jayakris Feb 21st, 2003, 01:22 PM Found an article in the Vanguard (Bigeria) newspaper friday edition. But, still no news. Why do they write this kind of article. The author is whining about the tournament and forgets to do her part in publicity with something on how all the great international players are doing there. Oh well.
But it looks like they have hardly finished the second round as of end of thursday.

Poor attendance hits Ogbe Hard Court tennis
By Emma Amaize, Benin City
Friday, February 21, 2003
AMIDST low crowd attendance at the 17th Guinness Ogbe Hard Court International Tennis Championships, Nigeria’s Jonathan Igbinovia and Abdulmumuni Babalola, Wednesday, defeated Romiayi Loglo of Togo and Segodo Amaud of Benin Republic 7-5, 7-6 (5) to cruise into the semi-finals of the men’s doubles. Igbinovia and Babalola are expected to face the winner of the Thursday match between the duo of Nigeria’s Toyin Dairo and Sunday Maku against number two seeded Andrew Anderson and Willem-Petrue Meyer of South Africa. While in the women category, Danbeniya Rebecca of Britain and Snyman Michelle of South Africa have been drawn against the British duo of Homwood Carthy and Youthed Annabel for the semi-finals double today.
At the women singles main draws, Osaro Amadin is drawn against German Franziska Etzel for the quarter-finals ticket. Meanwhile, Orker Secen second round matches are slated for today. Vanguard visits to the venue showed low crowd attendance and disinterest in the persons involved in the championship. Some spectators spoken to attributed the attendance to poor entertainment and side attractions provided by the sponsors, Guinness. According to Miss Uwa Odiase, the promotions done by the the organisers informed us of much fun, but "all we are having is a dry championship. The fun we knew during the 13th National Sports Festival won by Edo State last year is lacking."

What *were* the spectators expecting there? -- An eminem concert to go with the tournament? Elephants walking into the courts with tennis bats? a laser show? It's a tennis satellite, for crying out loud!
Argh, I am starved for news from there and mad. :mad: :mad: :mad:

jayakris Feb 21st, 2003, 01:41 PM OK, some news from India ..
======
Hyderabad, Feb 21 (UNI) Top seed Sania Mirza of India entered the quarter-finals of the first leg of the 10,000 USD Nigerian ITF women's tournament being held in Benin city.
Sania outplayed Magy Aziz of Egypt 6-0, 6-3 in a one-sided contest, according to her sponsors here. However, in the doubles quarter-final, she was forced to give a walk-over to her opponents, as her partner Szussanna Babos of Hungary was indisposed with a throat infection
=======
Go Sania!

Uhh she's playing in Nigeria.
Maybe you meant why isn't she playing in India. Becuase she had played those players before and won and wanted to get experience some other players and also pick up some points before trying for the $25K-$50K qualies.
She basically should move up to about the 400-450 mark after this set and then has very few points dropping off until the end of the year. She then plans to play in some Grade 1 juniors in Asia and then maybe back to the WTA grind.
She is only allowed a limited number of tourneys (WTA/ITF) that she can play in so I think she wants to mix up variety with the option of picking up some easy points along the way.
The Guilty Feb 21st, 2003, 09:48 PM Diana Costa withdrew, she must be injured again :mad: :mad: :fiery: :fiery:
There were a lot of other matches with players retiring.
VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Feb 21st, 2003, 11:25 PM pfff....I hope Amadin won :)
jayakris Feb 22nd, 2003, 02:01 AM About sania playing there,
Another reason was that she got a wildcard to the Doha WTa qualies and had to miss out on the first week of the India satellites last week. Rather than play just one event in India, she decided to play two in a row in Nigeria. I suspect that she won't be playing satellites for a while if she picks up somewhere around 10 points in these two in Nigera.
