The Guilty May 5th, 2003, 07:36 PM Thank you so much :)
Go Anna :D not a bad draw :)
TheBoiledEgg May 5th, 2003, 07:37 PM thanx Sue

Masha :bounce: :)
Lioudmila :D :)
Christina :)
Sue: is that Lindsay or Erin Burdette ??
Michelle Mitchell i take it ??
and i dont think i know the Parker ?? (pretty sure its got no Spider connections ;) )
The Guilty May 5th, 2003, 07:37 PM Do you know if Anna is playing doubles?
Dava May 5th, 2003, 07:38 PM GO ANNA, lets just hope she does not get Wheeler in the final!!
TatiAnnahølic May 5th, 2003, 07:39 PM Do you know if Anna is playing doubles?
Maybe she will play again with Janet Lee :)
LOL, first time in ages i can say "wow a good draw Anna" ;)
~SunFlower~ May 5th, 2003, 07:40 PM You are welcome, fans. :wavey: The lady I called was so nice.
TBE, It's Lyndsay Burdette... And.... the full name is Sybi Parker from USA.... she has no ranking... and is a wildcard....
BK4ever May 5th, 2003, 07:40 PM Decent draw for Anna...she better get through
TheBoiledEgg May 5th, 2003, 07:42 PM thanx again :)
Anna should play Gaby in rd2
CoryAnnAvants#1 May 5th, 2003, 07:44 PM If Anna doesn't get through to the semis, she might as well call it a day
1st round-Alves-clay court player, but she's not very good.
2nd round-Volekova or Mcshea- Volekova is decent, but she'll never crack the WTA ranks, Mcshea hates clay courts.
Qtrs-barring Sunitha showing up high, this is who Anna should play. Sunitha's talented, but she is more of a hard court player. Besides, if Anna can't even beat top 150 players now, there's a problem.
:bounce: at Cory Ann's draw. She's playing somebody who hasn't played a match in 15 months
BK4ever May 5th, 2003, 07:48 PM Yeah I like Cory Ann's draw...I have been extremely disappointed in results this year...I wonder if she has worked on her serve at all...
Sharapova has a cake walk to the finals...If Anna gets to semis...she wont beat Maria...
What is Amy's deal...is she only going to play WTA events in the US and challengers
GoDominique May 5th, 2003, 07:50 PM I'm really shocked to see Anna here.
I just hope she didn't really claim "injury" as the main reason for not showing up at Berlin. If she explained her situaton to them then it's fine.
TatiAnnahølic May 5th, 2003, 07:52 PM Sharapova has a cake walk to the finals...If Anna gets to semis...she wont beat Maria...
Are u joking? ;) For sure Anna will beat her :bounce:
Dava May 5th, 2003, 07:53 PM When will Anna be playing her first match.
BK4ever May 5th, 2003, 07:57 PM I just called the tournament because even though Anna's name was on the draw I was still skpetical...but Billie said that Anna just arrived and they had just sent a car to pick her up...
Lee-Waters' Boy May 5th, 2003, 07:59 PM I love Billi Lipp :D
aceman May 5th, 2003, 08:11 PM I love Billi Lipp :D
I also love Billie. She's very helpful :hearts:
CoryAnnAvants#1 May 5th, 2003, 08:15 PM I'm not trying to cause speculation about Amy, but I think that this is her last year. A lot of times players that are winding down might just play the Grand Slams or the tournaments on their continent. I have a feeling Amy will play the French Open, Wimbledon (maybe a tune up before), the US hardcourt season, and the US Open and then be done.
Cory Ann has actually done well this year IMO. She couldn't even get past qualifying for challenger events last year and now she is. Her ranking is 260 or so now, so she's only about 40 away from GS qualy cutoffs. She just needs to get a few big wins now.
Ryan May 5th, 2003, 08:23 PM Vamos Anna, Jana, Melanie and Diana! :D
Wimanna May 5th, 2003, 08:31 PM GoGo Anna!!!! :bounce: :bounce:
Ajrob May 5th, 2003, 09:13 PM ¡¡Vamos Anna!! :bounce: :bounce:
Yak May 5th, 2003, 09:14 PM Anna can make it to the final easily with that draw! Maria beating Anna? Not on clay! Maria needs a fast court to beat Anna! And Anna hasn't lost to spunks this year and usually lost in 3 sets while Maria didn't do a whole lot better. The only person I see giving Anna trouble is Nejedly in the semis... Give her Wheeler in the final so she can kick her ass for revenge!
WhatTheDeuce May 5th, 2003, 09:16 PM Anna!!! Win Win!!! Woohhoo!!!
Yak May 5th, 2003, 09:19 PM I just checked the results from Anna and Maria on clay this year at the tour level(because that is what matters).
Maria lost to Matevzic in Charleston in 3(not a good claycourter)
Anna lost to Majoli(former FO Champ) in 3, and to Conchita 6-4, 2-1 ret.(queen of clay)
Maria beating Anna? Not on clay! Not even on anything! Maybe on hard!

