ghosts Jul 31st, 2003, 07:04 AM Good luck to Geznenge and Drake :) ;)
lin Jul 31st, 2003, 07:27 AM Mi-Ra :(:(
Eric_tennis Jul 31st, 2003, 08:19 AM According to the report of a spectator, Mi-ra lost to Drake 6-2,1-6,5-7.
Mi-ra was leading 5-4, 30-0 in 3rd set,.. then miss a easy shot at net. Then lost her momentum. There were many deuces in the last 2 games, but she couldn't take the chance. :(
And according to the report, Drake was not very nice to the spectators and her opponent. I'm sorry to hear that. :( I just hope Mi-ra didn't get intimidated by that. The only Canadian player I watched was Vanessa Webb and she was nice and had good manner. (BTW, where's she? )
** PS: Mi-ra's qualie final score was 1-6,6-4,6-3 over AVANTS, Cory Ann (USA).
Good luck, Mi-ra in doubles with Geznenge tomorrow.

TheBoiledEgg Aug 2nd, 2003, 12:14 PM http://www.courier-journal.com/cjsports/news2003/08/02/spt-2-oth-tenn0802-5366.html
Juanita Ditty sat on the deck at the University of Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center stitching away a needlepoint design of a pink poodle dress. It is her nerve-calming routine whenever she watches her daughter play tennis.
Julie Ditty seemed right at ease, after some initial angst, as she and Lisa McShea breezed past Sarah Stone and Andreea Vanc 6-3, 6-1 yesterday in the Yum! Brands/Pepsi-Cola $50,000 Tennis Challenger.
Ditty and McShea will face No.2-seeded Jennifer Embry and Amanda Augustus in today's doubles semifinals. Their match will follow the 11 a.m. singles semifinal between No.1-seeded Samantha Reeves and Kristina Brandi.
The third-seeded Stone and Vanc battled to a 3-3 tie in the first set before Ditty and McShea took control on three crucial points.
"We kept playing at our same level," McShea said. "They seemed to drop."
Ditty smashed a backhand past Stone, a Vanc return volley sailed into the net and McShea hit a forehand stroke so hard that Vanc could only graze the bottom of the ball.
Ditty and McShea broke serve for the first time in the match, breaking their opponents' spirit and making the needlepointing a lot less tense for Ditty's mom.
"We kind of got on a roll," Ditty said. "We got a little more aggressive at the net and kept balls coming at them."
Ditty — a native of Ashland and three-time Kentucky high school state champion — is on a bit of a roll herself since moving to Lexington, Ky., in June.
She had spent the past year training at Saddlebrook Academy in Tampa, Fla. Although many top players such as Martina Hingis, Monica Seles and Jennifer Capriati have trained at Saddlebrook, it wasn't a good fit for Ditty.
"I felt like I needed a change," she said. "I'm a lot happier in Lexington. I have some friends there, and it's nice to be able to see my family more. The tour can get lonely sometimes."
Ditty lives with her sister, Christy, a student in the University of Kentucky's law school. Julie has begun training with with former UK player Carlos Drada, and her parents approve.
"Carlos has a lot to offer her game," Juanita Ditty said.
"She has a positive support group around her," added Dittty's father, Jack, also a former UK tennis player.
And she has a good lineage. Julie Ditty played two years for Dennis Emery at Lexington Christian Academy. Emery, now the men's tennis coach at UK, recruited and coached Drada, who played for the 2000 NCAA singles title and now is an assistant at UK.
"From the first practice I felt like this was the right coach for me," Ditty said. "I feel like he's already taken my game to the next level."
Drada's influence hasn't totally transformed her game yet, but she is starting to show flashes of his trademark intensity.
"In the past, I've kind of used my talent," she said. "I've relied on my hands, not my footwork. That has a lot to do with becoming more aggressive."
Ditty admitted that aggressive play doesn't come naturally to her, but Drada said she is working hard at improving that.
"We're working on her movement and with the shots she selects," he said. "What she has right now, it can become a lot better. That's the beauty of it."
Reeves — who beat Tara Snyder 6-2, 6-2 — emerged as the only seeded player to reach the singles semifinals. Brandi knocked off No. 4 Jelena Jankovic 6-3, 6-2.
Shenay Perry, who beat Jessica Lehnhoff 6-3, 6-1, awaits the Reeves-Brandi winner in tomorrow's final. Perry's semifinal opponent, Bea Bielik, withdrew because of an injury. Bielik beat Teryn Ashley 6-4, 6-2 yesterday.
In other doubles quarterfinals, top-seeded Reeves and Nana Miyagi lost to Perry and Teryn Ashley 6-4, 3-6, 6-4. No. 2 Amanda Augustus and Jennifer Embry beat Mi-Ra Jeon and Maria Geznenge 6-1, 6-3.

