Go, beautiful Dea from Bandung, West Java - Indonesia!!! :wavey:

Dea is now going to university in Washington state...Dea used to be top junior player in Indonesia along with Angie...She won double titles in junior level/ITF with Angie...Too bad, she decided to study in the US...yup, bad for Indonesia in a way since she could have been on the tour with Angie! She is only playing NCAA since she had foot injury and unfortunately, she has closed her mind to play professionally...Oh, well...come back, home...sweetie! Good luck in this tourney! :wavey:

Pac 10 displays strength

Doris Yon
SUN SPORTS WRITER
yond@gvillesun.com

Stanford's Amber Liu claims the NCAA singles title and a Cal's Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones take doubles.

hrough the years, the SEC and Pac-10 have emerged as the dominant conferences in collegiate tennis.

While the Florida women's tennis team did its part representing the SEC by winning the NCAA title last weekend, the Pac 10 showed its strength in the individual tournaments.

Stanford freshman Amber Liu won the NCAA singles title and California's Christina Fusano and Raquel Kops-Jones claimed the doubles title to complete the Pac-10 sweep of the individual tournaments.

Coincidentally, they topped players from the SEC in Saturday's finals at the Ring Tennis Complex.

Liu, the ITA Rookie of the Year, defeated the national senior of the year in Tennessee's Vilmarie Castellvi, the tournament's top seed, 7-6 (5), 6-2.

"I wanted to play aggressive in the match because I didn't want to let her dictate the pace of the match," said Liu, who claimed the 11th NCAA singles title in the past 22 years for the Cardinal. "I came to the net a few times to change it up. ... She is a great competitor and I knew what she could do if she was able to."

Fusano and Kops-Jones took just 58 minutes to defeat Sarah Witten and Amy Trefethen of Kentucky.

"We were really confident heading into the final because we had been playing well throughout the tournament," Fusano said. "I didn't try to think of the score throughout the match. We just wanted to take it one moment at a time and just focus on what we needed to do next."

Winning the NCAA titles gives the three a wild card into the U.S. Open main draws - Liu in singles and Fusano and Kops-Jones will play in doubles.

Liu's collegiate career may be a brief one, as she admitted she has not decided if she will return next season.

"There's so many options," said Liu, who compiled a 33-10 singles record this season. "I'm definitely going to play the lower-level pro tournaments this summer and just see how I do there. I'll make a decision from there."

Playing her 10th singles match in as many days, fatigue may have set in early as Castellvi took a 5-3 lead and was serving for the first set.

But Liu, seeded fifth, broke back in the next game on her third break point and held the following game to get the set back on serve.

In the first-set tiebreaker, Castellvi had a 1-0 lead after winning the point on her serve. But that was the only lead she had in the breaker.

After the first set lasted an hour and nine minutes, Liu needed just 39 minutes in the second to win the match.

"She played a lot better today and I didn't play as well," said Castellvi, who ends her season with a 45-5 singles record. "That didn't match up well."

The Cal duo gave the program its fourth doubles title in the past six years. Fusano and Kops-Jones also rolled through the tournament without dropping a set.

In their title run, they lost just a total of 23 games, five in the final two rounds.

"They definitely outplayed us doubles-wise," Witten said. "They were in the right positions at the right time and kind of took us out of our game."

The match was on ESPN2 today. Amber Liu impressed me, she actually was pretty agressive throughout the whole match and definitely was the one dictating play. She looked like she could transition to the pro tour but this is the first time i've seen her play so I don't know how she plays day in and day out. Pretty impressive to win the NCAA's as a freshman.

I was equally impressed by Amber's agressive play. She has a solid a serve and strokes. She is going to have to get more topspin on her shots, she hits extremely flat.

Amber needs to stay in College...she tried playing the challenger circuit before going to college and she made no impression...these girls need to stop being fooled into thinking that winning NCAA's or USTA hardcourts means that they are ready for the tour...

She could give it another try. I mean it's no harm playing in the summer and then deciding to go back to college. Winning the NCAA's obviously gives you a lot of confidents, so we'll see hot it goes.

It was sad that Megan Bradley (soph transfer from UCLA to Miami, who had a bad shoulder last season) only played dubs. No surprise that Amber won as she was a pro prospect B4 going the college route. I noticed one name missing from the Stanford-laden draw though: Lauren Kalvaria. Did she graduate last year or just get cut or something due to their getting Amber? Lastly, guess who coaches Jackie Carleton from here near Philly (and rest of UCLA team, of course): Stella Sampras, sister of Pistol Pete! How far did she and Dea advance, BTW?

not only Amber.......i think and Cory Ann should
consider going into colleges and some of the
Americans who pretty much have no chance
of becoming another Williams.........

can anyone tell me why Laura wasnt as good
in the juniors.......the way she is playing now,
why would she go thru college playing NCAA...
it just beats me....

Lauren Kalvaria graduated a year ago. I've seen Amber play in person (I got to Cal :D) and she's really not that impressive in person. She doesn't really have any power at all. The thing that she does have going is she is pretty consistent (most college players aren't) and she has nice angles. She wins her matches because of angles. Liu serves a lot outwide, and usually gets the players off the court. But she sucks big time at the net. Raquel Kops-Jones, Cal's No. 1 player really knows how to play against her, bringing Liu into the net and then passing her or making Liu hit a volley. I'm really dissapointed that Amber won, because I don't think she is the best player in the nation.

Congrats to Rocky and Fusy for winning the doubles title :D I see both of them on campus regularly. While it was a suprise to see them win, they really benefited from the defeat of Barnikow/Burdette.