Monica_Rules May 5th, 2003, 10:20 PM Go Anna:)
Dava May 5th, 2003, 10:42 PM How do we get the results, I mean if its this difficult to get the draw, how is gonna be to get results???
MLF May 5th, 2003, 10:53 PM Good luck to three players I never thought I'd see back in a 25K about 4 or 5 years ago. Mirjana should have played here too:
Amy Frazier
Anna Kournikova
Kristina Brandi

vogus May 6th, 2003, 06:50 AM The rain is forecast up in Atlanta.
Down in South Georgia we're going to be OK (Sea Island is only 30 mi from the Florida border).
Wojtek May 6th, 2003, 07:18 AM Good luck Anna and Maria
TS May 6th, 2003, 07:50 AM Are challenger events free to enter? I'm pretty sure they are...anyway, with Anna playing here I'm sure they'll get heaps of people in, so my question is...do they have enough space to accommodate everyone? lol
Best of luck to Christina :) Sunitha :) and Maria S :)
TS May 6th, 2003, 07:57 AM Yeah I like Cory Ann's draw...I have been extremely disappointed in results this year...I wonder if she has worked on her serve at all...

What is Amy's deal...is she only going to play WTA events in the US and challengers
Hmmm...I think Anna will be too strong for Masha if they play (I hope otherwise though)...I honestly don't think Anna will be troubled by anyone in her half, but stranger things have happened...
I'd like to know what Amy's story is too. I don't like seeing top 50 players in $25K events, so I'll be cheering for everyone to get her 10 points :p Actually I find it ridiculous that the world no.43 is here, and it surprises me that no-one is mentioning this but focusing on Anna, who is ranked 30 spots below.

TheBoiledEgg May 6th, 2003, 09:22 AM Some of the Players are known to ..... how shall i put this :o
a few top players enter these events solely to give a "boosting hand" to one of the young guns (i.e. deliberately lose so that the opposition gets the bonus pts), but one thing they can never count is who they will draw.
So it rarely plans out that way.
I'm with ya Terry :)
go Varvara !!!!!!!!! get those big 10 bonus pts :D :D
ghosts May 6th, 2003, 10:50 AM ugh... bad for Dimana to draw Bethanie :(
BK4ever May 6th, 2003, 12:58 PM The one person I didnt want Allison to draw and she did  :(
TatiAnnahølic May 6th, 2003, 01:22 PM maria won't beat anna on anything... :o
lol good one ;)
Randy H May 6th, 2003, 01:55 PM no reason why Amy or Anna should be playing at this level - this is worse than Stevenson playing Surbiton last year...
anyway, good luck to both of them, but they really shouldn't be here.
also good luck to:
*Jana Nejedly :D
*Diana Srebrovic :D
*Melanie Marois :D
*Jessica Lehnhoff :D
*Varvara Lepchenko
*Shuai Peng
*Diana Ospina :D
*Christina Wheeler
*Masha Sharapova
*Kristina Brandi :D
*Tracy Almeda-Singian
*Sunitha Rao :D
*Allison Bradshaw :D
*Gabriela Volekova :D
*Lisa McShea
not a particularly good draw for me - tough opener for Jana, as Kristina finally looks to be playing well again - will be interesting to see how far she can extend her 16 match win streak.
terrible draw for Marois, hopefully Peng is really really tired ;)
shame Allison drew Sunitha aswell :(
Russianfan May 6th, 2003, 03:19 PM Go Anna And Masha!

