Thanks for that :) . Would you have the full commitment list too :) ?

I doubt Mi-Ra will there as she has other commitments in Europe.

Thanks. I would like the full list, too :)

Seeing how strong the field at Surbiton tourney is, I think Mi-Ra better play Seoul and pick some easy points, although she loves to play on grass.... What do you think?

If Mi-ra enters the Seoul event, she may get some easy points and can defend her lone and first title as a defending champion. :)
But if she do so, she have to give up the Birminham qualies as well as Surbiton. And the jet lags. :(
Hopefully, she makes good decision as soon as possible.

It's great to see Eun-ha Kim committed here after the long lay-off as a #2 seeded player. Her performance would be doubtful, but still good to know she still wants to grab a racket after tough days.
And good to know Kyung-mi Chang is ready for playing here.

Maybe, So-jung Kim will have a WC as a junior champion,.. so hopefully she can make some noise here.

Good luck to Mi-ok Kim,Jin-young Choi & Kyung-Yee Chae in qualies!

Go, girls~~

A weaker field in Seoul + the idea of playing home may be attractive to Mi-Ra :) .

On another hand, the jet lags (as Eric mentioned) for her coming back from Europe and going back right afterwards may not be a pleasant consideration  .

She would need besides to do some travelling alone as YJ will stay in Europe.

Tough choice, but I would prefer Mi-Ra to try and give her best in the European tourneys :) . She should besides expect some good results on grass :D .

Mi-Ra's better off playing in Europe. There will another $25K in Changwon for her to play in July.

Looks like Chin Bee will play here. :D Hoping for another good tournament.

I think Mi-Ra should play the European tournaments. No harm in her doing that I think.

a 'hacker' is a player who is has very little power and just runs around teh back of teh court making safe shots, waiting for her opponent to make a mistake.

I posted an article on tennis jargon a few days ago in general messages, if you search for it, you'll find a better description there :)

Brief report for Day 1.

KIM JIN-HEE def YONEMURA 2-6, 6-3, 6-3 (score? Held in center court )
: I thought Yonemura would win the match,.. cause Jin-hee had so many chance with her stronger stroke but failed close the point sooo many times. But when I got back to the center court, I was somewhat surprised at her leading in 3rd set. Yonemura got tired with the hot weather in the 3rd set, I think. (Like California sunny day weather)

KHOO CHIN BEE - CHAN CHIN WEI (Q) 5-7, ??
: I don't know who won,... I started watch the match from early 1st set, Chan makes some good and aggressive shots,.. but Chin-bee could mix-up very well,.. so Chin-bee was leading.
I like Chan Chin-wei's smile so wanted her win but,.. she didn't seem to find an answer against Chin-bee's game,.. but Chan finally won the 1st set,.. and start to lead in 2nd set. Unfortunately I couldn't stay there
more,.. cause I've got to get back to my office. :(
During the match Chia-chung came to the court side with being frustrated,.. but Su-wei and a coach of her (or Chan's) didn't give any attention to her. Then she just walk away. Su-wei didn't look that disappointed, and was writing something on a note,.. and asked to the coach how to write a character correctly.
At first I couldn't recognize Su-we cause she changed her style much from last year. I thought she was one of Japanese players,... she had her hair dyed and somewhat typical japanese outlook.
And she doesn't play doubles this time, .. Chan and Chia-jung made a pair.

Hopefully Chan will have good luck here,.. I really like her smile. :) She looks like nice girl.

Due to the limited time,.. I don't know what I'm writing now. :o ;)
I really got to go now,... I'll post again.

Thanks for the results Eric.

Sorry for Akgul but good to see Eun-Ha back :) .

I am not so surprised by Yan-Ze because she is can be a hard hitter and I suppose she committed less UE than Su-Wei. I think that Su-Wei would have had a chance if Yan-Ze had had a low % of first serve.

Good victory for Mi-Ra. I hope it will increase her confidence :) . Sorry for Liza though  .

I also saw some matches..
You're right, Steve.. Yan-Ze is a good hard hitter and she committed less UE than Su-Wei.. In first set, Su-Wei had some great shots and led 5-2, but she lost 5 games in a row.. score was 5-7 4-6..
Akgul was a big server and her stroke was also hard, but she was so slow.. Eun-ha played very smart with some drop shots and deep shots..
And Mi-Ok.. She had many errors in important points.. and decisively she had no weapon to threat Ivanna..

