven't) that she got chopped by Monique, and I imagine how well Monique must be playing right now! Great to see :) Good luck Monique, go as far as you can, you deserve it!

Tough loss for Casey but a respectable scoreline. I was expecting Breadmore to lose easily to Hazlett. Lauren has no confidence at the moment and will struggle to defend her ranking next year.

Only 1 Aussie into the Quarter Finals

Thats totally pathetic, considering we were guaranteed 1 Quarter Finalist with that whole section with only Aussies in it.

Evie - serves u right for not playing in Europe! I'll be happy to see you play qualifying at the Australian Open!!!

Mireille - I've lost count of the 7-6's and the 7-5's you keep losing, same as Cindy, you both gotta step it up and close out these sets.

Monique - Well Done, keep it going!

Kriz - Always hard to follow a big upset with another win, still a good week for her. Her ranking will be up into the 440's after these points are added in 2 weeks time.

Bryanne - 15.5 points now in 2 weeks, Had only 16 to defend for the whole Australian Circuit right through until the end of the Australian Open so its only going to be up from here!

Duebbers wins Rockhampton
Monday, 27 October, 2003

ROCKHAMPTON, Qld - Germany's Nina Duebbers today won the all European final of the Rockhampton Uncle Toby's International when she defeated Dessislava Topalova from Bulgaria 7-5 6-1.

After a slow start Duebbers took charge of the final winning in just over one hour. Topalova dominated the first six games as she raced to a 5-1 lead in the hot and windy conditions. At this stage of the match Duebbers seemed hesitant and was having trouble controlling her big match nerves. When she finally broke the serve of Topalova, Duebbers settled down and dramatically reduced her unforced errors.

Now it was the German's turn to take control of the rallies and surprised the substantial crowd by clawing her way back to level the match at 5-5 games all. Topalova, who served so strongly in yesterday's semi-final against South African Natalie Grandin, suddenly lost her rhythm in the gusty conditions and Duebbers completed the first set by winning six games in a row.

Topalova appeared to lose heart in the second set as the strongly built Duebbers started to dictate the rallies. The tally of unforced errors climbed for Topalova as she became more dejected. On the other hand Duebbers liked the role of front runner and was playing very confidently, especially when compared with the first six games of the match.

The added confidence saw Duebbers win the first five games of the second set. Topalova won her only game of this set before succumbing to the big serve of her opponent. It is the first time that Duebbers has won the Rockhampton Uncle Toby's International and she was delighted with her win.

In the doubles final the number one seeds Trudi Musgrave from Newcastle and Abigail Spears from San Diego, USA, won an entertaining final in straight sets. They came from a break of serve down in the second set to win 6-1 7-5 over Natalie Grandin of South Africa and Martina Muller from Germany.