Overcomesdin, deficit to beat top seed

Kristina Brandi keeps beating the odds. Yesterday she beat the distractions, too.
Brandi eliminated No.1 seed Samantha Reeves 7-6 (7-5), 6-2 in the semifinals of the $50,000 Yum! Brands/Pepsi-Cola Tennis Challenger. Brandi, who also has beaten the No.4 and No.7 seeds, will meet Shenay Perry at 10 a.m. today for the championship at the University of Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
Ashland, Ky., native Julie Ditty and partner Lisa McShea advanced to today's doubles final with a 6-2, 6-0 rout of Amanda Augustus and Jennifer Embry. They'll face Perry and Teryn Ashley after the singles championship.
Brandi, of Tampa, Fla., moved on despite falling behind 4-0 in the first set of a match played through the constant din of planes, trains and automobiles. There was the roar of jets descending to land at the airport, the periodic howl of a train whistle and even one motorist who chose to drive past honking the car horn.
"It's actually really good prep for the U.S. Open," said Brandi, in reference to the major played in Queens, N.Y., near LaGuardia International Airport. "It can be quite a circus."
Her performance in the first set was not some sideshow fluke. She maintained her focus and didn't allow herself to fold. After trailing 4-0, she rallied to win the next four games.
"I knew I couldn't get upset," Brandi said. "That would have made things worse. When I got it back to 4-all, I knew I was in the match."
Reeves knew it, too. That might be why she argued the point that tied the set at 4. She claimed Brandi's volley was long, and while returning the stroke, she looked at the side judge as if to say the ball was out. Brandi won the point with a cross-court shot that Reeves couldn't chase down.
Clearly frustrated, Reeves whacked a ball into the fence, then approached the chair umpire and argued her case to no avail.
"By the way," she told the umpire, "that was such a horrible call."
It marked a turning point in the match. Brandi was back on even ground and had the momentum, and Reeves was rattled.
"When I let her catch me, it gave her confidence," Reeves said. "It was frustrating. One or two points and it would have been over."
Reeves recovered to go ahead 6-5 and had the serve, but Brandi forced deuce, then Reeves' serve failed her. She double-faulted the first point, then made an unforced error that allowed Brandi to send the set to a tiebreaker.
"The whole week I haven't been serving well," said Reeves, who had trouble with her first serves throughout the match. "Basically I was trying to kick it in. I could have been more offensive if I was getting them in, and that could have made a difference."
Instead, it was Brandi's relentlessness that made the difference. When she won the tiebreaker 7-5, she in effect had defeated her opponent.
"You have to fight for every point against her," Reeves said. "She just fights for everything. By the time we finished the first set, I was not happy with the thought of going two more sets like that."
Brandi made sure that wouldn't be necessary. With the second set tied at 2, Reeves twisted her ankle and needed a six-minute delay while she had it taped. Brandi showed no sympathy, winning the last four games to claim the match.
The victory was just another steppingstone on her road back. In 2000 she was ranked No.28 in the world, but a wrist injury kept her off the court as she watched her ranking plummet to its current No.131.
"It's the hardest thing I've had to do in my career," she said. "It took me a while to feel comfortable on the court. I feel like I'm playing somewhat back to where I was."
In doubles, Ditty and McShea needed only 44 minutes to eliminate Augustus and Embry.
Augustus and Embry, who have paired up off and on for the past two years, were the tournament's No.2 seeds. Ditty and McShea never had played together and joined up only minutes before the deadline to register, but they've had the look of veterans.
"We complement each other well on the court," Ditty said. "She's an experienced doubles player. She plays well with anyone."

