View Full Version : OK My day at Hull/ I went again :)

TheBoiledEgg
Jan 22nd, 2003, 08:03 PM
got there around 10-40 and watched some of the mens SF from AUS OPEN on the TV, most of the players were watching that too.

I'm back from HULL :)
pretty good day too

didn't stay around for all of last 2 matches as i had to leave.

Renata Kucerkova d. Georgia Stoop 2-6 6-3 6-0
I was impressed with Georgia Stoop especially in set 1, she's got a ripper of a FH, and a pretty good BH DTL.
After she got down in 2nd set, she started to get give out negative body signals to her opponent and lost it completely.
Still she looked VERY good when things were going her way.
Renata Kucerkova picked up her game as well.

Amanda Janes d. Elisa Balsamo 6-2 6-2
Amanda was way too strong for Elisa slicing and dicing her, coming in all the time. Amanda's serve was very effective and Elisa couldnt handle her lefty swingers.
Still Elisa didn't seem too worried afterwards. She's a bundle of fun.

Aleksandra Srndovic d. Yyonne Doyle 7-5 rtd
didnt see Doyle's match, but she was 5-2 up.

Hanna Nooni d. Lyndsey Reilly 3-6 6-4 6-1
This went on for 2 hours just for 1st two sets and a bit.

Hanna was throwing her racquet about, questioning calls,
one bad call, she clobbered the ball against the roof ;)
Hanna was 0-5 down in 1st, came back a little and lost that.
2nd set games were with serve until Reilly DF's at set pt down
but the big game was at 1-2 with Reilly serving, that game went on for 20 mins approx
Galina Voskoboeva's match started about then and she was 5-2 up and they were still at 1-2.
that game broke Reilly's spirit.

The mens match on the box went on for hours and still 3 hours later there were still lots of players, their parents, coaches watching too. ( last i saw of it was when it was 18-17)

Liana Balaci d. Nicole Rencken 6-3 6-3
This was best match of day
Liana was very impressive
she's got a pretty good serve, a big forehand, she kept opening court up by going CC on her BH and when she got an open space, she let her FH rip.
Nicole tried all she good, slicing more in set two but Liana was just too good.
2nd set 1st 7 games went against serve, Liana then held 5-3 and broke again to win 63 63

Galina Voskoboeva d. Martina Babakova 6-4 6-1
Galina just clobbered her from the FH side
Martina just scrambled everything back, moonballing her, running everything down she could.
Galina should have won alot easier than 6-4 6-1
had 3 set points at 5-2 up, then she got broke still cussing herself for missing chances.
2nd set was one way traffic as soon as she went ahead.

Martina's outfit ;)
beige shorts, and a white adidas vest type of top.

Melissa Berry d. Lenka Tvaroskova 5-7 6-1 6-4
this match hinged all on Melissa and her BH
that was really impressive today, Lenka just didnt have the weapons to hurt her, just moved ball about was her game.

after she lost 1st set 5-7 and she got broke for 0-1 in set 2. i thought she'd give up but she broke back and won next 6 games to level it up.
Set was more like set 1 but Melissa at crunch time didn't fold up and broke at 3-3 and then served out to win

Tessy Van de Ven d. Giorgia Mondani 6-2 6-2
Tessy's serve just WOW for a small girl
she must have served about 10-15 aces
every time i turned around i'd see another ace leaving her racquet.
Giorgia was serving and volleying on all 1st serves but Tessy's returns were too sharp.
Tessy's net play was very good too.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld d. Iveta Gerlova 6-4 6-2
Anna started spraying her forehand all over, BH was steady and it was soon apparent to her Iveta couldnt hurt her
Iveta has little power (she is small) , but a nice enough FH.
Anna's serve got better and once her FH found the range, that was effectively that.

Matea Mezak d. Hannah Collin 6-2 6-4
Matea just moved Hannah about just as i thought she would.
Hannah just made far too many errors in 1st set.
Matea just placed her shots from one corner into another.
Hannah resorted to moonballing for a while but that didnt do much.
Matea served 4 aces to close out the 1st set at 5-2, but it was Aces mixed up with awful errors.
one dropshot of hers bounced twice before it reached the net

2nd set Hannah cut down on her errors and served better, coming in more with a better serve %
Matea was just too good and broke for 5-4 and served out.

