Challenger tennis
First semifinal features offensive-minded players
BILL WOLVERTON , Rockford Register Star
ROCKFORD -- Today's first singles semifinal at the USTA Challenger of Rockford will feature two of the more aggressive players in the tournament.
"We'll probably both be at the net quite a bit," said No. 3 seed Vanessa Webb, who beat No. 8 seed Evelyn Fauth 6-3, 6-2 on Friday to advance to today's 11 a.m. match against Petra Rampre.
"It'll be different."
The other singles semifinal is between No. 4 seed Bahia Mouhtassine, a 7-6 (7-2), 6-2 winner over Seda Noorlander, and Michaela Pastikova, who beat No. 2 seed Maria Elena Camerin 6-3, 6-3.
Rampre advanced with a 7-5, 6-4 win over Lilia Osterloh.
The 23-year-old from Slovenia is the only qualifier remaining in the tournament. She came to Rockford ranked 448th in the world, 32 ranking spots from not even being here.
"I feel good because I've been training really hard and can see it on the court," Rampre said. "This week, everything is coming together."
Ranked as high as 162 at the end of October in 2000, she started working with Ashley Hobson at PBI Tennis Academy in Atlanta after her ranking plummeted.
"I've been really focused on the court," Rampre said. "In the past, if I played a top seed, I might go three sets but would lose. Now, I have more confidence."
Rampre has played Webb twice in her career -- both losses.
"It's always a good match," she said. "We play a lot a like. We're both very aggressive. So it should be interesting."
