Here is a long report from my time at the Bronx Challenger on Saturday/Sunday. On saturday, I watched a few mens matches and saw alot of players practicing.

Sunday Matches
Muller vs. Pitu...this was a very high quality match. Muller won because in the end she was more aggressive. Muller has zero confidence on her serve. She hit so many horrible double faults. There was a young guy there who was really supporting her and giving her encouraging words and looks. Aside from the serve, their is nothing wrong with Muller’s game. Her groundies were very solid, she has very nice power. Its all mental. Pitu...what can I say about Pitu...her confidence is even lower than Martina’s. Pitu lacks passion. She looks as if she is just going thru the motions. She needs more power if she is ever to get into the top 100. She is a very smart player. She really mixes up her game very well, nice angles and she has those down the line shots measured. Martina ran down everything and frustrated Pitu. Pitu would hit a great shot and Martina would float it back and start the point over and eventually Pitu would make the error. Here serve is also very average...not enough racquet head speed.

Avants vs. Arn...no match. Avants slaughtered her. Cory Ann was on fire...damn that girl can hit the ball hard and she has some sweet angles...she has really improved her serve and she hit quite a few one handed FH’s. Greta tried her heart out but she was just no match for Cory Ann. Cory Ann was returning Greta’s serve faster than Greta’s serve. I still think Cory Ann can work on her serve more and her movement and this girl can be big...For a few games I thought I was looking at Monica in her prime. Some amazing winners at impossible angles. It was truly and impressive display of tennis.

Shenay vs. Pin...Shenay is a total headcase. It took her about 7 MP’s to take this match. The first two she had when Pin was serving at 4-5 in the second. This is after Shenay served for the match at 5-3. It was a very high quality match. They are both very crafty. Shenay has lots of power when she chooses to pull it out. She hit some great FH’s that just blew by Pin. Her slice is very deep and low. But her regular BH really needs work. She has a great serve. I think her problem is that she has so many weapons that she has to learn how to use them effectively. Pin hits the ball so soft, its incredible to watch. She wins matches based on her smarts. But you can clearly see how big hitters would just overpower her.

Wheeler vs. Tuchband...Jennifer should have won this match, she lost it because she is FAT. At the end of the third set, she was leaning on the back fence more than she was playing. She outplayed Christina in every way. She has a nice FH and solid BH. Nice power and great angles. She is very smart, but she has got to lose a few kilos if she is going to try to play the pro game. I mean the girl had a GUT hanging out. Her serve is also too flat...not enough topspin, especially on the second.

Rika vs Geznenge was much more competitive than the scoreline. Maria just played the big points better. Maria will never be anything more than a challenger player. She has nothing special. She is however, a very sweet girl. I think her Coach is black. I mention this because of the rarity.

Kelly vs. Abramovic...very competitive. If Kelly had a better serve(even though it has improved) she might have won this match. Ivana is very cute. She is very competitive and fought for every point.

Sun vs. Dabek...Sun was on in the first set. She was just nailing her shots. Poor Tiffany was just running side to side and got completely overpowered. Then Tiffany changed her tactics and got everything back. Sun got frustrated and starting going for too much and making errors. Sun is clearly the better player. Lots of power and aggression. She was really disappointed by the loss. If Sun keeps working hard, she can really go places. I was very impressed. I saw her on the practice courts on Saturday and I was in awe of her game, even before I knew her name. She was the most impressive hitter of the 10 or 15 girls that were on the practice court.

Jenny vs. Abigail...crazy match, with two players who are so below their potential. Abi is still carrying around too many extra pounds. I’ve said it before. If she got herself a real coach, this girl could be really good. Abi hits the ball as hard as anyone in the top ten and when she gets that first serve in...its HUGE...What can I say about Jenny...the confidence is in the TOILET. She won because she was more consistent and moved better. Her slice looked good, but her serve was really all over the place. She was working with some tall middle aged guy...didnt get his name. Her mom was no where in sight...thank goodness. She looks very sad. I just don’t know if Jenny will ever find her way back into the top 100?

Chanelle vs. Petra...great match...Chanelle is so pretty and Petra is the opposite ;). Petra was just a lil more consistent. Chanelle needs to drop some pounds...she too had a gut. Her serve needs lots of work.

Kirilenko vs. Lastra...no contest. Masha was killing her off the ground. I have to say that even though I think Masha has a nice game, she has nothing special. She needs more power on her shots and she has to improve that serve. I dont know where she is headed, but she will be interesting to follow. Nothing about her game jumps out as outstanding. Masha looks so sad, all the girls there were hanging around each other and laughing and Masha was always with her coach. It didnt seem that she had any friends.

That is all folks....sorry its so long. Forgot to mention that I saw Gisela...she looked great. She was with the same people who were with Pitu. I was really shocked how many of these girls were carrying around too much kilos ;). I saw alot of them last year and most have not improved much. Saw Rodionova...she is very pretty and has a great personality. Also say Keothavong, Rao, and Poutchek.

Great to hear about Cory Ann doing so well!! I saw her play Cindy Watson in US Open qualies last year and she lost something like 4 points in the first 5 games. I wasn't sure if she would ever get back that "Monica in her prime" form that I saw in those games, but it's nice to see she can do it for a whole match!

However, her problem is streakiness. Odds are she'll play an awful match in round 2 or 3 of qualifying, go down a set and 5-1 before FINALLY turning it on only to realize it's too little too late.

Cory Ann isn't a main candidate on the list for a qualy WC. She's something like the 1st or 2nd alternate for one. She'd have to qualify here and then probably reach the quarters or semis for them to consider changing it.
