jomo Feb 6th, 2003, 01:36 PM Ok, heres a quick update on some people.
Maria was not going to play because she was sick and no-one but myself signed in for LL!!! (yes, I can sign in even if I lose 1st rd). This is to take nothing away from Shenay as she played really well. I would have been a really lucky break for me if Maria had not played, but oh well.
Randy, as for the Canadians. Jana is playing very solid, she just hits the ball so solid and doesnt make too many errors. I saw a little of Srebovic and see was playing well, hitting really deep and she had alot of confidence, I am not sure why Sassi retired in the match?
Marie-Eve played amazingly well first set but just couldnt keep it up, which I think is here problem, but she was playing Cargill who nevers gives up and just gets tons of balls back. I did not see Vanessa play but I really dont think her game changes too much at any given time.
I think thats all the Canadians.
Alina played last night against a 14 year old WC whom actaully played a million percent better than anyone thought she would, Alina won 3 and 0 but did not play well.
Tonights match is Ansley and Sarah so that will be a good one.
Bianca played well in the first set and then Svetlana started her usual STUFF which thru Bianca off a little bit in the beginning of the 2nd and I didnt watch anymore.
Ok, I think thats about all for now,
Talk to you guys soon
spiceboy Feb 6th, 2003, 01:59 PM Thanx Jo, very appreciated...sorry to hear about Maria's bad luck...but it's even worse she finally played!!!
lin Feb 6th, 2003, 02:02 PM thanks Jo :) , sorry for your loss but good to hear Shenay playing well.
Randy H Feb 6th, 2003, 02:18 PM thank you very much Jo :D
I hope Jana can get back on track, she has a nice game but I question her willingness sometimes, aswell as her fitness. I think it comes into suspect against players who can move her around well and make her a tad slow in her timing.
Happy to hear Diana is looking confident, she is improving more and more :)
I figured Ansley would be a tough match as she is a tough competitor, but disappointed Marie-Eve couldn't keep up her level as she has beaten Cargill several times before. Hope she will find consistent form :)
King Aaron Feb 6th, 2003, 03:17 PM Thanks Jo :D
I think Ansley has improved quite a bit judging from her results. Hopefully she can oull off te win against Sarah! She needs those points! :D
Lilia :(
sartrista7 Feb 6th, 2003, 05:23 PM thanks Jo :)

Ted of Teds Tennis Feb 6th, 2003, 06:32 PM Jomo:
What exactly is Svetlana's "stuff"? Are you talking about playing moonballs or other such junk, or mental/emotional stuff?
BK4ever Feb 6th, 2003, 07:54 PM Good win for Shenay :D
She has the kind of game that bothers big hitters like Maria. She slices alot and throws in alot of off pace shots. She needs to work on her aggression though. She is way too passive.
seabiscuit Feb 6th, 2003, 07:57 PM Francesca did not seem to play too well:(
VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Feb 6th, 2003, 08:33 PM :bounce: Well done Shenay! :D Sorry it was over a sick Maria :( but a win is a win
and Jo - what luck would it have been for you to be a LL after losing in 1r quallies ;)
paul_masterton Feb 6th, 2003, 08:36 PM LOL Josh that's what I was thinking.
jomo Feb 6th, 2003, 09:03 PM It sure would have been lucky but I have seen it happen before and then the LL win a couple of rounds. Thats one of the things that helped Diaz-Oliva get to top 100!!
Bianca beat Alina today in three sets, Sam Reeves bt Shenay in 3 sets. Tara Synder won in 3 and Jana Nejedly also won again.
Tonight will be a good match and I have to go back to warm Ansley up for the match.
As for Svetlana's STUFF, I was meaning that she tries everything she possibly can to throw off her opponent. She comes to the court at the last minute, keeping her opponent waiting and getting cold and then if she is losing she ALWAYS goes to the bathroom and asks for the trainer and she constantly argues with the refs!! She is really a nice girl but the players get frustrated with her as she just needs to play the game. She is also so fun to watch and she is does funny things!! You just have to see it!!!
