Elena, Anne and Jane have winnable matches. Julie might get through hers if she starts to play a bit better. Lyndsay could sneak an upset if she is really on it. As for Karen, well we all know what is gonna happen there i'm afraid.

Pdm1987 Feb 18th, 2003, 10:22 PM How do they do the draws, because they aren't many differnces with last weeks!!!
It would be better is Baltacha & Bacheva swap rankings, becasue Bacheva's quarter is much easier than Bally's. And if Bally wins her first singles match of the year, then she will probably face Sprem, Great!!!!!

Pdm1987 Feb 20th, 2003, 04:36 PM Well Done Anne, a good win regardless of whether Arvidsson retired or not. But for the other Brits, tut tut. Bally's result is dreadful, she will lose 10 points of her ranking next Monday and has not made up for it in this tournament, Julie's was probably expected and Jane lost to a much better opponent, lets hope things go better in the doubles!!!!!
The best part of the draw for the Brits to be in was either the 2nd or 3rd quarter, and only Julie was there, if it was Bally or Jane they would have gotten a lot further.
abs Feb 20th, 2003, 05:02 PM bally played dreadful spraying the ball everywhere
sprem did play well her serve is very strong, and she was into the game clenching a fist when she won a big point . bally look like she was'nt there. she wasn,t pump up at all.
i was at redbridge last year and to me bally hase not really inproved since last year un like anne, i was very impressed with annne her sevre has got stronger and her return of serve was impressive and to the base line .she is a much stronger player than last year even though she swears like a brick layer.
good luck anne !!!

barabanschikova_fan Feb 21st, 2003, 07:36 PM welll Olga this is now the time to jump in big events those 25k are too easy for you. well done.
bluepastures Feb 21st, 2003, 08:21 PM It's great to see Jarmila doing so well in this tournament, on a junior exemption wild-card.
Well done to Elena and Julie for getting through today.
SM Feb 21st, 2003, 08:29 PM Olga knows what she's doing. She showed she can play well at adidas and beat the big names( i saw most matches), but she wants some easy matches and a tournament to get match-fit...
by the end of the year she should be top 50 and playing top tournaments

Leena Feb 22nd, 2003, 06:57 PM Hmmm... Karolina is about to her first 3 challenger events in 2003, like a certain player did in 2000, who also won her 3rd title at Redbridge... it's a good sign. :)
lin Feb 22nd, 2003, 07:05 PM Karolina  :D good luck in the final :)

elenabfan Feb 22nd, 2003, 07:16 PM Close Bally and Julie
bluepastures Feb 22nd, 2003, 07:44 PM The really disappointing thing is that Elena & Julie were leading 5-1 in the second set, before they lost 8 games in succession. A terrific match though.
Sorry, no time to write a report, as I've got more photos to edit from today. These should appear on my gallery this evening.
On another topic, I spoke to Irina Boulykina's coach today. As well as asking him where Irina is playing next, I also asked him about Ekaterina Syssoeva who I haven't seen on the circuit since she was in the US open qualifiers.
I found out, to my surprise, that Syssoeva has now completely given up tennis as she is pregnant!
rated_next Feb 22nd, 2003, 08:03 PM
OMG - Ekaterina
And she was doing so well
rated_next Feb 22nd, 2003, 08:04 PM She'll probably be back, like Rossana and Lindsay, and the other mothers on the tour.
Hurley Feb 22nd, 2003, 09:32 PM Ekaterina  Congrats :D
Karolina!
Pdm1987 Feb 22nd, 2003, 09:33 PM Oh dear, another terrible result for Bally & Julie and losing so close. The result wouldn't be so terrible had they not being winning 5-1 in the 2nd set.
But at least there ranking will move up, a bit.
Pdm1987 Feb 22nd, 2003, 09:36 PM And who will Bally play with next week in Ostrava, seeing as Julie isn't playing, hopefully someone who can play doubles?
bluepastures Feb 23rd, 2003, 12:03 AM Since Jane, Anne, Elena and Hannah are all going to be there, they could make 2 pairs up (if they do all want to enter the doubles).
I've uploaded five photos from today's matches to my WTAworld gallery. They're still "pending approval" at the moment, but should be ready for viewing soon.
King Aaron Feb 23rd, 2003, 01:47 PM Olga :D
Dragana/Katarina :)
Pdm1987 Feb 23rd, 2003, 01:53 PM Well if Dragana Zaric hasn't got a partner then that would be a good paring (from Elena's p.o.v), as would Jane and Bally, lets hope that the Brits can do better there than at Redbridge!
Sandstorm Feb 23rd, 2003, 02:19 PM ---Final---