KoOlMaNsTeVeN May 6th, 2003, 05:43 PM :bounce: GO CANADIANS!!!!!! :worship:
and go kournikova and ospina! :)
downtheline May 6th, 2003, 05:49 PM This is really sad. The winner of a 25K receives 25 points without bonus points (about 15 likely for 5 rounds) while a player who gets into the second round (R32) of the Berlin Tier 1 receives 23 points.
Remember when Anna Kournikova was a finalist in Berlin??? :wavey: :wavey: Say good bye to those days! She is number 9 out of all the Russians now!
The competition is going to be tough as the players are going to be unrelenting in their attempts to swipe the 8 points Anna is worth these days. If Anna wins the title, I think it will be amazing and even emotional for her.
Has she ever won a Challenger or Futures?
Tennis124 May 6th, 2003, 05:54 PM ok so lilia and tracy should be done. how'd they do?????
-Calliope- May 6th, 2003, 06:14 PM Go Masha, Anna, Diana O., Cory Ann and Melanie :bounce:
MLF May 6th, 2003, 06:56 PM If Anna wins the title, I think it will be amazing and even emotional for her.
Has she ever won a Challenger or Futures?
She's won two as far as I know, a 75K and a 25K seven years ago.
Terry, I know Amy is too good to be in this draw but she has played less than Anna , 1 match since January believe as she too has been injured which is why she is here. I think it's a toughish tournament for a rusty Amy. plenty of experience and new talent in this draw.
vogus May 6th, 2003, 07:15 PM actually this draw is amazingly weak for a 25K in the US, if you take away the 2 Top 100 players. There is an obvious lack of the solid 100-200 ranked players that you'd usually find in such a tournie.
CoryAnnAvants#1 May 6th, 2003, 07:26 PM The public actually isn't going to be able to attend this tournament due to Anna. The stadium only seats 350, so they can't have the public come due to security reason. Tickets are sold on a first come first serve basis to members of the club, the media for the tournament, and the tournament volunteers.
On a side note, how did Cory Ann do today?
vogus May 6th, 2003, 07:42 PM Skavronska d Serebrovic
Osterloe d Burdette
Wheeler d Cochran
Brandy d Nejedly
Singian d Avants
Can't remember the exact scores but they were all easy straight sets, like 61 62 except for Cochran-Wheeler which was like 75 62.
empiremaker03 May 6th, 2003, 09:07 PM good luck Cory Ann!!!!!!!!!

xcrtbckhnd May 7th, 2003, 01:10 AM Nice to see Kristina playing well and winning again. Jana was one of the tougher opponents in the draw IMO. Keep going Maria! I'd love to see you play Anna!!! I think that match could go either way honestly!!! Probably a lot of mental pressure there that could make the match ugly unfortunately...We'll just need to wait and see I guess!

BK4ever May 7th, 2003, 02:28 AM WTF Cory Ann...how could u lose to a player who hasnt played a F...ing match all F...ing year...
PATHETIC...I'm taking you off my F...ing fave list for at least a F...ing month...I'm pissed  :fiery:
After all that I'm really sad for Cory-Ann  I hope she just had a bad day
CoryAnnAvants#1 May 7th, 2003, 02:35 AM Hey BK, I'm pretty pissed too, but Cory Ann has the same problem that plagues players like Jeyaseelan and Lucic. She hits so flat and hard that there is ZERO margin for error. You can't win consistently as a result. On top of that she needs to learn to serve effectively and not just plop it on the court. I really wish she'd stop that emotional rollercoaster shit she does too. It's fun to watch, but it kills her out there. I'm beginning to think Cory Ann is going to be forever stuck in the 250-300 range.
Props to Tracy though for coming back to old form right out of the gate :)

That is too bad if she plays like that.
Kournikova hits a little too flat on her forehand.
Kimiko Date played pretty flat, but she could make her balls skid and she hit straight through the air which was easy because she was short. She also hit on the rise and brushed up slightly on her backhand.
A player can do well and play pretty flat on the WTA tour. The main difference between a Date or Sugiyama is that they actually had bite on their balls and brushed up just enough to have some spin for safety.
Perhaps technically, Avants doesn't have that safety though I have never see her play.
Commentators used to say Seles hit a flat ball. Though she was no Martinez, Sanchez-v. looper, Seles does have spin on her shots.
You have to have bite and a kick to your groundstrokes to win on the Tour. A flat ball doesn't push the opponents back.
It could be mental and technical for Cory Ann.
Gowza May 7th, 2003, 06:58 AM how tall is cory ann? for players like the williams sisters and davenport they have more margin for error when they hit hard because they are tall whereas the shorter players are htting a flatter ball when hitting hard rather than an angle downwards like the taller players that is why some players have a low margin for error and if they want to be any kind of threat to the top 100 or top 50 they need the power and unfortunately for shoreter players that comes at a greater cost.
but is cory ann short? because if she isn't short then she doesn't have much reason to flatten the ball out because she can just hit it on a downwards angle.