Ok, im going back to the courts!! :)
salima Feb 6th, 2003, 09:31 PM it could be that Sveta had got better results if she had consentrated on her OWN play;)
I recongise the type:)

matthias Feb 8th, 2003, 11:42 AM REPORT FROM MIDLAND
Just about everyone at Stadium Court thought Laura Granville was down for the count.
Even Granville herself.
Down a set to Jennifer Hopkins and facing a 5-2 deficit and two match points, Granville – the top seed at the USTA/Dow Corning Women’s Challenger – had good reason to be tense.
Instead, she simply relaxed.
"I kind of thought I was out of it, but I just kept playing the match point by point, and I got back in it," said Granville. "If anything, I think I loosened up a little bit. ... I kind of went for it, and I just started getting more aggressive because I really didn’t have anything to lose."
Maybe not, but she had plenty to win.
And win she did, rallying to beat Hopkins 4-6, 7-6 (4), 6-2 to advance to today’s semifinal round.
Granville, a native and resident of Chicago, will face Atlanta’s Ansley Cargill today at 6 p.m. Cargill also came from behind Friday, defeating fifth-seeded Samantha Reeves 4-6, 6-1, 6-3 in the day’s second quarterfinal.
In today’s other semifinal, Canada’s Jana Nejedly will face Germany’s Bianka Lamade at noon in a match-up of qualifiers.
Nejedly rallied to beat Angelika Bachmann of Germany 6-7 (4), 6-3, 6-0 in Friday’s first quarterfinal. Lamade defeated Houston’s Tara Snyder 6-3, 6-4 in Friday’s featured match.
In the Granville/Hopkins showdown, Hopkins clearly had her opponent on the ropes, breaking Granville to go up 5-2 and serve for the match.
Instead, Granville broke right back.
"Going into that first set game, I was trying to tell myself, ‘I’m not nervous. I’m not nervous,’" said Hopkins, who admitted to feeling tight with the match on the line. "And then I double-faulted and thought, ‘OK, maybe I am nervous.’"
Still ahead 5-3, Hopkins earned two break points to win the match. Again, Granville scrapped to stay alive and eventually tied the set at 6-all. Down 4-2 in the tiebreak, Granville rallied to win the final five points and the set. Four of those five points came on Hopkins’ errors.
In all, Hopkins – the aggressor for most of the match – smacked 38 winners but also racked up a staggering 74 unforced errors.
"I made a lot of errors, and that helped her out a little bit," Hopkins said. "But she definitely picked up her game in the third (set)."
On serve at 2-2 in the third, Granville won the final four games.
"It was a really good match. I was kind of lucky to come back," said Granville. "Jenny was playing great. She was really playing aggressively and putting a lot of pressure on me. A lot of times, I felt like I had to come up with a great shot just to win a point."
It may not get any easier for Granville in today’s semifinal – at least not mentally.
In Cargill, she will be facing a woman whom she has known since age 12, a woman who has served as occasional doubles partner, traveling companion, and all-around friend for several years.
"We’re really good friends, so I think it’s going to be difficult for both of us," Granville said. " ... It’s definitely going to be tough. But it’s just a tennis match, and we’re going to leave it on the court."
Jana Nejedly defeated
Angelika Bachmann
Like Hopkins, Nejedly squandered her share of opportunities in Friday’s first quarterfinal. Unlike Hopkins, though, she overcame those missed chances to advance.
Up 5-4 and serving for the first set, Nejedly was broken by Bachmann. After breaking back to earn another chance to serve out the set, Nejedly was broken again, and the set went to a tiebreak.
Nejedly then lost a 4-1 lead, as Bachmann stormed back to win the final six points in the tiebreak.
