All the best Marta :) :D

I remember when last year SATRISTA7 wrote that Marta was his discovery of the tournament in Cardiff. She played really well and won 3 difficult matches before loosing to Kalyuzhnaya in the main draw 7/5 4/6 3/6. So maybe she likes the place and has good memories from there. That's a good point to start :)
Good Luck Marta!!!

Satrista's treport from last year: "My discovery of the day was Marta Domachowska - I saw the doubles match between Domachowska/Boulykina and Diaz-Oliva/Pullin in full. It's hard to believe she's only 16 - as well as hitting with incredible power she also plays with excellent composure. It was unfortunate, then, that she was partnered with Irina Boulykina, who is, to be honest, a bit rubbish. (...)I swear Marta D would have done better playing on her own (...) Watch out for Domachowska. I personally expect to see her in the top 100 in a few years' time".
Satrista7, are you going to the tournamnet this year?

I made the journey up the M5 and along the M4 today, and was rewarded by wins for Jane and Sarah. Both were playing well, and it's good to see them winning matches at this level; it will only take some consistency, which together with the confidence should come before too long if they can just keep winning. Jane in particular seems to have a powerful 'weight of shot', while Sarah played many long rallies and had the determination to come through.

It may have been Sarah that had to withdraw from the doubles; the trainer came on court for her during the second set of her 3-set singles win, but let's hope she'll be fit tomorrow ready to win through to the semis.

Kirsten Flipkens, yes, seems to play confidently. I thought I saw numerous inside-out-forehands from her, and again she seems to play pretty well. Being from Belgium, she'll no doubt be aspiring to the standards set by certain others from those parts!

Well done to Sarah Borwell, nice to see some results for her this week. Good luck to Jane.

Also good luck to Claire Curran in the dubs, though there was an interview with her in the paper today and she was saying her partner Senoglu has the flu at the moment and is feeling really unwell.

Wow, everything's gone pretty much as I would've predicted after watching the Thursday matches :)

Sorry about the delay for the report, I've been very busy the past couple of days. Here it is... Thursday.

Lots of random little kids scurrying around. I think there was a school trip or something... anyway, the sight of Claire Peterzan being mobbed for autographs by eight-year-olds has to be one of the more surreal sights I've ever seen. They kept asking everyone whether they played tennis or not... Marta Domachowska's coach told them to shut up at one point. Go coach :D

Sandra Kloesel d. Marta Domachowska 7-6(3), 3-6, 6-3
This was the match I specifically wanted to see, and the match of the day by far. Marta was looking gorgeous in black (split skirt!), and she's got a lot more powerful since I saw her last year, and in particular her first serve is a huge weapon now - I lost track of the number of aces she served. Second serve is clever, but possibly still needs an injection of pace. Her forehand seems the bigger weapon, but really her groundstrokes are potent on both wings - she needs to learn a) when to really go for her shots and b) when not to, though.
Sandra was really impressive - it's easy to understand why she's such a great Challenger player. She makes very, very few errors but has enough power and aggression to ensure that she's not forced into being defensive all the time, and she could easily live with Marta's pace. Coupled with her own strong serve and a readiness to fight when down, her consistency probably made the difference. Marta was up 4-1 in the first and was still the more dominant of the two going into the TB, but a few loose shots at the start really killed her chances... I didn't see the second set, but the key game was Kloesel's service game at 4-3 up in the third - about a million deuces, both girls got diddled on crappy line calls on game point, and ultimately it was Sandra who rode that momentum to victory.
Marta was being cheered on very vocally by her coach and a stunning Lina K lookalike (sister?), who obviously both desperately wanted her to win... he gave her a hug afterwards though, I think everyone knew she'd played very well.

Jane O'Donoghue d. Olha Lazarchuk 6-3, 6-1
Pretty comfortable for Jane, she harnessed her power very well and was her usual feisty self on court. Olha doesn't appear to have enough power in her game, but she looked generally disgusted with herself throughout so maybe it was just a bad day.

Francesca Lubiani d. Stanislava Hrozenska 6-3 6-4
I didn't see the first set, but the second - such a major choke job from Stani. Francesca's got nice variety and amazing defence, but really Stani should have blown her away... she went 4-0 up in the second with, like, no trouble at all. Then she got angry over a couple of line calls, and pretty much couldn't put the ball in court for the next five games, getting more and more emotional with every point. Francesca tried to choke herself when serving for it, but despite fluffing about five MPs Stani still sucked too much to take advantage

Sybille Bammer d. Valentina Sassi 6-2, 6-3
Didn't see too much of this, but Bammer plays like her name ;) Valentina was cheering Kloesel on during the Marta-Sandra match. One of the linesmen for this match was simply

Irina Boulykina d. Suzanne van Hartingsveldt 2-6, 6-3, 6-3
Wow, Irina has improved out of sight since last year. She's still... er... let's just say her conditioning needs to improve a lot, though. I didn't see the first set, but the pattern of the second was fairly simple: either Irina would take control of the point, clout the ball from corner to corner and win it, or Suzanne would make her run and lose it. Irina's got amazingly heavy groundstrokes - she reminds me a lot of Lindsay pre-weight loss - and she really throws her entire body into her shots. She even had enough confidence by the end to hit a running winner  Good fighting spirit, too. Needs to get a new hairstyle though, that fringe is hideous. SVH is boring and has a boring game and I was bored by her.

Nina Bratchikova d. Chantal Coombs 6-4, 7-5
Nina and Chantal are both gorgeous :hearts: (though obviously Marta and Marta's sister took the tournament honours in this category). They both have game, too - Chantal has nice volleys, Nina great groundies - but unfortunately it wasn't working for either girl today... the first set was an exercise in how to fluff won points. Whoever took control of the rally invariably ended up losing it. Both were getting very frustrated, especially as they knew that the other wasn't on top form... ultimately Nina just has more game.

Sarah Borwell d. Giulia Casoni 6-4, 2-6, 6-3
Hmm, neither were amazingly good but Sarah does play a nice clean game, and her serve was OK. Giulia got very down on herself and was very grumpy towards the latter stages of the match.

Kirsten Flipkens d. Virginie Pichet 6-3, 6-1
Flipkens is an exercise in perpetual motion... her footwork is amazing, and as has been noted the inside-out forehand is her big weapon. Virginie appeared to be putting in minimal effort. Didn't see much of this. Not surprised that Flipkens lost to Bammer, but would have expected a better scoreline.

When I was there on Thursday I heard Sarah B talking to someone straight after her 2nd round match and mentioning how she had choked in a match a week or two previously. But she was talking in a confident tone suggesting that she'd learnt and would not let herself choke again. When I saw yesterday's close SF scoreline I just wondered - did she choke? if she was 5-3 up and serving in the final set then maybe.

Oh well, I'm sure she'll learn, and next year should be a good year for Sarah.
