Very weak draw, even by low $10K standards...

Have to think that Montinee will take this one.

Montinee Tangphong and Thassha Vitayaviroj have both withdrawn from this tournament in the last few days. Montinee is currently quite hot (having just won a Jakarta $10K, beating Sania in the process) so this is really good news for Jaya...

A small tidbit in a Nigerian newspaper from today:

In the ladies’ singles draw, top seed from India, Sai Jayalakshmy plays South African Lizaan Du Plessis while Yomna Farid from Egypt confronts second seed Michelle Snyman.

Who knows what round they're referring to! ;)

Here's some scores and text I found from a Nigerian newspaper today:

Pretty-looking Noha Mohsen, 19, started the winning streak for Egypt when she waltzed easily through her Indian foe, Liza Pereira in quick sets of 6-1, 6-4, and she later admitted that the match turned up easier than she had thought given that her foe is the tourney’s third seed.

"Compared to my second round game against Rebecca Dandeniya, this was an easier match because I was dictating the pace of the game from start to finish. Being the first Egyptian to play, it was certainly a good way to start and I believe my other colleagues would be inspired through this", said a jubilant Mohsen.

And that streak of Pharaoh’s good fortune did extend first to dashing Heidi El Tabakh, who blitzed past Croat Marija Abramovic in two sets of 6-2, 6-1 and later to Farid Yomna who came back from a set down, and down 1-4 in second set to upstage tourney’s second seed in three sets of 3-6, 6-4, 6-2.

Having made so many errors in first set, Farid, an astute base-liner, drew inspiration from her concerned coach, Kareem Izaher and other counterparts to teach Snyman a lesson on how not to step the foot off the pedal in the course of the game. It was a pulsating match in the blistering sunshine of Lagos but Yomna soaked all up and won a match she reckoned was the toughest she had faced yet.

"It was a tough match but somehow I drew support from my coach by playing the ball into the court and wait for what she could give. It is nice to win and get into the semi-final to play against Heidi", said Yomna. Heidi feels the same way. "It would be fun playing against Farid because she is more into the circuit but I will give it my best shot but either way victory goes, it would be fun", she said.

Egyptian coach, Kareem Izaher certainly feels today’s tie between Farid and Heidi would be tough and exciting. The courts of the Lagos lawn tennis club is surely the place to be for all faithfuls of tennis