"For a while, it was just one of those days where you can’t hold a lead. It happens sometimes," said Nejedly, who is making her eighth appearance in Midland.
"When I was serving at 5-4, I just got so tight and tentative," she added. " ... It makes it tough going into the second set, knowing that you have to fight back."
After winning the second set – a set which saw seven service breaks and only two holds, both by Nejedly – Nejedly dominated the third set.
The key, she noted, was remaining calm after the admittedly disappointing first set.
"Basically, if I don’t (stay calm), it’s going to be a lot tougher," she said. "I just know that anything can happen in a match. In the course of a couple hours, you go back and forth. And if you stay calm and keep playing your game, then it might turn around."
Nejedly banged 29 winners to Bachmann’s nine.
Having climbed as high as No. 64 in the world in 2000 before plummeting to her current rank of 224th, Nejedly said this week’s run has done wonders for her, mentally.
"I’m just starting to get my confidence back after a long time. Last year was very disappointing for me," she said. "I’m finally starting to get in the groove and win some matches.
"I didn’t start (last) year well, and then it was one illness after another," she added. "I kept playing, but I wasn’t 100 percent fit. I didn’t have the strength that I have at the start of this year."
Having also reached the semifinals at Midland in 2000, Nejedly hinted that perhaps this is the year she finally breaks through.
"I always enjoy coming here," she said. " ... Unfortunately, in the past I haven’t done as well as I would’ve liked. This is my year, I think."
Ansley Cargill defeated
Samantha Reeves
In yet another three-set comeback rally, Cargill played a patient, determined match in outlasting Reeves.
In a contest that mirrored the Granville/Hopkins match, Reeves brought some big shots but also plenty of errors to the court, while Cargill simply played steady.
"I thought if I just kept hitting the ball deep, she would eventually make a mistake," Cargill said.
Indeed, Reeves complied time and again, hitting 45 unforced errors to go with 12 double-faults.
Still, for all of Reeves’ inconsistency, Cargill was unable to penetrate her service game early. Cargill misfired on her first seven break chances before finally breaking Reeves to get back on serve at 5-4.
Undaunted, Reeves broke back at 15 to win the first set 6-4.
That temporary setback didn’t seem to bother Cargill much. She answered by winning 12 of the final 16 games of the match.
"In that first set, I had a lot of break opportunities, but she played some great points," Cargill said. "I just thought if I could hang in there and break her once, then that would get her thinking. And I did that in the second set."
Cargill had only 10 winners but earned 20 break chances, converting six. Reeves was 3 of 5 on break points, two of those breaks coming in the first set.
Bianka Lamade
defeated Tara Snyder
In Friday’s fourth and last quarterfinal, Lamade used a big serve to keep Snyder off balance most of the match.
"The best way to win against her is with my serve," said Lamade, who admitted to liking the idea of a quick match to give her legs some rest. "It was my (sixth) match this week, so I’m a little bit tired, and my serve helped me very much."
Like Nejedly, Lamade is attempting to regain her former position among the top players in the world. She was ranked as high as No. 59 in 2001 before injury tripped her up. A broken bone in her left foot suffered last July caused her to drop all the way down to 233.
"When you’re in (the) top 60 and fall down over 200, you have to start again," said the 20-year-old German. "I’m playing good, and I’m happy to get again on the court. I was so long injured, and I’m enjoying (playing) matches."
Friday’s match was less than enjoyable for Snyder, though.
Lamade broke her and then held serve to go up 5-2 quickly. Two games later, Lamade held serve again to win the first set 6-3.
With the second set tied at 4-all, Snyder fought off three break points before Lamade finally earned a break to go up 5-4 and serve for the match. Lamade then held at 30 to win.
Lamade is playing in only her third tournament since returning from the foot injury.
She has never faced Nejedly, her opponent today.
"I think it will be a good match," Lamade said. " ... She’s a good player."