Pdm1987 Feb 23rd, 2003, 03:47 PM Well Done and congratulations, Karolina. It has been an excellent start to the year, lets hope it will continue. (Just not in Ostrava)
VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Feb 23rd, 2003, 03:48 PM wow.......Sprem has just exploded this year.......where will she be ranked on Monay?
Pdm1987 Feb 23rd, 2003, 03:53 PM Tomorrow she will be ranked about 239
Pdm1987 Feb 23rd, 2003, 03:54 PM and the following week, should be in the top 220.
VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Feb 23rd, 2003, 03:55 PM wow....good for her. she should be able to get in RG and Wimbledon qualifying by then.
Pdm1987 Feb 23rd, 2003, 03:57 PM she will probably be higher because of the quality points she will gain for beating higher ranked players...and being a qualifier from both Southampton and Redbridge.
rated_next Feb 23rd, 2003, 04:06 PM WOW!
impressive week for Karolina once again :)
sartrista7 Feb 23rd, 2003, 04:11 PM Wow Karolina, and WOW Ekaterina!
Palicot Feb 23rd, 2003, 04:16 PM Doubles final
(4) Barabanschikova/Ostrovskaya BLR d. (1) Daskovic/Zaric YUG 6-4, 1-6, 7-5
bluepastures Feb 23rd, 2003, 04:57 PM Sprem's serve was the real difference in the final. She was never broken. She's not a big player, and she doesn't have the most powerful serve. However she does have a very good first serve % and her placement is excellent.
Really pleased to see Olga and Nadejda win a thoroughly entertaining doubles final. Myself and the two friends I was with were definitely supporting them! I've got some more good photos from today, and I'm going to edit them up now to put on my gallery.
rated_next Feb 23rd, 2003, 05:00 PM bluepastures: How are Karolina's groundstrokes?
bluepastures Feb 23rd, 2003, 05:16 PM I have to be honest, there weren't too many long rallies. Hence her groundstrokes weren't tested too much. However they always appeared accurate and pulled Olga from one side of the court to the other.. Her mobility is good too. She's very quick and is happy to move up to the net when required.
bluepastures Feb 23rd, 2003, 07:40 PM I've uploaded three photos from today onto my WTAworld photo gallery.
Steveg Feb 23rd, 2003, 08:11 PM Lars has uploaded around 100 photos taken at Rebridge on his website.
To view them, you can go there (no posting here for copyright reasons ;) ) :
Photos of Redbridge 2003 (http://ifoto0.tripod.com/turn/redbrid3/THUMB1.HTM)
bluepastures Feb 23rd, 2003, 08:17 PM Ah yes, they're by Rowland Goodman, who used to provide them for www.*****************
He has VERY expensive equipment, much better than my digital camera! Still, he could only take them from the balcony. My digital camera is so small I could take it down to the stand, which is one bonus.
They really are superb photos, I suspect they'll be more appearing there in the next few days.

They really are superb photos, I suspect they'll be more appearing there in the next few days. That's correct :) . But still it must have been difficult to take these indoor photos because some of Goodman's are a bit blur.
I suspect it is because he was at the balcony and had therefore even less light. I had the same problem last year to take night photos in the ITF Hochiminh City.
If I attend again this year, I'll stand at players level to have more light :) .
bluepastures Feb 23rd, 2003, 08:34 PM Yes, that's true, indoor photos are a lot more prone to blurring. Outdoors, I don't seem to get blurs even on fast action photos.
However, Redbridge is a lot better for photos than many indoor tournaments because:
a) There's no nets obstructing the view from the upstairs balcony.
and
b) The lighting is much better than at many venues, such as Southampton