gorecki May 7th, 2003, 02:10 PM Best of Luck Today Anna!
CoryAnnAvants#1 May 7th, 2003, 02:30 PM Cory Ann is about 5'7" or so, so she's a bit taller than average height. Unlike a Seles or Sugiyama, she dosen't have that little bit of spin on her flat shots that keep them from nailing the back fence. When her flat shots are working, they are very effective! When they're not...well yesterday was an example of what happens.
I still say her problem is more mental than anything. Cory Ann is very animated and it's a joy to watch. She's always jumping up and down, slapping her thigh, pumping her fist, screaming "YES!" after every winner, etc. But she can also get so down on herself for no apparent reason. When she played the US Open qualies, she was up 5-2 and when her opponent got it to 5-4, she tossed her racket and looked like she was going to cry. I was just thinking, "wtf, you're up a set and 5-4, get back out there and serve this match out!" She did, but she gives her fans a heart attack sometimes.
A player can hit flat and be successful. Amy Frazier is a perfect example. With what Cory Ann has right now though, I can't see her going higher than 90 or 100. It's a shame too because all she needs is to get an effective serve and learn to come in to net to put away simple volleys (her volleys and doubles skills are SHIT!)
Leena May 7th, 2003, 02:33 PM WTF Cory Ann...how could u lose to a player who hasnt played a F...ing match all F...ing year...
PATHETIC...I'm taking you off my F...ing fave list for at least a F...ing month...I'm pissed  :fiery:
After all that I'm really sad for Cory-Ann  I hope she just had a bad day
And you tease me for getting mad when Lena sucks. :p

Lee-Waters' Boy May 7th, 2003, 05:33 PM Well whenever you call someone from the tournament center answers, not Billie or whatever. In the past they've put me through to Billie but this time she just said Rao won and Ospina won..so i didn't get any scores of the last sets.

nkoth May 8th, 2003, 05:40 AM Sunitha :) Well done. Look forward to seeing how you do against Anna (provided they both get through, which seems likely).
Clearly after Anna's performance today, Sunitha has to believe she has a good shot at an upset... assuming she wins her R2 of course! :)
Here's an article on Anna's match:
Kournikova wins in Cloister Cup
May 8, 2003
SEA ISLAND, Ga. (AP) -- Anna Kournikova began preparations for the French Open and put her injured side to a test in a first-round victory Wednesday in the Cloister Cup.
Kournikova, recovering from a tear in her left abductor muscle April 9 at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston, S.C., beat Maria Fernanda Alves 4-6, 6-4, 3-0. Alves retired after injuring her left thigh in the third set.
"It's not the best match I've played,'' said Kournikova, who needs the work to get set for the French open later this month. "That's why I'm here. I need to play as many matches as I can.''
Kournikova was rusty from the monthlong layoff. She double-faulted seven times and survived a lackluster performance to advance to Thursday's second round, against Gabriela Volekova.
Down 4-1 in the first set, Kournikova battled back to within 5-4, but lost the next game in deuce to drop the first set. Kournikova lost the first two games of the second set, then rallied to tie it at 4-4 before winning the final two games.
She took the first three games of the third set with ease, as Alves tried to play through her injury.
Kournikova argued several line calls. Given a warning for delay of game after going up 5-4 in the second set, she responded by saying, "I'm scared.''
Another time, she rolled her eyes at a call, and several times voiced her displeasure with officials rulings.

Bethanie vs Lioudmila ?
Wheeler vs Ospina ??
BK4ever May 8th, 2003, 08:35 PM Forgive them for bitching and moaning ;) they are not use to what goes on in the Challenger circuit...this is where we toil...we are use to waiting hours after matches are complete to find results :p
Anyway...I have bad news...I wont be able to call after 4pm or 4:30pm as I have to go out...so here are the numbers if anyone can call:
1-914-656-1829
1-914-656-0878
1-912-638-5168(front desk)
Pace yourselves...yesterday they were overwhelmed by us and you dont want them getting mad and stop giving out scores...
The first two #'s belong to Dessie and Billy who sometimes have more updated scores than the front desk...
