She would'nt have wait so much time to say that she withdraw, and she was not in the double draw at Sea Island, so I don't know but her first opponent seems to play very well with a 6,0 6,0 in her first qualificating match...

spotsyboy
May 14th, 2003, 03:45 PM
Well, all I know is that Anna plays at 4pm this afternoon, so hold on for that one :)

And for Bradshaw#1, here's a nice article on Allison from the local paper :) Cheers!

When Allison Bradshaw, ranked No. 453 in the world, sent the No. 2 seed packing in the opening round of the Boyd Tinsley $25,000 USTA Women’s Pro Tennis Championships on Tuesday, the upset caused the second-most buzz among the crowd all day.
Naturally, most of the commotion was about top-seeded Anna Kournikova showing up for a practice session prior to her 4 p.m. match today against Bruna Colosio at Boar’s Head Sports Club.
Still, Bradshaw’s three-set dismissal of the tournament’s second-highest ranked player, Bethanie Mattek, caught some by surprise. Not Bradshaw, nor those familiar with her game.

Power game
The 5-foot-11, 22-year-old’s game is generated from her power and when the San Diego native gets it going, it’s an awesome thing to see. Bradshaw, who has seen the loftier heights of the tennis world, is on her way back after struggling with injuries over the past couple of years.
For instance, once ranked as high as 102 in the world, she had to play her way into this 32-woman field by winning two qualifying matches Sunday and Monday in order to stage Tuesday’s biggest upset.
“I was trying to play my game and play aggressively,” said Bradshaw. “My forehand is my weapon. So I have to get my first serves in and move forward.”
She hits it hard and heavy but had enough finesse to have made Mattek do the running. After taking a 4-3 lead in the third set, Bradshaw broke serve and never looked back.
“I’ve known Bethany for a while, I have practiced with her, so I knew this would be a tough match,” Bradshaw said. “Her game is usually serve hard, bang shots down the line. She played a little differently but I don’t know if it was because of the surface [clay] or because she was playing me. I was a little surprised she didn’t come out more aggressively.”
But that was OK as far as Bradshaw was concerned. She is trying to build her game and her confidence back to where it was in 2000, her first year as a pro, right out of her sophomore year at Arizona State.

Family ties
She comes from good stock, this towering Californian with a quick smile. Her mother, Valarie Ziegenfuss, was one of the nine bold players, including Billie Jean King, who broke away from the women’s association in 1970 and joined the rival Virginia Slims series, the predecessor of today’s WTA Tour.
So, it was no surprise that Bradshaw punched the speed dial on her cellular to inform mom back in San Diego.
“She’s my psychiatrist, my mom, my coach, my best friend,” Bradshaw said of her mother. “She’s there for everything. She always has the right answer, so I can’t go wrong.”
While Allison was too young to remember a lot about her mother’s playing career, she does recall watching her play Wimbledon about a dozen years ago. The subject is almost taboo around the dinner table.
“My mother never talks about those days,” said Bradshaw. “That’s all in the past. She doesn’t want me to live my life through her. She just doesn’t talk about it. She wants me to focus on my tennis.”
But even Allison admits she’s curious, particularly when people come up and ask her, “Hey, didn’t your mom do this?”
“I have to tell them, I really couldn’t tell you,” said Bradshaw. “Occasionally I will ask questions about her career or ask to see a photograph or two.”
Still, Val is Allison’s biggest supporter. She coaches her, gives her advice, steers her in the right direction.
It was no big surprise that tennis magnet Donald Dell looked up Bradshaw after the match to offer his congratulations and to pass along best wishes to her parents.
All in all, Tuesday was a big and much-needed boost to Bradshaw’s confidence. She tasted success in 2000 when she won her first tournament after turning pro, an event in Hilton Head. She had a great U.S. Open and enjoyed a meteoric rise in the rankings to 102.
Her best win came in the WTA event in Auckland when she stunned the tournament’s No. 2 seed, Austrian Barbara Schett.
But like many players, she suffered the sophomore slump in 2001 and has struggled with an assortment of injuries ever since, her back, her wrist.
“This was a good win and it gives me more confidence going into the next round,” Bradshaw said. “But this match is over. I have to look to the next one and focus on getting my first serves in. There are no easy matches out here. Everybody is good.”

