Lakhani sees off fancied Napaporn
Published on Aug 16, 2003

[TENNIS] Unfancied Indian Isha Lakhani staged the biggest upset of the US$10,000 (Bt420,000) Suranaree Open yesterday by knocking out second-seed Napaporn Tongsalee of Thailand 2-6 6-3 6-4 in the quarter-finals at the Suranaree University of Technology.

The 18-year-old lefthander fought hard after losing the first set by playing some fantastic lobs and deep spin shots, forcing Napaporn, the world No 309, to make a slew of unforced errors. The Indian sealed the match in one hour and 49 minutes.

It was a day of disappointment for local players as Thai top junior Montinee Tangphong also crashed out of the tournament. Title-holder Liza Andriyani of Indonesia relied on her experience, backhand slices and lobs to dismiss the error-prone teenager 6-1 6-3 in 67 minutes.

Top-seed Kim Jin-hee took one hour and 15 minutes to beat world junior top-10 Ryoko Fuda of Japan 6-1 7-5 in a match that saw protracted baseline rallies. The other semi-final slot was earned by Taiwanese third-seeded Chuang Chia-jung, who downed countrywoman Chan Chin-wei 6-3 6-4.

Ranked No 692 in the world, Lakhani started off sluggishly, losing her serves twice to let the Thai second seed build a quick 5-2 lead. The Indian had a double break in the eighth game but squandered them all. The set ended when Lakhani's backhand hit the net but landed out of the court.

In the second set, the Indian girl led 3-2 and began controlling the match with a consistent baseline game while the Thai became jittery and started making errors.

Napaporn was broken in the fourth game, which was enough to send the Indian through the set.

After a 10-minute break, Napaporn came back strongly on court, breaking her young opponent to lead 2-0. Lakhani struck back to draw level at 2-2 and then 3-3. She finally managed a break when the Thai pounded a forehand into the net to gain the upper hand at 4-3.

The Indian missed an overhead smash and two easy returns to allow Napaporn to stay alive at 5-4. But serving for the match in the next game, Lakhani looked poised and accurate in her baseline game as she closed out the match when the Thai again netted a forehand.

"I didn't have my momentum in the first set. But in the second and third sets I was more focused and consistent and did not let her play the shots she would have liked to,'' said the girl from Bombay - who has a huge challenge in the form of last week's champion Chuang in the semi-final today.

"She is a very good player. She is more experienced than me,'' said Lakhani who is reaching the semi-finals of a US$10,000 ITF event for the first time. She hoped the heat might turn out to be an advantage for her in today's match.

In the doubles semi-final, top duo Chan Chin-wei and Chuang Chia-jung of Taiwan easily moved past the Indonesian pairing of Maya Rosa and Sandy Gumulya 6-0 6-4.

They will battle for the title against China's Dong Yan-hua and Zhang Yao, who edged out Indonesian Andriyani and Diana Julianto 3-6 6-2 7-5.

Kim, Lakhani clash in final
Published on Aug 17, 2003

[TENNIS] Top seed Kim Jin-hee of South Korea and Indian dark-horse Isha Lakhani will battle it out for the women's singles trophy this morning in the final of the US$10,000 Suranaree Open ITF Women's Circuit event at the Suranaree University of Technology.

World No 242 Kim lived up to her top seeding when she ousted defending champion Liza Andriyani of Indonesia 6-2 6-3 in only 64 minutes, while the unfancied teenager Lakhani surprised title favourite and third-seeded Chuang Chia-jung of Taiwan 6-4 6-2 in only 65 minutes.

Kim, a 22-year-old from Seoul, made amends for her early exit to Japan's Ryoko Fuda last week at Muang Thong Thani, utilising powerful deep groundstokes into the corners to win yesterday's semi-final.

"I am happy to reach the final and I am confident that I can win tomorrow [today],'' said Kim, who last won a US$10,000 ITF event in Tokyo two years ago.

The 18-year-old Lakhani also had unimpressive result at Muang Thong with a loss in the first round), but proved Friday's surprise victory over second-seeded Napaporn Tongsalee of Thailand was no fluke.

"I did not play well last week but I took that opportunity to observe how these players play. I am more focussed and determined this week and that's why I have been playing well,'' said the Bombay-based Lakhani.

In the doubles final, Chuang put behind her singles semi-final loss to team up with countrywoman Chan Chin-wei to beat China's Dong Eun-hye and Choi Young-ja of South Korea 6-4 6-1 for the trophy.