Jenny Lindstrom d. Milica Koprivica 7-6(6) 6-2
this was brains against braun.
Jenny cleverly changed her tactics throughout.
Using slices, dropshots, using her opponents pace to manouvere Milcia around
Milcia's game was all on her FH, but jenny kept her moving all the time.
Jenny should have served out 1st set at 5-4 and played a bad game. her racquet did alot of bouncing, but no frame cracking ;)
TB.... Jenny won that as Milcia's FH went long, there was no call and Jenny pointed out and then the umpire called it long.
2nd set it was all Jenny.
Jenny's changed quite a bit, her hairs more darker now.
dont know how she got a scar on her left cheek either

Elke Clijsters d. Federica Piedade 6-1 6-3
Elke was just too good for her, over-powered her in the end as Federica lost heart. Elke's serve was too good and she didnt lose many points.
lefty Federica just rushed too much and missed alot of easy balls on her FH.

Karen Paterson d. Christina Zachariadou 6-2 6-4
Karen's FH just over whelmed her opponent from the little i watched of this.

only saw a little of the last two matches
and Svetlana vs Lynsey was pretty awful, both flyweights moonballing with alot of errors.

didnt see much at all of other match
Irina was 3-1 up when i left.
Irina still could do with some weight loss, if she wants to move up from the 400's.

Thanks very much for the report TBE. Were you just there for one day, or are you attending any other days? Did they charge £10 as Fieke said they were planning to?

Thanks. It isn't actually that rare for a challenger to charge. The Surbiton 25k does (although it has a very strong line-up usually), as did the Felixstowe 25k (for the final day).

Challengers in Oz don't charge! :D (Thank god). ;) The 10k in Amsterdam said you had to pay 10 guilders to get in, but we walked in without seeing anyone to pay (I was quite happy to pay the 10 guilders anyway).

I don't mind paying, especially if you get a programme, as both Felixstowe and Surbiton produce.

I went today as well and pretty glad i did too :)

mixed day for the Swedes
but Hanna Nooni won ;),
she's a bundle of joy on court, very expressive and lets out some very loud comments (in Swedish of course ;) )

Tessy Van de Ven d. Liana Balaci 6-2 7-6(5)
Tessy was again very impressive and handled everything Liana could through at her. Again she served good.
Tessy very agressive on both sides. moving up to put easy balls away. Plus she constantly had Liana on the run from side to side.
Liana didn't play that bad but it wasn't as good as yesterday. 1st set was all Tessy, but Liana broke in 1st game of 2nd then played a sloppy game, rest went with serve. Tiebreaker was very close and i'm sure had Liana won that TB, she would have stepped it up.

Galina Voskoboeva d. Amanda Janes 6-7(7) 6-3 6-4
Amanda was very good in 1st set, serving impressively and put alot of pressure on Galina who struggled to hold, but all games did go with serve. Amanda was slicing to Galina until she could attack on her forehand. Tiebreaker swung one way then another.
Galina led 4-2 and *5-4 but eventually lost it hitting wide.
but in 2nd set she put together an impressive run to lead 4-0, as Amanda had a bit of a relapse.
Galina made a lot of UE's to get broken twice 4-3* but got her game back just in time to take it 6-3.
Final set Galina broke at start and maintained her break all the way through. Amanda was missing more serves and making alot of UE's on her volleys.
match point summed it up, Amanda missed an easy mid court BH pass.

Suzanne Van Hartingsveldt d. Jenny Lindstrom 6-1 7-5
Suzanne played just too good in set 1, and overpowered Jenny.
Jenny was really frustrated that her slices and dropshots werent working too well.
Set two Jenny played alot better and just when she looked like taking the 2nd as she served for it at 5-3, she mad a whole series of UE's and got pretty mad at herself.
yes you guessed it the racquet went flying ;)

Renata Kucerkova d. Aleksandra Srndovic 7-5 6-4
didnt see much of this as this was on the court behind and just looked back to check scores.
Aleksandra blew it big time, she led *5-2
and was also *4-3 in set two.

Elke Clijsters d. Lynsey Davison 6-1 6-0
Talk about a cake walk, this match lasted about 40 mins and Elke was just too good and powerful in all areas.
only game Lynsey won was when she was 0-4 down

Hanna Nooni d. Melissa Berry 6-0 6-4
smart tactics from Hanna hitting alot to Melissa's FH and keeping her back, Melissa could make no impression on the 1st set and it was quickly over 6-0
1st game of 2nd, Berry hit 3 aces in a long game which both could have won, Hanna screamed as she missed two BP's
Melissa hung on and gradually began to get her game going but she made no impression on Hanna's serve but fought well.
Hanna broke through for *3-2, and you could see Melissa visably dejected, her BH game good too late as she started to hit winners of it.
Hanna deservedly won through :) :D
She moved Melissa all over the court and didnt miss much at all.