Florida pro falls in both finals

In three grueling sets, Julie Ditty and Lisa McShea never figured out exactly what to expect from their opponents.
But they figured out enough to get by.
Ditty and McShea held off Shenay Perry and Teryn Ashley 7-6 (7-4), 6-7 (6-8), 6-3 in yesterday's Yum! Brands/Pepsi-Cola $50,000 Tennis Challenger doubles final at the University of Louisville's Bass-Rudd Tennis Center.
It was the second three-set match of the day for Perry — and her second runner-up trophy. The Coral Springs, Fla., pro fell to Kristina Brandi of Tampa, Fla., 3-6, 6-4, 6-4 in the singles final.
The doubles title marked an especially sweet homecoming for Ditty. The Ashland native returned to Kentucky in June after living in Tampa, Fla., for a year.
"It's a really great feeling," the Lexington resident said. "It was my first $50,000 (tournament) win. I was very excited to play in Kentucky; some of my friends were able to come out."
The three-time state high school champion and McShea were unseeded, but they overpowered the Nos.2 and 3 seeds in straight sets on their march to the final. Perry and Ashley were no pushovers, however.
"They kept coming up with all sorts of things," said McShea. "It was hard to get into a rhythm."
After winning the first-set tiebreaker, Ditty and McShea took a 5-3 lead in the second set, only to have Perry and Ashley summon a newfound energy.
"They were kind of unpredictable," Ditty said. "Just when you thought they were playing one way, they would go to another level."
Perry and Ashley eventually forced — and won —the tiebreaker. Ditty and McShea admitted they got tight on their first chance to close out the match.
It did not happen a second time. Ditty and McShea jumped to a 3-0 lead in the third set en route to their victory.
"We got back to playing aggressive," Ditty said.
The singles final ultimately came down to a single game. With Perry serving at 3-3 in the third set, the game became one long deuce battle. Six times Perry and Brandi were knotted at deuce before Brandi emerged with the game.
"It was an unbelievably great game," Brandi said. "She was coming up with great shots. It was really crucial. I thought whoever won that game would have momentum."
She was right.
"I couldn't get my first serve in," Perry said of the game. "I played a couple of loose points; that's pretty much what did me in."
Brandi won her last two service games to finish off Perry despite a constant pain in her left leg. After winning the first game in the second set, Brandi called out the trainer.
"It felt like a pinched nerve," she said. "It was so tight. I just needed (the trainer) to loosen it up."
Brandi needed time to loosen up in the match, too. Just as in her semifinal contest — when she trailed 4-0 in the first set — she started with a big deficit. Perry jumped to a 5-1 lead and was making it look easy behind her strong serve.
"I needed some time to figure her game," Brandi said. "It took me some time, but I got used to it."
The match was one of contrasting styles. Perry used a mix of spin, stalking the net, changing speeds on her strokes and ball movement. Brandi relied on precise placement.
"She's difficult to play," Perry said. "She hits the ball really low and really flat. It was kind of hard for me to change the tempo of the match, and that's pretty much my game. If I can't control that, then ..."

brunof Aug 4th, 2003, 04:25 PM Well done by Kristina! Looks like we will have another American re-emerge into the top 100 soon. (Hope I haven't spoken too soon.) She really is very talented and it is great to see her finally find her form after so many injuries and setbacks. Well done by Lisa and Julie too.
BTW, that is a terrible picture of poor Shenay. (She looks older than Martina! :p )
Best of luck to them at the US Open!

I have to say that as bad as it is, that picture of Shenay is pretty accurate. I saw her play last year and that's what she looks like. She at least got rid of her acne. I felt awful for her last year cuz it looked like someone took a grease gun set on autofire and aimed right at her face. Poor girl  Very good week for her though!

That's four challenger titles this year.
Kristina is now at #115 this week. Definitely one of the best comebacks this year.
setpoint Aug 5th, 2003, 03:31 AM What is Shenay's new ranking. That is her 3rd $50,000 final in the last 4 months and she won the other two.
Martian KC Aug 5th, 2003, 03:56 AM Congrats Kristina!:D
