Jan 21st, 2003, 09:22 PM
major bummer for whoever gets Marissa Irvin as their opponent. Marissa was a late entrant and had to come through qualies. She is the higest ranked player in teh main draw by nearly 20 places, but wont be seeded.

oh and i wonder if Jay went 2day?

Jan 21st, 2003, 09:30 PM
Good question about Allison Bradshaw. I can't see her entered for anything. Can anyone else? I know she had a bad year last year, but I'm sure she has the talent to recover.

Secondly, in the Grenoble 10k, a qualifier, Beltrame IS seeded in the main draw. I suspect that could also happen here with Irvin, unless the USTA rules are different.

paul_masterton
Jan 21st, 2003, 09:35 PM
it can't. As final qualifying round AND around 10 main draw matches are being played. The draw would have to be totally altered, infact it would just about have to be re-done!

Play should ahve finished by now anyways.

Oh, I agree that makes sense for practical timing reasons Paul, but I don't think the rules would have stopped her being seeded, if the qualifying and main draw were played on separate days, like at most challengers.

paul_masterton
Jan 21st, 2003, 10:09 PM
yeah Johnny, i agree. If main draw began tomorrow then she would of been put in a seeded spot.

Helen still isn't 100% which may explain her folding after a tight first set.

Niru vs Amber

I'm surprised Stanford even let Amber play here at this time of the year.
Niru will have her work cut out of her, since Amber's in decent form reaching the final of a NCAA I tourney last week.

Nice to see Jane Chi come out of retirement to play here, but I hope it wasn't just a one-off thing...

VAN EXEL ANOUSJKA (NED) d. (WC) ICHIM IRIS (USA), 62 61
SNYDER TARA (USA) leads AHL LUCIE (GBR), 62 10 (when I left)
(5) CARGILL ANSLEY (USA) d. CZINK MELINDA (HUN), 64 61
MATTEK BETHANIE (USA) d. (3) WASHINGTON MASHONA (USA), 64 46 62
(8) MOUHTASSINE BAHIA (MAR) d. LLAGOSTERA VIVES NURIA (ESP), 36 61 63
BRANDI KRISTINA (USA) d. (WC) HAYNES ANGELA (USA), 63 61
(WC) LIU AMBER (USA) d. SANJEEV NIRUPAMA (IND), 76(5) 76(3)
(4) LEE-WATERS LINDSAY (USA) d. PELLETIER MARIE-EVE (CAN), 36 76(1) 61

Final Qualifying:

IRVIN d. PERRY, 64 64

CASONI d. SCHRUFF, 63 61
MEUSBURGER d. SITJA, 76(7) 75

Couldn't get there till the evening when Nirupama's match was at the end of the first set. Had to leave in a couple of hours too, but almost all the matches were done by then.

Sorry that I could only watch Lucie for a few minutes. Generally Snyer was all over her at that time.

As for Amber Liu, she played a solid match. Niru is still getting the rust off her game. I thought I saw Niru serve the fastest I have ever seen (now that a 2-year shoulder problem is gone) but only about 30% of first serves were going in. Amber had trouble with her strong first serve but once the ball was in play, she was really solid. Niru was experimenting with a lot of things, just to get the feel back and was making a lot of mistakes too, but I was impressed how well Amber handled some of the unusual things NS was pulling out - drops, high bounces, net-hugging slice returns (she has a stinger of a slice), but Amber send it all back with top spin! .. Solid play from her, especially on the high bounces and lobs. Got a really lucky call go her way late in the first tiebreaker on a ball that was 2 inches out, but she earned the second tiebreaker. Niru was up 4-1 in the second set before Amber steadied herself up and evened it and broke Niru twice to go up 5-4 and serve. She got all nervous for a brief period there, serving two double faults with Niru teeing up on her serve suddenly (Amber needs more sting on her serve; the rest of the game is solid). She wasted two set points and dropped serve for 5-5. Niru had two set points at 6-5 on Amber's serve too, but now Amber had got over her sudden shakiness. Held serve and forced Niru into backhand mistakes in the tiebreaker.

That is the only match report I have. Generally NS's game is coming around, but she admitted that she will need at least another 5-6 matches at this level to get one year of rust off.

Amber was of course quite happy, and was on her cell-phone for a long time, so I couldn't talk to her.

Jay

PS: Not sure if I will have time the whole rest of the week to go; busy week at work. Will try thursday again though. Sorry to be of hardly much use to you all, but at least I got the WTA supervisor to promise emails with scores at the end of the day!

Thanks for the report, Jay. :wavey:

Do you have any idea where Niru is playing next?
She's not on the list for Rockford next week...

BTW, she's played only 2 events with her Protected Ranking : US Open & Fullerton. Shouldn't that mean that she has 6 tourneys left, not 5?

Anyway, it's promising to hear that she's slowly getting her "groove" back.

danker -- I was thinking about that. I was sure she said 5 left, but she should have six left. As for where she is playing next, she is not sure yet. She knows she needs the one or two week breaks to do some more training and to work on specifics (and lose a bit of weight too, I think). If she does things too fast, she would end up using all the six events while she is not ready yet. At least the last couple she needs to pick up some 20 odd points at some challenger somehow and position herself for challenger qualies at least. It is tough but I was quite sure that she is serious about doing it till end of 2004 summer and quit only if she is not in the top-175 by then. Her problem now is that she is in the bay area where her husband works, and she is having a tough time finding a good hitting partner around there. If that does not come through she might hit the road faster and may go to the two Indian satellites (doubtful right now, as it is in 3 weeks) - because otherwise she will get rusty again! I think she should get in touch with the Stanford coach and set up something.

Too bad about the injury to Seda's stomach. She must have really dealt with it well to pull out the 2nd set. It must have come back again in the third.