BK4ever Feb 9th, 2003, 02:52 AM Yes...very sad for Ansley...she really needs to do well in the next couple of weeks so that she can get into the maindraw of the slams...her and Laura started on the tour fulltime at the same time and Laura has leaped way ahead of her
CJ07 Feb 9th, 2003, 03:00 AM why is Granville playing Challengers??!?!
CoryAnnAvants#1 Feb 9th, 2003, 03:17 AM Hey BK...I agree it's sad Laura has risen in the ranks so much more than Ansley, but it's also not surprising. You need to have weapons to break into the top 50 and 75. Laura has a solid, powerful baseline game and good volleys when she decides to come in. Ansley is consistent and knocks every ball back, but not much else. This works on the challenger level and in WTA qualifying, but you need to do more than knock everything down the middle of the court to really break into the tour. Frankly, I'm impressed she has done as well as she has now.
Hurley Feb 9th, 2003, 04:50 AM Great job Bianka :bounce: :D :bounce:

good luck in the final Laura :) (though I agree, I think she should really be playing regularly on the tour by now...)
lin Feb 9th, 2003, 11:30 AM good luck Laura in the final :)
Ansley  :(
SM Feb 9th, 2003, 01:27 PM Whats wrong with Laura playing a 75k? there isnt much difference points-wise with this from a WTA tier5 anyway...
I think its a good idea for Laura to play a few challengers and get alot of solid results in them = more confidenceand match fitness translating to more success on the main tour.
King Aaron Feb 9th, 2003, 03:38 PM Ansley  :( Great week though. I think she can be a top 75 player. She needs to attack more and play the ball left and right not only the center. She's got a wicked forehand.
BK4ever Feb 9th, 2003, 04:05 PM I think Laura was down about her performance in Australia Open and just wanted to get some match play before getting back on the main tour. Also there are some nice points to be had at a $75k...she needs to get a lil higher in the rankings so she doesnt have to play qualies in the tier II's.
Hopefully this new coaching structure at the USTA will help Ansley. She has been stuck in a rut for quite a while in terms of her development. She needs to work on her backhand, her serve and her strategy.
BK4ever Feb 9th, 2003, 04:56 PM Damn, Laura and Ansley was putting it all on the line  for Ansley
$75,000 Dow Corning USTA Championships
Indoor-Hardcourt
Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center
February 4-9, 2003
Midland, Mich. - One was expected to be in the final. The other was not even in the original draw.
No. 1 seed Laura Granville of Chicago and German qualifier Bianka Lamade will meet in the title match of the 15th Annual Dow Corning USTA Women’s Championships at the Midland (Mich.) Community Tennis Center Sunday at 1 p.m. The doubles final will follow.
Granville held off friend and longtime rival Ansley Cargill of Atlanta, 6-1, 7-6 (5), in a highly emotional match. Lamade won her eighth match in as many days by defeating fellow qualifier Jana Nejedly of Canada, 6-3, 3-6, 6-0. She began her run to the final last Sunday by winning the first of her three qualifying round matches.
This was the third meeting between Cargill and Granville in a pro tournament, with each player posting a win. The two players have had numerous battles in the college and juniors ranks and even lived in the same house for a year while training at the USA High Performance Training Center in Key Biscayne, Fla., and attending the same high school.
The match was no friendly affair, however.
Granville was cited with a code violation for unsportsmanlike conduct when a ball hit in frustration after a point hit the back of an official’s leg. Cargill burst into tears during the second set tiebreak when a third disputed line call in the final two games went against her. The lost point made the score 5-2 and brought Cargill to tears as she pleaded to the chair umpire, “it’s so unfair.” The same linesman made the decisive line call in Cargill’s favor on the next point, sparking a supportive roar from the partisan crowd.
