Steveg Apr 28th, 2003, 02:55 AM I believe that all information regarding doubles draw will be posted in due time here :

Steveg Apr 28th, 2003, 02:59 AM MORIGAMI Akiko(JPN) vs YAN Zi(CHN)
Two double-handed players (forehand and backhand). It should be an interesting match to watch if Zi is not too tense :) .
Yuka YOSHIDA vs. SUN Tian-Tian. I wish I were there to watch this match :) . Yuka is in top form since she has this new coach / body guard.

Thanks for the update :).
Tian-Tian :bounce: :bounce: . I thought it would go in three sets :) .
This is a great victory because Yuka was in top shape in Hochiminh City. I think that her victory against Wynne Prakusya at the Fed Cup has boosted Tian-Tian confidence :D.
Jie  . But at least it does not create any conflict for the R2 match ;) .
Good for Shelley :) .

paul_masterton Apr 29th, 2003, 09:06 PM I just thought this was an interesting pice of news - Helen Crook arrived at the tennis courts just 90mins before her first round qualifying match after complecations with her flights and other stuff. She went on to win the match 6-1 6-2 in under an hour.
No doubt she went to the hotel and slept for 24 hours to try and sort out the jet lag!!
Give 'em hell Hel :D
Steveg Apr 30th, 2003, 08:20 AM I think I just read that Mi-Ra lost 26 26  .
And Q-Jarmila GAJDOSOVA (SVK) d. BARNA Adriana(GER) 63 64
If someone can confirm these scores? I got them from a Japanese website but I am not certain of the translation :o .
Eric_tennis Apr 30th, 2003, 08:37 AM I think I just read that Mi-Ra lost 26 26  .
Oh, NOOOOOO~~~
This is definitely not the news I've been waited for all day.
Anyway,... where did you find the result? I've visited the official site many times including Japanese version,.. but still no updates there. :(
Maybe I can give you some translation if you let me know the link. But my Japanese translation is as bad as my English one. ;)
TS Apr 30th, 2003, 08:53 AM wow...so Casey beat Mi-Ra? I think that's twice this year
Way to go! (if it's correct) :D :D
Steveg Apr 30th, 2003, 08:55 AM Waiting now for Eric's translation...
Eric_tennis Apr 30th, 2003, 09:26 AM Waiting now for Eric's translation...
These are my rough translation. I had some font problem with the site,... so could be wrong for some.
Q-Casey DELLACQUA (AUS) def 6-JEON Mi-Ra(KOR) 6-2,6-2
WC-Kana WATANABE (JPN) vs Q-Tomoko YONEMURA (JPN) 67,06
Kana played hard 1st set,.. then 2nd set went fast.
Nana MIYAGI (JPN) vs Mirielle DITTMANN (AUS) 62,63
Jin-Hee KIM (KOR) vs 4-Vanessa WEBB (CAN) 3-6,3-6 <- Corrected
Jin-Hee hit harder than Vanessa but made more UEs.
Q-Jarmila GAJDOSOVA (SVK) vs BARNA Adriana(GER) 63,64
Regarding YAN Zi vs. Akiko MORIGAMI No mention. Sorry, Steveg.
TS Apr 30th, 2003, 09:31 AM Vanessa?  wtf?
Mirielle :( Another week, another loss.
Great win Casey :) :D
No news on Stosur-Crook I gather?
lin Apr 30th, 2003, 09:45 AM wow Casey :) too bad for Mi-Ra though :(
Jarmila :D
TS Apr 30th, 2003, 09:47 AM Oh good, Vanessa won :o I thought that result was a little, how do I say...strange ;)
Steveg Apr 30th, 2003, 09:48 AM So I was right for Mi-Ra  .
Thanks for the translations Eric :) .
Waiting now for the outcome of the match between Zi and Akiko.
Eric_tennis Apr 30th, 2003, 09:49 AM Sorry for Vanessa & her fans for the conflict. ;) :o
I was just hurried to finish it quickly,.. cause I'm in office and work hour is already over 40 minutes ago,.... and from tomorrow, it's 5 day holiday.
And I confirmed Mi-ra lost,.. so.... anyway,.. I'll be off for the next 5 days... maybe,.. No need to hook-up internet line in a resort without Mi-ra in the draw. :(
I forgot one result from the site.
Shiho HISAMATSU (JPN) vs Rika FUJIWARA (JPN) 62,61
Bye now~~
:wavey:
Steveg Apr 30th, 2003, 09:49 AM Akiko d. Zi 63 63  .
TS Apr 30th, 2003, 09:52 AM thanks Eric :)
omg Rika   what a pathetic score.
Eric_tennis Apr 30th, 2003, 09:55 AM Waiting now for the outcome of the match between Zi and Akiko.
Oh,... you makes me feel guilty. :o
I've waited updated,.. but no new update. :(
I've got to go out in a minute to grab some food before playing tennis. I'll smack every ball to revenge Mi-ra's loss. ;)
Anyway,.. Mi-ra got quite bad luck here. They change the court to indoor... the site said they waited good weather then changed the court to indoor, and started first match around 1:30 PM.
Last year,.. Mi-ra only lost ONE match on grass which is her best surface. She lost 4 times in grass tournaments last year,.. but 3 losses of her happend on indoor court due to the rain. Impressive result on grass.
This time, rain played big role again.!!
Better luck, next week Mi-ra~~~
And good luck to Yan Zi for Steveg's sake! :D
:wavey:
Steveg Apr 30th, 2003, 09:58 AM Enjoy your game Eric, and don't whack the balls too hard ;) . As I posted, bad news for Zi. I thought she really had a chance  .
Eric_tennis Apr 30th, 2003, 09:59 AM Akiko d. Zi 63 63  .
Sorry to hear that..
How did you know that? The bbs hasn't been updated yet regarding Yan's match.
Anyway, I can go out for dinner without feeling guilty now.
Today was not good day with some bad results in tennis for me.
Steveg Apr 30th, 2003, 10:06 AM The BBS has indeed been updated. Don't know why the result is not available at yours  . The person was kind enough to post the result in English for me ;) .
Enjoy your diner :wavey: .