Anna-Lena Groenefeld d. Matea Mezak 6-3 6-4
Anna's big serve and groundies vs Matea's persistence and deep shots, soaking up everything Anna threw at her.
1st two games were breaks, then Anna broke through for 5-3 and served out.
2nd set 1st 8 went with serve, Anna playing agressive stuff moving into net after pushing Matea back to put easy volleys away. She broke through for 5-4 due to a couple of bad UE's from Matea. Served out to 15 and finished it with a delightful wrong footing pass.

Irina Boulyina d. Karen Paterson 6-3 6-1
a match of two FH's and who could strike 1st.
Karen matched Irina at start but Irina was the one moving forward to put volleys away.
Karen made alot of errors as she got frustrated with herself.
Irina just played too good and hit alot of winners.

If i go tomorrow it'll be to see Elke vs Hanna as this one stands out :)

Thanks Eggy.

I can't believe Irina is only what 19? When i saw her in Edinburgh she looked about 27!!

Bad luck Brits, but they seem to be playing well.

Irina Boulykina looking about 27? It must be the hairstyle which I think makes her look older (she looks much younger when she has her hair down), and she is a big girl (tall, not wide, I disagree with TBE's comment yesterday about saying she needed to lose weight).

Tessy Van de Ven d. Galina Voskoboeva 6-4 6-4
Tessy was just too good for Galina today, taking ball early and putting Galina on back foot, hitting winners on both sides.
Tessy frequently got short replies she would put away with ease.
both sets Galina was broken at 3-3.

Suzanne Van Hartingsveldt d. Renata Kucerkova 2-6 6-1 6-3
I was keeping my eye on the other match more but Renata started off well working the ball around and firing winners on both sides, just solid in set 1
2nd set, Suzanne got the early break as Renata made some UE's, hitting up the middle and getting a silly error.
set 3 more of the same, another early break and kept the pressure up, finished off serving it out with 2 aces in final game much to the delight of Tessy (who she meets in SF)

Anna-Lena Groenefeld d. Irina Boulykina 6-3 4-6 6-0
Anna really should have won this alot easier but somehow lost the plot when a set and *3-0 up,
1st set Anna-Lena moving Irina around, taking ball on and coming in to put easy volleys away. Again her big serve worked well. Pretty easy until *3-0 then she lost focus and then fell away rather badly making error after error.
3rd set she regained focus to win 6-0.

Elke Clijsters d. Hanna Nooni 6-2 4-6 6-2

What can i say about Hanna other than she floats like a butterfly but stings like one too.
frequently she would have Elke out of position and instead of doing something basic, she would try dropshots and wrong footing shots. More often than not she would end up losing the point. Hanna's racquet did alot of bouncing today as after most points she would lose by playing a silly shot she often threw her racquet or screamed at herself in Swedish.

Elke was just too solid for set and a half.
the umpire made some pretty bad calls. Elke was 4-2 up and 15-0, then he called long on baseline twice in a row, 2nd one was clearly in and Hanna went up and told him he made a mistake and replayed the point.
She had 15-40 that game too, Hanna tried one of her silly dropshots and gave Elke the easy chance to win the point, Elke got herself together and won that game and broke Hanna with a couple of BH winners and two more bad UE's from Hanna.

2nd set pretty tight stuff and Hanna struggling to hold serve and Elke came out with "Shit Shit Shit" after she made a few more errors to miss break pts.
Elke broke for 4-3 as Hanna attempted a suicidal dropshot on BP which fluffed into net.
Elke again in control, hitting alot of winners, coming in to volley. at *4-3 40-0 love, Elke lost focus and Hanna played some pretty serious stuff of her own and with help of some UE's from Elke and some pretty amazing net touches, delicate dropshots (which worked for once) she broke back.
Hanna got herself together and worked her next game with some delightful angles and volleys,
Elke was getting pretty tense and she lost her next serve with some more errors, and Hanna won it with a smash just landing in.

3rd set Elke broke for 1-0 from 30-0, Hanna missed an easy volley for game, and made some bad errors
Elke then held from 0-30 with 2 Aces and strong forceful play.
Hanna got back into it by breaking Elke to love with two delightful half-volley winners, and another BH winner, plus a volley winner into open court as she stole in by forcing Elke out of court.
5th game of final set was the turning point.
Hanna having got into trouble at 0-40 with more silly dropshots, then played aggressive hitting out, making winners and had a couple of game points, the 1st of which she made a mess of an easy FH volley, she got broke and that was that really.
Elke held serve and broke again to love and served it out.

I don't think i've ever seen anyone move like Hanna does other than Muhammad Ali (if only she had a better sting)
she really does FLOAT about. she's twinkle toes)