With the tiebreaker leveled at 5-all, Granville won the final two points in a fashion indicative of the match. She put away a high volley for a 6-5 lead after Cargill scampered corner to corner to retrieve three put-away attempts and throw up lobs. The final point ended on the 12th stroke of the rally when Cargill dumped a forehand into the net and sealed her fate. Several rallies lasted more than a dozen strokes before coming to a conclusion.
“I was more emotional and more nervous today than I would have been if I played someone who I didn’t know,” said Granville ranked No. 47 in the world. “Ansley and I have shared so much in the past few years. They say to just play the ball, but it is almost impossible to do when you look across the net.”
The first semifinal hinged on two long games that Lamade won and deflated Nejedly. The seventh game of the first set went to 10 deuces before Lamade held for a 4-3 lead. Unable to convert on three break points in the game earlier, Nejedly was then broken for the first time in the match and would yield the set in the next game.
In the second set, Nejedly converted the only service break she could muster for a 5-3 lead. Lamade saved a break point in that game with one of her 10 aces, but eventually gave it away with one of her three double faults. Nejedly evened the match at one set apiece in the next game. She held off four game points against her in the first game of the final set, but on the tenth point Lamade took the game and the wind out of Nejedly’s sail.
Still, Nejedly will look back on her week in Midland with pride. “Any time you can win six singles matches in a week, you have to be pleased,” she said having reached the semifinals here for the second time in eight attempts. “It doesn’t happen too often.”
In the doubles semifinals, a pair of Florida teenagers upset No. 3 seeds Jennifer Embry and Amy Frazier in three sets, 6-1, 1-6, 6-4. Bethanie Mattek and Shenay Perry converted on their fourth match point opportunity when Embry netted a forehand service return. Mattek and Perry advanced through qualifying and have won 13 straight matches on the USTA Pro Circuit in the last three weeks.
No. 1 seeds Teryn Ashley of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Abigail Spears of Valley Center, Calif., ended Granville’s bid to become just the second player to sweep the Dow Corning USTA singles and doubles. Chanda Rubin accomplished the feat in 1995, defeating Brenda Shultz-McCarthy for the singles title then teaming will Schultz-McCarthy to win the doubles crown. Ashley and Spears, who won their first tour level double last month, turned back Granville and Sarah Taylor of Bradenton, Fla., 6-1, 6-4.

kournikovafan13 Feb 9th, 2003, 06:12 PM omg poor Ansley
I agree with Aaron though, I think in the past few months Ansley has tried to be more aggressive, especially with her forehand. Look at her stats from her matches in Melbourne, or read SM's comments about Ansley when he saw her in Sydney. He said she has a "huge" forehand.
So maybe she can move into the top 75 :)

VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Feb 9th, 2003, 08:27 PM Laura is such a sour puss. I don't see how anyone can maintain such a painful looking face for so long.

Midland, Mich. - German Bianka Lamade won her eighth match in as many days at the 15th Annual Dow Corning USTA Challenger overpowering and outlasting No. 1 seed Laura Granville of Chicago in the final, 6-3, 1-6, 6-4, to capture her first USTA Pro Circuit title.
Lamade, ranked No. 233 in the world, started the event last Sunday in the qualifying rounds just hoping to earn a berth in the main draw. Her upset of No. 47 Granville capped a remarkable comeback after a six-month hiatus since breaking her foot in July.
“It was an amazing feeling to win here,” said Lamade, who was ranked as high as No. 57 in the world after winning her only tour-level title in 2001 at Tashkent. “This means more to me than (Tashkent) since I had missed playing for so long. I was not always smiles before the injury, but I’ve had fun this week and really enjoy playing again.”
In doubles, No. 1 seeds Teryn Ashley of Chestnut Hill, Mass., and Abigail Spears of Valley Center, Calif., ended the 13-match winning streak of Florida teenagers Bethanie Mattek and Shenay Perry, 6-1, 4-6, 6-4. Ashley, a Stanford University graduate, and Spears, who turned professional after her freshman year at UCLA, won their first tour title last month in Auckland.