Today’s singles finals in the Boyd Tinsley $25K USTA Women’s Pro Tennis Championships at Boar’s Head Sports Club will pit one player who has tasted the sport’s good life against a player who wants a nibble.
Third-seeded Australian Christina Wheeler survived her toughest challenge of the week Saturday in a 5-7, 7-5, 6-0 semifinal brawl against seventh-seeded Russian Lioudmila Skavronskaia. Wheeler will meet fourth-seeded Kristina Brandi, who breezed past Petra Rampre, 6-2, 6-2 in the other semifinal.

Wheeler will then team with American Julie Ditty to take on Bethanie Mattek and Lila Osterloh in the doubles championship. Wheeler and Ditty defeated Allison Bradshaw and Varvara Lepchenko, 6-1, 6-3 in Saturday’s semifinals. Americans Mattek and Osterloh ousted Tanner Cochran and Skavronskaia, 6-2, 6-1 in the other doubles semis.

The singles championship begins at 12:30 p.m., followed by the doubles. Admission is free.

“I’m ready to rock,” said Wheeler after the singles victory.

She is certainly on a roll. Rated one of the top five players in Australia, Wheeler has posted a 12-3 singles record in her last four tournaments. This will be her second straight appearance in a final, having advanced to last week’s championship match in the Cloister Cup at Sea Island, Ga.
Brandi is also playing her best tennis of the year. The Tampa, Fla., resident, once ranked No. 28 (!!!!) in the world, having won a WTA Tour event and having played in numerous Grand Slam events, is trying to regain her status and winning today’s title would be a step in that direction.

Having made the semifinals in two tournaments and the quarters, this is Brandi’s first finals of the season.

“I’m excited about it,” said the 26-year-old Floridian. “I’m just going to go for it. Hopefully I can win, but I know I have tough competition.”
That would be the 5-foot-3 Wheeler, who had lost only 13 games in six sets until colliding with 6-foot-2 Skavronskaia in Saturday’s semis. The towering Russian’s booming serves and powerful strokes gave the diminutive Aussie all she could handle.

“Going into the match, my tactic was to try to get [Skavronskaia] moving as much as I could,” said Wheeler. “To her credit, she started playing a lot better and I started to struggle to hit the ball away from her. It was a very tough match.”

Wheeler bolted to a 5-2 lead in the first set before the big Russian stormed back and won five straight games (including two service breaks) and the first set, 7-5. The two were deadlocked 5-5 in the second set before Wheeler finally took control.
She won her serve, then broke Skavronskaia to close out the set, 7-5, then closed out the match with a 6-0 third set. Wheeler swept to a 4-0 lead then shrugged off a rain delay before finishing the job in chilly temperatures.

“I wanted to make her play a lot of balls, especially on her service game,” said Wheeler. “I felt that probably after the first set, she started missing a few first serves, so that gave me a chance to get into the rallies a bit more.”
Even though the second set was fairly even, Wheeler said she felt as if she was always trailing.
“I felt under pressure throughout the whole second set,” she said. “I was trying to get the ball out of the center of the court but she was everywhere and hitting it hard. It was nice in the third set to get those first couple of games and break away from her. I felt, ‘Whew, I’m back on track.’”

Brandi, who boasts a wicked two-handed backhand and is able to get to almost anything on the court, didn’t sweat it as much as Wheeler. She was never in jeopardy after breaking Rampre to gain a 3-2 lead in the first set.
“I’ve played [Rampre] a couple of times and won both, but I knew it would be a tough match,” said Brandi. “She has a lot of tricks up her sleeves with the drop shots and creative volleys, so I knew I had to be out there for a while.”

Brandi and Wheeler have never met in singles play, but have squared off in doubles in recent weeks.
“It should be interesting,” said Wheeler of today’s finals. “She obviously has a very unique game style and I have no idea what it’s like to play her. I think there’s going to be a lot of long rallies, especially if the weather remains this way.”

Kristina does have a unique style, especially on the backhand. I remember Chris Evert commenting about her 2 hander as "unorthodox." It reminds me a little of Kimiko Date's actually. I hope Kristina wins this one. It's amazing that she was as high as #28 once!!! Does anyone else remember the weekly articles she used to write for CNNSports.com (?, or was it ESPN?)? Very insightful and interesting. Good luck today Kristina!!! Should be a good match!!!

