This is played on ASTROTURF?!?! AHAHAHAHAHA!!!! That's... awful. There used to be astroturf courts at my school... it's utter crap to play on, and if you fell over it HURT. Slice works well though ;)

Yeah that's pretty bad by Amanda, but fact is that players often play well above themselves at their 'home' tournament - it's not like Clare Wood ever did very much apart from the old indoor tourny at Brighton.

Go Amanda!

No she isn't ranked 1000. She isn't even ranked at all!!!! She must have some talent though, beating Janes & O'Riain and reaching the final ;) It'll give her a big boost in the rankings, if and when she plays 3 tournaments

Well done Marama sisters. They took over the titles.
By the way, what the hell is "Astroturf"?

bluepastures
Aug 2nd, 2003, 10:16 PM
Both Nugent & Curran are Fed Cup veterans for Ireland too. Not the most difficult team to get selected for admittedly. Through that, they have come up against opposition well above their ranking level, such as Zimbabwe's Cara Black.

I don't think it helps that Ireland have so few ITF ranking tournaments on the tour. Hence the expenses in playing on the tour are that much greater.

TheBoiledEgg
Aug 2nd, 2003, 10:26 PM
Astroturf is what they call artificial grass although its nothing like it.
fall on that and you got burn marks to last some time.

bluepastures
Aug 2nd, 2003, 10:33 PM
Was it astroturf that QPR, Luton & Oldham made their artificial pitches out of, when they had them about 10 years ago?

Is that the same kind of artificial grass they use on hockey and soccer fields? Because if it is, it does hurt a lot, I've fallen on them. Besides, I don't think that's a proper surface for playing tennis...

Well true but both Karen and Claire have been seriously hampered by injury throughout their careers.

Karen was considered Ireland's best prospect. Certainly more talented than Kelly Liggan who made the top 200 recently. Karen got to the quarter finals of Junior Wimbledon in the '90s but a few years back picked up a life threatening virus in Africa which saw her weigh go down to six stone. There was a big piece in the Belfast Telegraph about it.

As for Claire she's always been a good doubles player and she partnered Amy Jensen at the US Open a couple of years back and lost a three setter in the first round against Hingis & Pierce.

paul_masterton