Today's results..
1R.
Mi-Ra Jeon(1) d. Liza Andriyani 6-0 6-4

Some comments regarding players & matches.

JEON MI-RA def ANDRIYANI Liza 6-0,6-4
: This match just showed that how Mi-ra plays. If she is confident and concentrated,.. her game is almost flawless for challenger level,.. and makes pinpoint shots. So the opponents wouldn't have any answer like Liza did. That's what happened until 6-0, 3-0. But if she lost concentration and confidence, she just becomes a normal player with so-so power. Only a person who played many tennis matches would know about her game and how difficult to hit-back her shots when she is on.
Liza played well, and had good BH slice and can mix-up well. If she had met normal hard hitter, she could have played much better.

CHAN CHIN WEI (Q) def KHOO CHIN BEE 7-5,6-2
: I'm just happy to know Chin-wei finally won the match. Even when she was losing in the 1st set, she was hang in there. I like her attitude and she hasn't changed much from last year in appearance.
Good luck Chin-wei and good luck to Chin-bee in doubles.

KIM EUN-HA def AMANMURADOVA AKGUL 6-4,6-1
: I didn't watch this match. But AKGUL is definitely most impressive player in this tournament. Even though I sat next to the player for 15 minutes before her doubles match, I thought she was Ivanna's male hitting partner. :o She is very tall and boyish look (both her body frame and outfit,.. the outfit is definitely for boys, I think. )
When doubles match started, I was surprised at her entering the court with Ivanna.

CHAE KYUNG-YEE(Q) def CHANG KYUNG-MI 6-2,6-2
: Kyung-mi is not fully recovered from her shoulder surgery 4 months ago. I saw some of her practice, but she couldn't make full swing with the shoulder. Anyway, Kyung-hee is a nice girls I think, so hopefully she could seize this chance to go further. Unintentionlly I could hear some words about her private chatt among the players, Sorry about that. ;)

Oh, I need to hurry!

I saw Napaporn's match..
It was the first time that I saw her play. She won against Yoo-Mi pretty easily. Napaporn's stroke was very strong, so Yoo-Mi couldn't do anything. I was little disappointed with Yoo-Mi. When I saw her play when she was in junior, she hit the ball very hard and aggressively. But today her stroke became weaker and she lost somewhat of her power.. Anyway Napaporn seems to be in good condition. Tomorrow it'll be a very interesting game between she and Mi-Ra..
And I saw Ji-Sun and Shizu's match..
Ji-Sun hit the ball not very hard, but she throw top spin ball and hit every ball back. Shizu often commited UE after long rallies. In second set, she often came to the net, but she commited errors with her volley, too..

Today's Results

Actually Robbie(Napaporn) hit the ball flat and hard. Mi-ra is consistent and not making unforced error, she keep the ball in play so well. It's going to be interesting match if Robbie can cut down unforced error. The better girls will win.

Thank you Eric_tennis :worship: for the info.

The reason why I asked you about Napaporn is just because I know that she doesn't have chance to defeat Mi-ra. Napaporn was playing injury (her leg) in pre-qualify matches (Volvo Women's open) on Saturday, 31 May. And she left for Korea after the pre-qualify matches finished. I think she could not move well when she was playing Mi-ra. So the score told everything.

Hope you have chance to watch Suchanan Viratprasert(7) vs CHOI YOUNG-JA match tomorrow. I think Napaporn Tongsalee will be playing double tomorrow as well. Please forward my message to them that "Jiro wish them all the best of luck." Of course they (Suchanan, Napaporn and Wilawan) know me well in person. :hearts:

Sorry about the confusion. :o I corrected score. I-Ting surely won. :D
As an excuse,.. I was really in a hurry, couldn't have luch today. :(

As for I-Ting's match, both hit the ball well, and hard. I think Jin-Hee has better shot, and she could have won the match. But I-Ting is much more mentally tough than Jin-hee. So full credit to I-Ting. She deserves the win. Whenever I-Ting make a good shot, she shouted 'Come ON!',,. and encouraged herself. ( Couldn't hear any support. In Chan-wei's match, there were always coaches and players cheering for her. ;) ) Anyway, I like her attitude very much along with Chan-Wei's.