Top seed Kim was in high gear from the start, breaking the 2002 champion twice with her superior baseline game to lead 5-2. She then moved Andriyani off the court before whacking a forehand winner onto open space to set up a set point at 30-40 in the eighth game. The South Korean punished a weak second serve with a winner into the corner to wrap up the opener.

Kim came back from a break down to take a 4-3 lead with her powerful baseline game in the second set. She managed a crucial break in the eighth game after Andriyani double faulted. The top seed fired a passing shot to reach match point at 40-15 and closed out the match after Andriyani's backhand slice sailed wide.

In the day's second semi-final between Chuang and Lakhani, the Taiwanese was below par, hitting balls into the net or out of court.

The Indian girl counter-punched with powerful balls and played a solid defence when she needed it most. She broke the error-prone Taiwanese to lead 5-4 and the took the first set.

The left-handed Lakhani played more consistently and built a 5-2 lead in the second set. She whacked a second serve ace to lead 40-15 and took the match when a lob from Chuang went long.

Lakhani earned her first final slot in her sixth ITF tournament. She has never competed against Kim before but is positive going into the final, which starts at 9.30am today.

"I have nothing to lose. Kim is a better player and has a higher ranking. I just have to think positive and try my best,'' said the Indian, ranked No 692 in the world.

Meanwhile, local twins Sonchat and Sanchai Ratiwatana made it to their third ITF doubles final after their semi-final victory in the US$10,000 Romania Rafo Tiriac Trophy ITF Men's Futures event in Bucharest, Romania, on Friday.

The Thai duo, who won the doubles trophy in Timisoara, also In Romania, last week, beat Theodoros Angelinos and Alexander Jakupovic of Greece 7-6 (7-1) 6-4 for a chance to win back to back titles.

Sorry i did not go this week's $10K Nakhon Rachasima. It takes more than 3 hours from Bangkok.

Isha and her mother were so nice when I asked her for the picture in last week's $10K Nonthaburi. She gave me e-mail address and asked me to send the pictures to her.

Lakhani clinches first title
Published on Aug 18, 2003

[TENNIS] Giant-killer Isha Lakhani of India claimed her first professional title yesterday, overpowering top seed Kim Jin-hee of South Korea 6-4 2-6 6-3 in the final of the US$10,000 (Bt416,300) ITF Women's Circuit Suranaree Open.

Competing in ideal conditions at the Suranaree University of Technology tennis venue, the 18-year-old out-rallied, outwitted and outlasted the world No 242 in one hour and 45 minutes in a nail-biting baseline duel which proved a treat for the crowd.

"I was focussed and determined to win this week," Lakhani said after the match. "I am happy to win my first title but I don't want to enjoy it too much, because I have to play in another tournament in Colombo next week."

Lakhani will depart Bangkok for Sri Lanka tonight.

On the road to her title victory, the world No 692 upset three seeded players: eighth-seeded Ryoko Takemura of Japan in round one, second-seeded Napaporn Tongsalee of Thailand in the quarter-final, and third-seeded Chuang Chia-jung of Taiwan in the semis.

"I was an underdog and had nothing to lose," the Bombay-based lefthander said. "I just go out there and think positive, telling myself that I can do it."

Lakhani picked up $1,600 for winning the tournament, while Kim had to be content with the $1,000 prize for the runner-up.

The Indian was very solid out of the gate, losing just a few points on her serves, while the top seed appeared sluggish from the heat. Pounding aggressive groundstrokes, Lakhani managed to break Kim's serve early in the first game. It was the only service break in the set, but proved enough to hand Lakhani an early 1-0 advantage after she missed with a backhand long for set point but gave Kim too much to handle on the following point.

In the second set, both players broke each other's serve several times. At 3-2 in Kim's favour, Lakhani appeared to lose her concentration, committing a flurry of unforced errors to hand the next three games to her opponent. Though she recovered to save four set points, the Indian finally ran out of miracles with a wide backhand that sent the match to a decisive third set.

After a 10-minute break, Lakhani went out 2-0 ahead early, but Kim fought back to level the set at two games apiece. Then the unseeded upset artist turned up the heat, hammering fierce groundstrokes with pinpoint precision just inside the legal area, breaking Kim's serve twice and vaulting out in front 5-2.

Serving for the match, Lakhani lost a bit of her control, allowing Kim to gain a set as the Indian lost her serve on unforced errors.

Now leading 5-3, she stormed through the deciding game, earning match point on an errant forehand return from Kim and following it with the winner on a forehand of her own down the line.

Next week's tournament in Colombo is on a clay surface, and Lakhani, who hopes to break the top 400 this year, said she hopes the transition from hardcourt play to clay will not be too difficult.

"I like clay so I hope everything will be ok for me,'' she said.
