CoryAnnAvants#1 Jul 23rd, 2003, 12:45 AM Whitney Laiho?! I thought she retired...she played college tennis, a few satellites, got a WC into the US Open doubles with Jessica Lehnoff in 2001 and reached the third round before vanishing into thin air. Good to see her back!
Britanny Brown?! Who the f*ck is she and how did she get a WC?
Best of luck to Surina De Beer, Marilyn Baker and Jackie Trail :bounce:
CoryAnnAvants#1 Jul 23rd, 2003, 12:47 AM Martina Muller is playing World Team Tennis so I don't think she can jump ship to go play a 10K, or any tournament for that matter. She has major points to defend coming up though (3rd round US Open). so she better clean up her act or she'll be in the 400s or 500s

PatM04 Jul 23rd, 2003, 10:14 PM Man....I wish Tiffany and Vika could be on oppositte sides of the draw. I would like to see Tiffany win this though. The next closest person in rank to her is ranked in the 400's and this is a big chance for her to do well. And since Vika already got qualifying points and is getting a wild card into LA qualifying I would like to see Tiffany win this one. But good luck to both:)
¤CharlDa¤ Jul 24th, 2003, 04:24 AM When is that tourney starting? well good luck again Karen!
jayakris Jul 24th, 2003, 07:11 AM Good call, polishprodigy and KV .. Vika did have the goods. The scores I can find so far -
Viktoriya Kutuzova (UKR) d. 1-Tiffany Dabek, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1
4-Takemura d. Whitney Laiho, 6-3, 6-4
Stephanie Hazlett d. Audra Falk 6-1, 6-1
Hazlett/ Julia Scaringe d. Maki Arai and Ryoko Takemura 3-6, 6-1, 6-1
Catrina/ Christian Thompson won their doubles.
This is all from the local newspaper's web page. Nice article on Hazlett (but why can't these newspapers report the scorecard also???) - check out

Lincoln City to Wimbledon?
Former Heritage Hills standout keeps chasing her tennis dreams
By TOM COLLINS Courier & Press staff writer 464-7524 or collins@evansville.net
July 24, 2003
Following three surgeries on her left knee and nearly 18 months of rehabilitation, Stephanie Hazlett is ready to begin her quest toward her ultimate goal in tennis - a spot on Centre Court at Wimbledon.
Hazlett, the former Indiana high school singles champion from Heritage Hills (in 1996) and a freshman member of the University of Florida's national championship team (in 1998), has set her eye on playing in a Grand Slam tournament.
She currently is competing in the $10,000 Fifth Third Classic at the University of Evansville and Tri-State Athletic Club courts. Ranked 731st nationally, Hazlett raced past unranked Audra Falk 6-1, 6-1 on Wednesday. Falk will be a junior at Vanderbilt University.
"I started training full-time in January of this year," said the 24-year-old Hazlett. "I quit working and have focused completely on my tennis since the beginning of the year. I started playing in lots of tournaments in the middle of May. This probably is my sixth or seventh one."
She said the knee has held up. "It feels stronger than it's felt in many years. I'm as healthy as I've been in a long time. It's nice to be in one piece."
Hazlett played two years while attending Heritage Hills. She lost in the state finals as a freshman, was in Europe as a sophomore, won the state singles title as a junior and was in Australia during her senior season.
At Florida, in addition to winning a team title as a freshman, she helped the team to a second-place finish as a sophomore and to third-place finishes as a junior and senior.
Now she is looking to the future.
"I will give myself two or three years competing fulltime professionally," she said. "I always wanted to play in a Grand Slam tournament. I want to get my ranking high enough to qualify and compete against the best players in the world. That's always been a dream of mine. I'm working my way up."
Hazlett made quick work of Falk at the UE courts. She took a 5-0 lead in the first set before Falk won on her serve. The second set was a repeat, with Hazlett racing to a 4-0 edge before Falk could hold serve. The 20-year-old Falk, of Mount Gilead, Ohio, described her play as "not bad, at first."
"I was hitting my shots, but she stepped up and cranked out winners on me. She got on top quickly and was relentless. She is more experienced and could adjust. I didn't have that many opportunities to get in the match."
Hazlett said her game has improved as she has matured.
"I've made a lot of growth as far as in my shot selection and being more consistent," she said. "Sometimes I'm up-and-down on the court. I want to make my opponent hit more balls. I'm feeling very consistent off the ground and my serves have improved.
"Everything is a little better than what it was this time last year."
Hazlett teamed with Julia Scaringe in doubles for a 3-6, 6-1, 6-1 win over Maki Arai and Ryoko Takemura. Hazlett and Scaringe take on Catrina and Christian Thompson in today's feature at about 4:30 p.m.
Hazlett will play in the singles second round this morning at 10:30 against the fourth-seeded Takemura, who beat Whitney Laiho, 6-3, 6-4.
Wednesday's highlight was the upset of No. 1 seed Tiffany Dabek, who lost to 14-year-old Viktoriya Kutuzova of the Ukraine, 4-6, 7-5, 6-1.
Admission to all matches is free.

Just saw the result of the Takemura match...WOW.
Stephanie's ranking is now No. 664. She's defending .75 points, so these wins give her another .75 points. Nice work!
Go Stephanie! :bounce:

Richie77 Jul 25th, 2003, 07:37 PM More on Stephanie:
She qualified for the $25K College Park challenger a couple weeks ago. In qualifying, she beat Tokomo Yonemura, a Top 400 player.
That result moved her from 731 to 664. :)

Gowza Jul 27th, 2003, 10:57 AM that's dissapointing from vika. still a great result but after defeating dabek the #1 seed and looking at the draw from the quarters on i thought vika would take the title pretty comfortabley.
but a semi-final is still great. and now she will get a wta ranking.