I'm afraid that I-Ting would challenge for defending Champion, Mi-ra. Young junior who has nothing to loose and nothing to fear are playing very well against Mi-ra due to Mi-ra's game style.
We'll see.

As for Chan-wei,... I think she is the player who most improved from last year. She became much more consistent and persistent player this year. Good luck to Chan-wei, tomorrow~~ :D
Anyway, Su-Wei was there with coach watching Chan-wei's match. I could see her all the time, cause she was walking around a lot.
It's good to see she lookd comfortable and not bothered much by early exit. Looked no pressure on her now.
Last year, his father was always there where she goes,... and her brothers and sister, as well. ;)

Napaporn made really lots of errors... and she couldn't catch Mi-Ra's deep stroke.. Mi-Ra's serve and stroke was stronger than Napaporn.. Yesterday Napaporn played very good (Maybe because Yoo-Mi was much weaker than Napaporn..), but today she seemed to have some serious problems..

Aiko vs Chin-wei was really interesting.. (I saw only final set..) On the final set, Chin-wei led 5-3.. But it soon became 5-6, 15-30.. Aiko had chance to end up the game.. But Aiko made some big errors in that important points..!! maybe she was tense.. She lost her rhythm in the tie-break, so she lost 1-7..

Jin-Young did a good play against Ivanna.. She has good forehand and she can mix up the ball freely.. At first Jin-Young threw a high top-spin ball and when Ivanna's ball is short she ended up with her great forehand.. Many people say she is a moonballer but I think it's not an apt expression.. She uses moonball when it is acceptable to the opponent.. She doesn't always play like that.. and as for Ivanna, she hit the ball very strong and she got many points with her stroke.. But she made many unforced errors.. after the match it seemed that she was very angry with her play today..

Jin-Hee :( She had defeated I-Ting last year in Shanghai 6-0 6-3 so I thought it would be easy game for her.. But she lost..... I-Ting was lefthanded and had good forehand and serve.. But her backhand was much weaker than her forehand.. Jin-Hee knew that, so she hit the ball to I-Ting's backhand.. but it didn't give I-Ting a big hurt.. anyway congrats to I-Ting.. Isn't she the first time to get to QF in challenger? If so, congrats to her once again :)

Some reports of the matches I've seen.

Mi-ra Jeon def I-Ting Wang(q) 6-2, 6-1 :bounce:
: This match is a bit spoiled by the chair umpire. Mi-ra could have won the match, with 6-0, 6-0 but chair umpire made some dubious (I think bad) calls in important points. Maybe he wants sit up there longer. LOL ;)

Mi-ra started serving and led 40-0, then bad call from the umpire,.. Mi-ra lost her cool a bit. Another one in the game,..then Mi-ra got broken.
In the next game, Mi-ra had a break chance, then dubious call from him (who looked like a guy from middle east or Latin europe). Mi-ra lost the game again.
From the 3rd game, Mi-ra just showed some spectacular performance to the spectators,... so the crowd started to cheer and clap. Normally the crowd are very quiet and little reaction, so it was kind of unusual.
And I-Ting's ball has some pace and Mi-ra using it,... so their game looked more spectacular than Mi-ra's normal match. But Mi-ra won 11 games in a row and had a match point. At 6-2, 5-0, match point for Mi-ra, the bad call came again. First I-Ting's ball was long,.. but the chair didn't call, Mi-ra hit the ball back, and it just sits on the line,.. but the umpire called out. Mi-ra didn't say anything but she stared the spot where I-Ting's ball out and pointed the spot with her racket. Then she lost the game. So I couldn't see any bagel today. :(
Then Mi-ra finished the next game comfortably. It was fun game for the spectators.
Most impressive thing was I-Ting's attitude. As soon as Mi-ra's winner hit the court, I-Ting approached to the net, she gave Mi-ra nodding twice politely. It just showed her respect to Mi-ra and I-Ting's nice attitude. :D Hopefully I-Ting learned a lot from this match to advance further rounds in challenger events in the future.

