A Heady Game For Top Seed
By MIKE BARBER
Daily News-Record
It wasn’t long ago that Martina Muller was ranked No. 51 in the world and had played her way into the U.S. Open’s third round.
It was there, in Flushing, N.Y., among the biggest stars in women’s tennis, that Muller learned a lesson that keeps her going a year later, even after her ranking has dipped to 196.
"I saw that I can play with them," Muller said Wednesday after escaping her first-round match at the Rockingham Heritage Bank/USTA $10,000 Pro Tennis Tournament. "I can beat them."
In 2002, the then 19-year-old German reached the third round of the U.S. Open, losing to Venus Williams. Muller played in all four Grand Slam events in 2002, advancing to the second round of the Australian and French Opens and losing in the first round at Wimbledon.
Her ranking soared to 51 on June 16.
That was then.
Wednesday, Muller wasn’t in Harrisonburg just to flash her bright smile and sign autographs for fans. She was trying to regain the confidence she had found in Flushing.
"When you’re not clear in the head, then you have problems," said Reinhard Muller, Martina’s father and coach. "She has problems in all parts of her game. So we are playing here instead of bigger tournaments."
Muller is using the Harrisonburg event to tune up for next month’s U.S. Open. She has already suffered first-round exits in the French and Australian Opens and did not play Wimbledon.
Muller’s problems showed up early on Wednesday, as 15-year-old Olga Poutchkova took the first set from the top-seeded Muller, 6-2. Muller, who wasn’t shy about showing her frustration throughout the match, rallied back for a 2-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3 win at James Madison’s Hillside Courts.
"It’s really hard if you don’t play like you want to play, like you know you can play," Muller said after her victory. "You need to calm down."
That, she agreed with her father, is not one of her strong points. Muller repeatedly yelled – at herself, she says – in German during the match and frequently swung her racket at the court. After double-faulting in the second set, Muller dropped her racket and covered her face in her hands.
"I’m a person that likes to show emotion," Muller said, smiling.
Muller said she hasn’t played competitive singles in four weeks and hasn’t been able to practice full-speed because of a nagging right quadricep strain.
Poutchkova, meanwhile, started the match with her left quad – a thigh muscle -- heavily bandaged and asked for a trainer before the third set to have her wrap extended to cover her left knee.
Poutchova, who won a similar $10,000 tourney last week in Baltimore, said Muller’s pedigree didn’t intimidate her.
"I don’t really care who ranks at what," the up-and-coming Belarus native said. "She’s a great player, but I don’t really care."
Early on, confidence was on Poutchkova’s side. She broke Muller’s serve in the opening game, thanks in part to a pair of double-faults for Muller, and won several long, baseline rallies.
Reinhard Muller sat courtside, watching his daughter struggle with her composure, the No. 1 thing preventing her from regaining the form she flashed in 2002, he says.
"She wants to play her best tennis, but she can’t play it at this moment," Reinhard Muller said. "So she plays too exactly, too hard."
Reinhard, the coach, said his daughter’s technical skills are still good enough to compete at the highest level. Reinhard, the father, said a combination of injury, illness and boy-trouble in the past year have helped erode Martina’s confidence on the court.
Off it, she sounded poised and ready to take this week’s title and move on to bigger successes.
"I know I can play," Muller said. "You don’t lose your game. It’s there."
Muller will play Kim-anh Nguyen of Orange, Calif., in the second round today.
The tournament concludes with the singles championship match Sunday.

Second Seed Bounced
By ANDY MENDLOWITZ
Daily News-Record
FISHERSVILLE – You think the puddle-ridden tennis courts at James Madison University were slick?
Once the action moved indoors to the Augusta Medical Center’s courts, the play was actually faster.
Japan’s Tomoyo Takagishi used that to her advantage in stunning second-seeded Jackie Trail 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 in the quarterfinals of the Rockingham Heritage Bank/USTA $10,000 Pro Tennis Tournament on Friday.
"I like fast courts," said Takagishi, who spoke limited English.
Players said JMU’s Hillside Courts – which will host today’s semifinals at 11 a.m. – were slower.
"Basically, the balls are just shooting," said fourth-seeded Megha Vakharia, who also won her quarterfinal match. "So you have to be a lot quicker with the swing. You had to adjust."
The decision was made shortly after noon Friday to move the tournament because of early-morning rain that made the courts unplayable.
Takagishi said with a smile she wouldn’t mind if the tournament was permanently moved indoors.
She is the only unseeded semifinalist.
Takagishi entered three tournaments in Korea in June but did not get past the qualifying rounds. She went back to Japan to train for a month, and advanced to the second round of a $10,000 tourney in Evansville, Ind., last week before her breakthrough this week.
Trail is the more experienced competitor. She played in the U.S. Open from 1997-1999 and was ranked 160 in 1999. In 2000, injuries hampered her progress. First she suffered a stress fracture on her right foot, and then a sprained left ankle.
She entered the week ranked 432. Last year, she was ranked in the 200s, but chose to play in fewer tournaments this season to focus on training.
In the semifinals today, Takagishi will play India’s Vakharia, who beat Mayumi Yamamoto, also from Japan, 6-4, 2-6, 6-4, and top-seeded Martina Muller will face third-seeded Shikha Uberoi.
Vakharia, who is ranked 533rd in the world, wasn’t having success on her four-week U.S. tour that included tournaments in College Park, Md., Baltimore and Evansville.
She advanced to the second round once in the three weeks.
"I got my confidence going," Vakharia said. "We were working, working and we said the last week is the main week. You have to perform there."
Friday, perhaps the most compelling match was Uberoi’s 3-hour, 10-minute win over Jamea Jackson. The Floridian pulled out a 6-1, 6-7 (8-6), 7-6 (7-2) win.
Uberoi, ranked 443 in the world, said she didn’t feel good all week. She trailed 3-1 in the third, and took time out to vomit in the trash can on the courtside.
"I gave a lot in the first set and it just drained me a little bit," Uberoi, a Boca Raton, Fla., resident, said. " All of a sudden my energy level started to plummet. I was so out of it. I had difficulty breathing. I couldn’t see straight. I was getting a little nauseous. I think because the lightning inside is a little strange because the outside is bright and then you have the dim lights inside, so it was just on and off. And I was getting so fatigued. I was just feeling terrible.
"Then it just started coming back again mentally. I started fighting out there."
She’ll get a test against Muller. The German beat Ahsha Rolle of Miami Shores, Fla., 6-3, 6-2 in Friday’s other quarterfinal.
The final is scheduled for 11 a.m. Sunday at JMU’s Hillside Courts.
Wow, Martina won easily.

