Nejedly wins $10,000 event in Florida

TALLAHASSEE, Fla.(TC) - Top seeded Canadian Jana Nejedly of Naples, Fla., lived up to expectations by capturing the singles title at the first USTA Professional Circuit event of the year. She defeated No. 4 seed Melanie Marois of Ste-Foy, Que., 6-4, 6-0, in the 62-minute all-Canadian final to take home the trophy of the $10,000 USTA Women’s Professional Tournament of Tallahassee. The meeting was the first between the Canadians.
Nejedly dropped only one set on her way to the title, coming from behind to defeat 17-year-old Tory Zawacki of Hilton Head Island, S.C., 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, in the second round. She went on to defeat three seeded players in her three remaining matches – No. 8 Petra Rampre of Slovenia, No. 3 Jane O’Donoghue of Great Britain, and Marois in the final.
In doubles action, Nejedly and American partner Alyssa Cohen advanced to the semifinals where they were stopped 7-6(4), 6-2 by German Antonia Matic and American Arpi Kojian. Top seeds Marois and O’Donoghue were upset 6-2, 7-5 in the second round by Matic and Kojian.