Bad luck Christina...another final loss...but a great couple of weeks anyway. She has pretty much defended all her RG points in the last couple weeks so at least she saved her rank!

Congrats Kristina, good to see her back :)...the final was actually moved to an indoor hardcourt cos of the weather :( :(

When Mother Nature threw a curve Sunday to the finalists of the Boyd Tinsley $25,000 USTA Women’s Pro Tennis Championships, it took the participants a while to gather themselves.
Steady rain forced the action indoors at the Boar’s Head Sports Club, which forced the players to make the transition from the slower clay court surface to a much faster, indoor hardcourt.
In the end, Kristina Brandi, a 26-year-old from Tampa, outlasted the dogged determination of 21-year-old Australian Christina Wheeler, 4-6, 6-4, 6-2, for the event’s singles title. The victory was exactly what Brandi needed.
A veteran of nearly 40 Grand Slam matches and once ranked among the world’s top 50 players for a five-year stretch, Brandi is attempting a comeback after suffering a severe wrist injury and other setbacks. Sunday’s championship was a major step.
“This is really good,” Brandi said after escaping her only three-set match of the week. “I think I needed this. I haven’t really had a good win in a while. This is promising for me.”
The daughter of Joe Brandi, a former tour player and former coach of Pete Sampras, Kristina Brandi had hardly broken a sweat until Sunday’s finals. She jumped to a quick 3-0 start against the aggressive Aussie but knew it would not be a cake walk.
“I knew [Wheeler] was a really good player,” Brandi said. “I knew she ran after a lot of balls and I knew she fights and had an all-around game. So, I was expecting a really long match.”
Wheeler lived up to expectations as she rallied from behind and to tie the first set at 4-4, then closed it out with a service break to go up 5-4 and took the set 6-4.
The second set was knotted four times, the last at 4-4 when Wheeler won her serve. But then, Brandi settled into form. She won the next game, then broke Wheeler for a 6-4 victory.
“To Kristina’s credit, she came back, especially toward the end of the second set,” said Wheeler. “From then on, it was just good stuff from her.”
Brandi spent most of the first set trying to get her footing on the court and trying to feel comfortable to the indoor surface.
“I told myself to go for it in the second set because it was faster points, it’s a faster court,” Brandi said. “You really can’t play clay court tennis on a fast court.”
She decided to become more aggressive, to come into the net more and try some different strategies.
The switch in tactics worked as the veteran got on her game, bolting to a 5-1 lead, including two service breaks. Up 5-2, and receiving serve, Brandi quickly put the match away, passing Wheeler down the line on match point.
Getting back into the winner’s circle could do wonders for Brandi, who will return home to Florida to train for eight days before traveling to London for a grass court tournament, a preliminary event to Wimbledon. Because her lone WTA victory came on a grass court surface (The Heiniken Trophy in The Netherlands), she is optimistic about her comeback.
“Today’s win gives me a lot of confidence going into the grass court tournament,” Brandi said. “It had been a while since I had put together a lot of matches. I could win two or three in a row, then lose. This week, I had five solid matches against good competition. This is really positive thing that gives me some momentum.”
Wheeler, finishing as runner-up for the second straight week (she lost in the finals at The Cloister Cup in Sea Island, Ga., last Sunday), is off to Roland Garros, where she stunned Anna Kournikova in the first round of last year’s French Open.
Both drew admiration from USTA officials on hand for the match, noting how difficult it is to adjust from clay court play to the hard surface indoors.
“I was actually surprised how well we both played coming off the clay and straight into the indoors,” said Wheeler. “It took me a couple of games to get into it.”
Brandi also struggled early with the transition.
“It was pretty difficult,” the champion said. “The conditions on the clay court the whole week were very heavy. It was cold out and it was raining, so the balls were heavy the courts were heavy and it was slower. Then you come in here and these courts are pretty quick, the balls are lighter. It’s a tough adjustment but I think we both handled it well.”
For the second week in a row, Wheeler also finished on the runner-up team in the doubles competition. She and teammate Julie Ditty lost in the Tinsley doubles finals, 7-5, 6-1 to the U.S. team of Bethanie Mattek and Lilia Oserloh.