Not surprised by Casey's easy win, she will be top 200 soon for sure.
At least Mireille had the brains to play doubles with Casey! I can see them doing quite well here! They certainly should blow Haruka 'Light as a Feather' Inoue off the court!!!!!
rusty_red_head Apr 30th, 2003, 01:51 PM Well Done Casey and Sam

My apologies Rika :o Good to see she won :)
Casey is rising well, but it gets tougher to move up once you break the top 300. She's certainly doing all the right things though :) She certainly deserves the Wimbledon qualifying WC however, can't see them giving it to anyone else.

Steveg May 1st, 2003, 12:13 PM Li ting is professional double player, she entered the 2r with Na li in us open 2000.she has better volley and service.Ting has a good serve but she is too slow to go to the net. To the extend that she has to hit her first shot after her serve in half-volley most of the time, putting the team in difficult situation.
She had in general good overheads but she tends to tense up in tight situations and you will remember that she missed a key pointat the Oz Open by missing an easy overhead (I think it was an opportunity to equalise to one set all).
Her volleys are not decisive enough and give opportunity to the opponents to keep playing and finding openings (she got lobbed a few times against the Indonesian team). Reason being she is a bit slow to move at the net, though she has a good reach.
Jie is moving faster at the net, though she is smaller. I feel besides that Jie handles tight situations better than Ting. The only drawback for Jie is her second serve. But Ting hit a few double faults when I watched her play doubles against INA. Jie is smaller, but not smaller than Wynne Prakusya who made it in the top 40 in doubles.
I maintain that China should give it a try.

chinadragon May 1st, 2003, 12:55 PM TIAN TIAN failed to the 2r team with jie in two us challege last year .
although ting moves slowly.and yet ,Double match need not very much move.
jie and yan, they move fast, but volley(including service) is not good.Force is weaker than ting.
SO l think powerful attack is the most advantage for ting/tian,and that fast move is the most advantage for jie/yan
Steveg May 1st, 2003, 01:03 PM The problem is that powerful attack failed against the Indonesian pair who showed good hands at the back of the court and the net. A combination of the two would be good.
Besides, Jie is more powerful from the back of the court than Ting (Jie played some fantastic tennis against Ai Sugyiama). She can mix- up the shots better. I think she is besides a better tactician, which is needed at higher level.
Jie backhand is extremely strong while Tian-Tian forehand is very good. They could share well the court with the two of them.
The Chinese should give it more try. There is time before the next team events. In addition, Jie and Tian-Tian singles rankings are closer. They could travel to WTA tournaments together (which their rankings allow), on top of higher Challenger tournaments.
Steveg May 1st, 2003, 01:12 PM I am not certain besides that Ting volley is better than Jie  . She hit some high angled volleys in double that let the Indonesian finish off the points.
danker May 1st, 2003, 01:32 PM Ting is doing it again  . The Chinese officials should consider again teaming up Tian-Tian with Jie :( .
This is exactly what I had suggested earlier this year.
Anyway, it is only practical that Tian-Tian and Jie should pair up seeing that their singles rankings are close, thus playing the same singles tourneys such as the GSs.
danker May 1st, 2003, 01:33 PM Congrats to Shinobu, Rika, Tian-Tian, Saori & Akiko. :D

chinadragon May 1st, 2003, 01:48 PM you might lookup the record last year july,US challege match(25k,50k).tian tian with new partner jie was defeated so easy.
IN Chinese coach's mind,Ting's volley is the best than any others ,for 178cm stature.
BTW LI ting and Li na are from the same city, wuhan.they are the best pair so far in china.
Steveg May 1st, 2003, 01:55 PM I know that Ting is considered in China as the best doubles player :) . But her volley was far from good in Tokyo :( , and Chinese officials could not miss it.
LI Na has always been an outstanding player, both in doubles and singles ;) . She had a good size too (1.73 if I remember correctly).
It takes time to make up a good pair; Jie / Tian-Tian should try it again. Unless there is an incompatibility problem between the two  .
Steveg May 1st, 2003, 02:03 PM In addition, Wynne Prakusya and Ai Sugyiama are excellent doubles players. But they are not very tall ;) .
chinadragon May 1st, 2003, 02:21 PM "Double tall stature" for ting/tian tian,it is a heavy pressure for opponents.a tall and a low ,the rhythm
might inconsistent.
Na li is the best still, powerful service, fierce stroke at the back court, fast move......
It is a pity for her choose.

I'm glad Rika's doing well again. She's way too talented to be ranked where she is at the moment. :)
ex hopman May 2nd, 2003, 07:00 PM I think the surface is called "Omni" court. It's not real grass. It is like a carpet ( looks like fake plastic grass....), but with sand.
It says good for players feet.
Last week I went back to Japan and played on the surface for the first time... It doesn't bound that high, but it's not as slow as clay court.
In Japan, this surface is popular. (You could play with a little rain as well.)