Turn On The Tube
By ANDY MENDLOWITZ
Daily News-Record
What’s a win worth? For Shikha Uberoi: six USTA ranking points, immeasurable confidence and a chance to watch her favorite TV show.
The third-seeded Uberoi beat fourth-seeded Megha Vakharia 6-1, 6-1 Sunday to capture the Rockingham Heritage Bank/USTA $10,000 Pro Tennis Tournament at James Madison’s Hillside Courts.
There were plenty of hugs to go around after the win. First to family members, then to her demanding trainer, Ian Barstow – whom Uberoi had a message for.
"I’m going to watch so much TV now," the Boca Raton, Fla., resident told him. "I can’t even tell you."
Barstow took away Uberoi’s television privileges as part of her training regimen – until she won a tournament. The victory came just in time, with the fall season and new episodes of Uberoi’s favorite show, "Alias," beginning soon.
"It’s not like I was constantly watching TV all day long – TV addict or anything," Uberoi said. "It was just really relaxing to come home [to]. And he took that away from us early this summer and I was so mad."
All week, Uberoi had been the tournament’s drama queen. She pulled out three three-set wins, battled breathing problems and even vomited during a timeout in her quarterfinal win Friday over Jamea Jackson.
Saturday, Uberoi upset top-seeded Martina Muller 6-4, 4-6, 7-5. In the third set, Uberoi’s legs and stomach started cramping. Timeout was called for the trainer to stretch Uberoi out. The pain subsided. Down 4-1, Uberoi rallied for the win.
Sunday, there was little suspense. Uberoi cruised, ripping up India’s Vakharia, who was playing with ligament damage in her right thumb. Vakharia had a taped right hand, which hampered her throughout the match.
The injury occurred in a freakish way. Last week at a tournament in Evansville, Ind., Vakharia’s coach accidentally sat on her hand on a bus.
It was feeling better this week, but Saturday she banged it against the door of the tournament headquarters, causing more pain.
"It always happens when you’re wounded," Vakharia said. "You tend to get hurt over and over again. So I got hit again.
"… Today, I had swelling on my hand. And the pain definitely got more, and I couldn’t hit my backhand as much as I could yesterday and the day before."
Uberoi, a 20-year-old amateur who still hopes to play college tennis, took full advantage en route to her first title in about 15 professional tournaments.
"She was having some trouble with that," Uberoi said. "I think I was frustrating her a little bit too. I understand she was having some difficulties, so it was tough for her."
Vakharia, 19, who is ranked 533rd in the world, didn’t leave totally distraught.
"I couldn’t give my best because of my hand," she said. "But I do wish that I come back and play much better. … It’s given me a lot of confidence, so that’s good. Even with this injury, I could make it to the final."
Uberoi, meanwhile, almost didn’t come to Harrisonburg. Her older sister, Diya, who plays at Vassar College, urged her to miss the tournament. Last week, Uberoi left a practice session because she had trouble breathing due to asthma and had cramps.
"My older sister was very worried about my health," Uberoi said. "She was concerned about my health and my performance, that I would just lose to somebody and not feel good about that. …. I’m a fighter. I [was] going to go. I didn’t listen to my older sister. You know how that is."
Instead, Uberoi, who was born in India but raised in Princeton, N.J., left feeling better about her career. She even reached the doubles semifinals with her younger sister, Neha.
"I think I just realized my confidence actually, now that it’s on paper and now that I have a little star, a trophy to prove it," she said. "I think the confidence was always there but I just needed something concrete. Because you can affirm yourself in the mirror all day long if you want to, but results also help you. I got it now."
Not to mention those TV viewing rights.
NOTE: In Sunday’s doubles final, Muller (Germany) and Surina De Beer (South Africa) beat Ana-Maria Moura (Brazil) and Danielle Wiggins (Florida) 6-2, 7-6 (7-4). … As an amateur, Uberoi did not accept the $1,600 first prize.

Shikha wants to play college tennis at some point and you can't do that if you've registered as a professional. It's "Once a pro, always a pro." If it gets to a point where Shikha can crack the top 300, I'm sure she will become a professional. She's just playing it safe at this point.
OMG @ Vakharia. Her coach sits on her hand and then she slams it into a door. Some luck this girl has!
nkoth Aug 5th, 2003, 06:07 AM Ah, thanks for clearing that up Bradshaw#1!
jayakris Aug 5th, 2003, 06:59 AM Actually, there have been many cases where people got away with having played a lot of pro events and then going to college. The NCAA has lately started paying close atention to this. In some cases, they asked college players to pay back the money they got from pro events earlier and put that into a charity account or something.