I strongly predict Mi-ra would win this tournament again without much resistence... Maybe final with Jin-Young Choi, I guess.

Go, Mi-ra~

KIM EUN-HA def CHAN CHIN WEI (Q) 6-1, 6-3
: Eun-ha was embarrassing Chi-Wei when I arrive the center court. Chin-Wei was loosing 1-6,0-5. Eun-ha was doing just like she did to Jing-Quian Yi (spell?) in this tournament's final two years ago. She used semi-high ball and control the pace,. and sometimes approach the net to put more pressure to her opponent.
I clapped for Chin-Wei to encourage her,.. then she started playing bravely. She won 3 games in a row. If she started playing like that it could have been more close.
I think Mi-ra and Eun-ha Kim are in another league to 2 Taiwanese young girls. But I-Ting and Chin-Wei showed they have good potential, and hopefully they learned a lot from two senior players. :)
++++++++++++++++++++++++++

CHOI JIN-YOUNG(WC) def Suchanan Viratprasert(7) 6-3,6-4
: Jing-Young Choi is #3 player in Korea,.. and she is almost unbeatable in her homeland. Only Mi-ra beat her in 3 sets in the semi of this tournament last year. I think she would win over Yoon-Jeong Cho even though she is ranked much lower. When she is on, it's very hard to beat her cause she has most variety game in this tournament.
And she gave bitter memories to two players, Mireille & Ivanna. :o She beat them in singles and doubles in a same day respectively. Imagine, to lose to same player in singles and doubles same day!
Isroilova Ivanna came to watch this match with Akgul, and studied seriously how Jin-young plays. Maybe they're playing next week here also?
Anyway, Jin-young aggrevated her shoulder injury at 6-3, 5-2, and match point,.. she couldn't serve hard and full swing from that point. Suchanan was fairly good hitter, so she didn't loose this chance and she started to get some confidence. Before this point, she always looked up her coach whenver she made a mistake. But no look back since then,.. and played very well. So home crowd started cheer for her and support her. She had a game point at 4-5 in 2nd and I thought if she makes 5 all, she has very good chance to win this set, cause Jin-Young was evidently fighting the shoulder pains,.. she used her racket to massage her shoulder and started moonballing to rest her shoulder. But she could managed finished the match with 6-4.
Jin-young Choi had to retire in last weekend's tournament final while she was leading due to the shoulder pain. She said she used acupuncture to lessen the pain.
Anyway, Jin-young's game are very suit semi- hard hitters like Ivanna and some rifle player like Yoon-jeong Cho. So, unless her injury getting worse, she would win easily over XIE YAN-ZE, I guess.
++++++++++++++++++++

XIE YAN-ZE def HISAMATSU 6-4,7-5
: I just saw the last part of the game. Hisamatsu is one of the best shot maker in this event, but Yan-ze just overpowered with her forehand. The match just finished with dubious call,.. and Hisamastu looked embarrassed and disappointed. If it had went to tiebreak, it could have gone either way.
Yan-ze was quiet and working hard. And she definitely looked satisfied by reaching semi in a challenger event. She is coached by Korean former player,.. and he said they were going out for lunch and Yan-ze like Korean noodle much.
+++++++++++++++++++++++

That's all~~
:D

I don't know why you are surprised Yan-Ze beat Shiho  . This was predictable as Yan-Ze had the game to win :D .

But it looked to me that her coaching staffs(including Korean guy) also didn't expect a win in 2 sets. ;)
And Shiho has rifles! Maybe Shiho has some advantage to me, cause she is Mi-ra's doubles partner. ;) :o
Anyway it was good to see them enjoying playing together,... smile together, talk much,.. encourage each other.

That's the problem with these coaches who don't believe in their players' capacities :( . I had forecast the result yesterday ;) .

Yan-Ze reached the final last year at the $25K Tianjin so reaching a $25K Semi-Final is not a first for her :) .

Yan-Ze also reached WTA Shanghai main draw, beating on the way Yuka Yoshida in Q2.

I expect next match to be actually tougher for Yan-Ze because Jin-Young has more game variety than Shiho, though less power (on her forehand).

Best regards to Yan-Ze if you happen to meet her again :wavey: .

