Good luck also to:
Ryoko Fuda :)
Mi-Ra Jeon
Samantha Stosur
Yak May 5th, 2003, 03:24 PM Go Vanny! Defend your title! It's on grass so she has a great chance but last week was on grass too and lost in the second round
AUSBOY May 5th, 2003, 03:33 PM Crap Draw!
Wonder where Shelley Stephens is???????? last minute withdrawal?????
Stosur fairs ok
Dittmann gets unlucky, but it really is time for her to pull out a good match. She has the ability to beat Yuka.
Breadmore is unlikely to get far here either.
Hoping for a Stewart/Adamzcak miracle run!
TS May 5th, 2003, 03:42 PM Good luck Sam :D She really should at least make the QF and can even make the final if things go her way. Fingers crossed.
I'll be very surprised if Dittmann beats Yuka, and Lauren has a shot at Barna but she's been beaten badly her last 2 matches and her confidence must be a little shaky...don't think she'll come out of this one.
Go Vanessa in the top half!
danker May 5th, 2003, 03:49 PM Ausboy, Shelley withdrew ages ago.
Yuka's always had an edge over Mireille. I'd be very disappointed if she loses this one.
I especially want Mi-Ra to do well this week. She needs the points badly! :o

danker May 7th, 2003, 12:37 PM You were commenting on Hakura past performances while I am referring to today performances (ranking being a transcrip of match performances) :) .
I mentioned Haruka's past performances (highest ranking of 108) for the purpose of saying that she still has the ability to take a set off a Top 200 player.
Despite being past her prime as a Top 110 player and currently ranked more than 300 places below, Haruka took a set off Tian-Tian because she still has the ability.
Despite being 20 years older and unranked, Martina Navratilova beat 21st ranked Tatiana Panova at Eastbourne last year because she still had the ability.
Therefore, you shouldn't be disappointed with Tian-Tian for losing a set to Haruka, despite Tian-Tian being currently ranked more than 300 places higher and in better form at the moment.

anyway.... I hope Saori can win this..... she's very weak, but she has genuine tennis talent and a gorgeous smile! :) ;)
Miho is a former Top 60 player, so that is why I want to see her achieve her former glory once more.
You must have seen a passive Miho at the Aus Open last year. Not the same agressive Miho that got to the 3rd rd of Roland Garros a few years ago.

NOT TIAN-TIAN SUN AGAIN! Hopefully you can get it together this week because you have a lot of points to defend from here... Hopefully you can get into the main draw of Birmingham, Eastbourne, Wimbledon, cause a lot of damage there and then get yourself into the top 100! I know you are very capable of it! Go VANESSA AND WIN THIS TITLE!

Steveg May 7th, 2003, 10:54 PM I mentioned Haruka's past performances (highest ranking of 108) for the purpose of saying that she still has the ability to take a set off a Top 200 player.
:wavey:
Martina Navratila doubles present performances show that she has the potential to reach good results in singles.
I would not go upto compare Martina with Hakura ;) . And past performances can not be used as an indication of present ones, in particular when there has been such a long time between the points of comparison.
Haruka is 26 years old and her highest ranking was in 1998. She has been constantly going down since then (2000 : 251, 2001 : 254, 2002 : 406).
As for her performances in 2002 and 2003, they are so that Tian-Tian should not have lost this set. Current Hakura performances indicate that she does not have the ablity anymore (could be a physical or a mental problem) to threaten Tian-Tian.
I believe Tian-Tian had a little loss of concentration, or tensed up a bit, as it happens to her sometimes.
And I certainly wish Hakura to come back to her former level :) .

Kimutake, if I understood your post correctly on another website, the surface indoor is the same as outdoor, isn't it?

danker May 8th, 2003, 06:59 AM Martina Navratila doubles present performances show that she has the potential to reach good results in singles.
I would not go upto compare Martina with Hakura ;) . And past performances can not be used as an indication of present ones, in particular when there has been such a long time between the points of comparison.

And I certainly wish Hakura to come back to her former level :) .
I am not comparing Haruka to Martina, just highlighting that on a given day, she's capable of winning a set against a Top 200 player.
Let's not forget either that she won 3 qualifying matches to advance to the maindraw, confirming that she's in form.
Do you want to know why Haruka's rank has been dropping since then? It's not that she doesn't have the ability anymore, but because she's not able to play many tournaments. You would have noticed that most times when she does play, she performs well.
Anyway, Tian-Tian is in the QF now, there is no point in regretting that she had lost a set in the 1st rd.
:wavey:
danker May 8th, 2003, 07:01 AM Mi-Ra lost. :fiery:
Congrats to Maika though, she only just turned pro last month. She's made so much progress since last year in the rankings. :)

It's indoors, but the surface is the same.

Hikaru played not less than 17 tournaments in 2001 and finished the year at #254.
You did draw a comparison with Martina Navratilova (who has shown some ability to do well in doubles). While the overall results of the two players can't be compared.
Hikaru did well reaching the main draw by beating players ranked respectively #391, #458 and #305. As I said, I hope that she will come back to her former self or at least break the top #400 again :) .
On another hand, we can say that Tian-Tian has shown the ability in the past few weeks to beat players close to the top #100 spot ;) (Wynne Prakusya at Fed Cup and Vanessa twice).
:wavey:
danker May 8th, 2003, 07:45 AM OK then, Haruka must have won the 2nd set solely due to Tian-Tian drifting off mentally.
Can anyone confirm this?
Steveg May 8th, 2003, 07:55 AM OK then, Haruka must have won the 2nd set solely due to Tian-Tian drifting off mentally.

I have not seen this match but I can confirm that Tian-Tian lost the second set to Wynne Prakusya in Tokyo (Fed Cup) because she tried to overdo it and slam all the balls :( , including difficult ones. But she's learning :D .
Harju. May 8th, 2003, 07:57 AM Congrats Jarmilla :bounce: :D

So since you didn't see the match, there might be a very slight possiblity that Haruka might have actually won the 2nd set by her own merit? :D
Steveg May 8th, 2003, 08:24 AM So since you didn't see the match, there might be a very slight possiblity that Haruka might have actually won the 2nd set by her own merit? :D
And since you did not see the match either, there may be a possibility at least equal (if not larger based on previous information) that Tian-Tian tried to overdo it, as she often does  :D .
danker May 8th, 2003, 08:30 AM So since you didn't see the match, there might be a very slight possiblity that Haruka might have actually won the 2nd set by her own merit? :D
I certainly don't doubt that Tian-Tian may have done just that, I just think it's an open book case.
Either Tian-Tian could have have overdone it or Haruka could have played her old game. I guess the only people who would know is those who saw the match. :)
Steveg May 8th, 2003, 08:36 AM Third option : Tian-Tian may have heen a little tired mentally :) . I forgot this one.
And I still believe that the probabilities are higher Tian-Tian was down in the second set ;) .
