View Full Version : Points question regarding $25K-qualifying

The points table only lists points for 1st round losers (0.25 points), 2nd round losers (0.5 points) and qualifiers (1.5 points), which is OK for those events with only 2 qualifying rounds.

But there are also $25K's with 3 qualifying rounds (draws of 64).
And obviously the first round doesn't count at all towards the rankings, as
- first round losers don't get any points (= event not played)
- second round losers only get 0.25 points (same as losing in the first round in an event with 2 rounds)
- players don't get bonus points for beating a top-500 ranked player in the first round.

Is that right ? Seems to be quite unfair.

Players do get BONUS pts for beating top 500 players in 1st rd qualies in draws of 64.

Players that lose in 1st rd qualies in a 64 qual draw, get 0 pts (if they are under AER, then that tournament is not considered as part of their allocation)

its only in $10k qualies that no bonus pts are no longer awarded. Yes it was a very rare occurance that top 500 players played qualies but it did happen and some did lose.

Are you sure ?

I checked some draws and results:

At $25K-Grado (week of June 9th), Giulia Meruzzi def. Sabrina Eisenberg (ranked 493 on June 9th) and lost in the second round. But she only got 0.25 points in the rankings of June 23rd.
Same for Nicole Clerico who beat Nina Bratchikova (ranked 491 on June 9th).
And at Vaduz (same week), Margit Ruutel reached the 3rd Q-round by beating Beti Sekulovsky in the first round but only got 0.5 points.

Fontanafredda ($25k - Italy - 2.50 points) Jun 29 03
1 Zuzana Kucova(6) - Smirnova-Q 6-2 6-1
Qual 3 Smirnova - Giulia Meruzzi 7-5 6-2
Qual 2 Smirnova - Bianca Kamper 6-3 5-7 6-3
Qual 1 Smirnova - Nicole Remis(4) 7-64 6-3

Irina Smirnova got 2.5pts for here (1.5 qual plus 1 for beating Nicole Remis)

I'm sure i've got it now: rule changes this yr really messed alot about.
If you don't qualify for the maindraw you LOSE the quality point.

This is from the ITF Rulebook

Round points, quality points and credit for a tournament played will only be awarded in
those rounds for which values appear on the point table shown in “4. a)”. Any matches
played in rounds not covered by this points table will not count either as a tournament played
or for round or quality points. If a player in the qualifying of a $25,000, $50,000 or $75,000
event beats a player ranked in the top 500 she will also receive credit for a tournament played
and quality points (applies to the last 3 rounds only).

Might be like that.

Do you have the information about the 2.5 points from the official rankings or from http://home17.inet.tele.dk/wta/ ? Because I found out that the points information on that page isn't reliable (lots of mistakes).

Smirnova got the 2.5 on the official ranks.

quite alot of points on that Danish site were in-correct.
I tried using that when i needed to update my files after Wimbledon (whem some players had 2 or even 3 events added)

Thanks Eggy. :)

But this paragraph is still strange:

"For the purposes of awarding Ranking Points, in all ITF Tournaments with prize money of $25,000 or greater, the round of 32 will be considered to be the FIRST round of Qualifying and all rules will apply as if that were the first round of play. In these ITF Tournaments, the WTA Tour will only award Round Points in Qualifying starting in the round of 32 and play in any round prior to the round of 32 will not be considered as having taken place for ranking purposes."

It hasn't taken place but you still get bonus points ?

Eggy, I found an old ranking (from March 31th) which I have stored on my comp and checked it just out of interest.

I found this:

Castellon ($25,000 - Spain) Mar 23 2003

Qual 1 S Beltrame(4) - A Timotic 6-3 4-6 6-2
Qual 2 S Beltrame(4) - L Pascual Rodriguez 6-1 6-2
Qual 3 S Beltrame(4) - C Maes(10) 7-5 6-1
1 A Dulon-Q - S Beltrame-Q 6-4 2-6 7-6 (3)

Timotic was ranked 368 = 1 point.
Pascual was ranked below 500 = 0 points.
Maes was ranked 268 = 1 point.

+ 1.5 points for qualifying = 3.5 points.

But Beltrame got only 2.5 points in those rankings.

Someone must have made a mistake - you, me or the WTA. ;)

some players just get more pts added than others

WTA completely forgot or for some reason did not count the last $10k in Greece (Orestiada)

Pironkova won that and got nothing for it at all
players who should have gained pts from that event got zilch.

Well that's just :o

Did you tell them about it ?

I told Liz Schroeder about 2 weeks ago when the July 7 ranks came out but no reply back
maybe she's trying to hide it as they are embarrassed.

Erm ... Eggy, you are probably tired of this topic, but one more word on Smirnova:

Yes, she got 2.5 points on July 7th. That gave her a points total of 5.75, with 5 tournaments and no points to drop off the following week.

Now on July 14th, she still has 5 tournaments, no tournaments added, none dropped off, but her points total is suddenly down to 4.75 points. :o
So obviously they corrected a mistake they made the previous week. That would mean that you DON'T get bonus-points for round 1.

And they did the exact same thing to Ekaterina Dzehalevich and Nina Egger - losing one point in the rankings of July 14th. :o

yep ..... i didn't check back

and they have corrected the ranks and they did add the Greek $10k event on

Liz was on holiday for 2 weeks
"While on vacation for 2 weeks there were mistakes. July 7 rankings were wrong due to a missing tournament. July 14 rankings were wrong due to the wrong quality dates. All were fixed."

OK, then case closed. :)

Poor Liz, can't even go on holidays without everything going wrong because of those WTA-:retard:. :o
