It's not the end of her career if she loses this match. Agassi lost in the challengers and look where he ended up. If Anna does lose this match or even loses at some time in this tournament, she does deserve props for at least trying to do something to jump start her career. Sometimes a person has to hit rock bottom before he or she can really have great success. Think of her situation that way.

Anna didnt need to play this tournament...there is nothing wrong with her confidence...if she had low confidence she would have been getting thrashed in all of her loses...

The problem with Anna is her pathetic serve...shit if its going to be so awful...go back to the old serve...Some friends of mine said it was worse the Dementieva's serve...They said club players served better than her...she was consistently serving in the 60's and 70's...at Sarasota...

Not really, only in late '98/early '99. But back then her serve was actually decent, she could hit it over 100 with regularity sometimes, her fastest ever being 111 MPH. Now, it's useless, she spins it in at 75 or so every time, which is totally pathetic.

I'd agree with you Go Dominique. I don't even think if she has a few matches in this tournament it'll help her that much. Yes, it's giving her match practice but she'll be more nervous for these types of matches than any other, so in the long run I don't think it's making her anymore comfortable when she's playing matches at regular WTA level again.

From what I've heard about Alves, she is pretty decent on clay since she grew up on the surface in Brazil. I also heard that she has a weak backhand and was never considered a top prospect for the tour.

I think she is very confused and having a hard time adjusting. She is extremely talented, but I think her ultimate goal should be to be a top 15 singles player. Her game was on its way to be good enough to win Slams based on the Tour of 1997; the game's big names were Rubin, Graf, Hingis, Majoli, Huber, Coetzer and Seles. The TOUR has changed.

She should be happy to crack the top 15 and consider herself a superb success.

I just checked Alves' record, and she's doing OK. She has won a $10K this year (a Masters I think) and just had 4 wins in Fed Cup.
All I want to say is that she can obviously play the ball over the net into the opposite field. Assuming that Anna is close to her Widjaja-performance, this could already be enough to beat her. :o

It is truly a blessing for a girl to stay in the top 30 or 40 for any amount of time.

Lots of girls have hit the 30s and could never get out of the 200s after injuries and what not.

Anna has beaten a lot of top ten players including a few greats. It must be so difficult for her to try to think her way back to form.

I think the problem where Alla is concerned is she should have been telling Anna to play some tier 3 or 4 tourneys when she was younger, so she could have won a tournament and so much pressure would have been lifted.

I was never concerned with Anna being able to stay out there 5 hours! This was the match she needed to win. First match are always the toughest to win especially when you have not played for 4 weeks!