C'mon Thai's girls.

Hello, Jirobkk :wavey:
I watched Suchanan's game,.. and she was a fairly good player. But she just met wrong opponent, I mean play style-wise.
After the match, a guy asked her to take a picture of her. She agreed politely,.. I thought she was close at the end of the match so she must have disappointed,.. It's good to know she is a nice girl as well as a decent player. And the guy said "Do you know Jiro?,....", So he gave her your regards. Then I don't want to bother her to deliver your regards again, cause she looked very tired due to hot weather. ( I was wondered that Tailand would be much hotter than here,.. )

And before the match, I thought her not to be a Thai player, by her face, she looks kind of westerner (she's pretty :) ), and always trained with Aussie girls,... and speak English well,... so I thought she would be from somewhere else,... and her coach looked like Indian.
I wish her better luck in next event.

It's no doubt that Thailand is hotter than Korea. But I'm a bit surprised that why Suchanan looked so tried due to hot weather. Isn't it winter in Korea now ?

Suchanan is real Thai and I'm glad to know from you that she is pretty. Anyway once again thank you so much for your kind support. And I hope Korea girls will be doing well and reach the final, especially Mi-ra.

I-Ting is a really nice girl, more mature than other Taiwanese players. :D

Mi-ra won~~ !

This time 6-0,6-1. :( She could have won with double bagel,.. but she maybe didn't want to be said "ruthless" again from her fan.( including V.Melb )

As for Jin-Young Choi vs Xie Yan-Ze match would the saddiest match in this tournament.

When I left the venue, it was 6-3,0-4 for Jin-Young,... but I know it would be 6-3,0-6,0-6 or something like that. :(
From the start it was much more entertaining match than Mi-ra's,.. cause they are hitting harder and going for their shots. Until 4-1, both players played very well,.. very few UEs. Yan-Ze is aggressive player but her power was not enough to hurt Jin-young. And Jin-Young's forehand attack was deadly.
But from the 4-1, Jin-Young started feel her sholder injury pain,... and touched her shoulder between the points. Then she starts hurry to finish the match as soon as possible. She just make risky attack in her 3 shot. Anyway she could manage to finish it 6-3. But her pain was getting bigger and bigger.... so 2nd set just went to 0-4. Yan-ze sensed that she didn't hit any risky shot,.. just put the ball back,... and when she had opening she used forehand attack.
Jin-Young just fighting against pain not her opponent. She just wanted to finish it fast,.. just attack and Yan-Ze's good one hand lobbing saving,. then UEs.
I just left the stadium not to want to see that kind of match. From today, 3 day holiday has started,.. so I don't want to ruin my holiday and Mi-ra's victory by watching the sad match.

Jin-young had to retire from the final while she was leading just 5 days ago. I don't know shy her coach make her play soooo much events while she was fighting against pain. I hope she withdraws from the next two 10K event. It's insane to enter the next week and the next week with the body.

Yan-Ze is also decent player,.. she's normally aggressive,.. but her best quality is her defense. I only saw that kind of running one hand robbing to return opponent's deadly winner from Martina Hingis ( ) But Yan-Ze did that shot so many times and it save her from the defeat.
Maybe she trained a lot with the shot,.. or have excellent ball touch sense,.. it was just amazing.

I'm now going resort area to enjoy my vacation and just hope Jin-Young retire from the match before risking her tennis career.

Only miracle can make her to win the match.

And I think Mi-ra would win this tournament without any problem if she keep playing like that. If she do so,.. she would reach #30 without problems,.... I've always said Mi-ra is much better player than Yoon-jeong Cho,.. and she's around #40s so,... why not for Mi-ra~ :p

Go, Mi-ra~~

Eric and Steve insist that Mi-Ra is the better of the two.
But although i can see Mi-Ra's abundance of talent. Yoon-jeong is has a MUCH less fragile game. Mi-Ra seems prone to losing to consistent players....also she is not half as strong as Yoon-Jeong mentally.
The difference in game styles make Cho a more consistent player with much more consistent results.
Anyways.... Mi-ra should win this challenger....then go and play at a higher level! :)

You are right on these points regarding YJ V. :) .

Besides that, Mi-Ra is hitting the ball far too late (when the ball goes down). It can work in the #150 and + rankings, but beyond, she has to take the ball much earlier.

I think that besides that, Yoon-Jeong is currently faster on court.

I expect actually the final to be a close one if Yan-Ze plays smart ;) .

Hi, I was there for the final, and I thought I'd give a match summary in case anyone was interested.

I had never heard of Xan-Ze, and with Mi-Ra's scores in the earlier rounds, I expected Mi-Ra to win easily. However, after a couple of games, it was pretty clear that it wasn't going to be easy. Xan-Ze and Mi-Ra have relatively similar styles. They're both very consistent baseliners who move opponents around from side to side. The major difference is that Xan-Ze has a lot more firepower, especially from her forehand, which was just huge.

The first set started pretty close, but then Xan-Ze started going for her shots more. With a barrage of forehand winners, she won the first set 6-3. I kept track of clean winners for both players, and the stats were telling: 10 for Xan-Ze, only 2 for Mi-Ra. Xan-Ze did a good job of hustling down some tough balls, but I was frustrated by Mi-Ra's inability to put balls away. Even when she had a clear opening, she would hit the ball at about 80% pace, instead of just going for it. It certainly kept her unforced errors down, but it also allowed Xan-Ze to stay in a lot of points. Mi-Ra especially seemed tentative on her backhand. She hit too many of them down the center of the court, right to Xan-Ze.

Xan-Ze got off to a quick start in the second set, and things looked like it was going to be over pretty quickly. Mi-Ra, perhaps angry at herself, finally turned up her level of power and crushed several forehands impressively. She hit three winners in one game, which was more than how many she hit in the entire first set. The crowd at Olympic Stadium, about 100 people who were solidly behind Mi-Ra, cheered loudly. However, Xan-Ze met fire with fire. She kept ripping forehands, hitting winners all over the place, and it was all over: 6-3, 6-4.

It was only one match, but I was impressed with Xan-Ze. I could see her being in the Top 100 someday with that forehand whip of hers. As for Mi-Ra, she's a very pretty girl for sure, but I don't see enough potential in her game for her to rise a lot higher than she is now. She struggled with her nerves, and her game seemed quite predictable: forehand inside-out, then forehand down the line, then repeat. She hits the ball nicely and cleanly from her forehand, but she doesn't quite have the killer instict on it. And her backhand is almost strictly a defensive shot, and good players are going to just pounce on it.

Overall, I had a great time watching the tennis, and I recommend all of you guys to check out a challenger event when you get a chance. You'd be surprised at how high the level of tennis is.

Is Mi-Ra still hitting balls very late or is she taking them earlier now, specially floating ones (in case Yan-Ze hit any of them during the match) .

Did Yan-Ze go to the net to finish off points or did she stay at the baseline?

How is her second serve now?

It is good anyway to hear that she has become tougher mentally :) .

Hi, Steveg :wavey:
I didn't watch the final cause I was enjoying in resort area with my family. :o ( Sorry, Mi-ra~ )
1. I've watched Yan-Ze's several matches,... she hardly went to the net in the match,.. she finished off the point with her forehand. ( I think she uses her wrist very effectively to change the ball direction,.. so opponents had hard time to read her motion. )
2. Her second serve is her biggest weakness,... too simple serve just like beginners serve form,.. but with that,.. she hardly make DFs and many didn't got attacked in those matches. And other than the 2nd serve, her overall game was solid.
3. In the article, it says Yan-Ze is mentally tough player. So it can be an answer to you.

BTW, in her winner's interview she said she was more happy to win her 1st challenger event in her coach's homeland. And she said she hasn't set a goal as a professional player yet,.. just trying hard is her goal. And she said she could earn great confidence by winning this victory. :D
She deserves this victory. Her opponents en route to final in this event were all quality players, I think.

Her coach said in his interview that he couldn't imagine this victory before coming here. And he said Yan-Ze was lucky to win over Jin-Young Choi in semi. He thought she would lost to Jin-Young.
He also said, Yan-Ze's major problem was not being mentally tough in risky situation,.. but if she keeps her confident she showed in the final against Mi-ra, Yan-Ze will have bright future.
