CoryAnnAvants#1 Oct 15th, 2002, 04:48 PM Allison!:bounce: Let's go girl, 2000 US Open form all the way!
BK4ever Oct 15th, 2002, 07:55 PM Bradshaw #1...can I be honest :D.
Obviously Allison has the goods. But she is no way near duplicating that form. This all based on me seeing at the Bronx Challenger and the Open. She needs a COACH. I don't know why she doesnt split a coach with someone else, say Abigail for instance, they both play very similar and have the same issues. She needs to lose alot of pounds. Her movement is...theres none! Its sad, but she will probably go down the route of unfulfilled promise.
CoryAnnAvants#1 Oct 15th, 2002, 08:01 PM BK, is this getting back at me for my Bielik dumping?;)
I do agree w/you though on some points, she has no movement and she does need a coach. However, when you watch her play, she can construct points that make you do a double take. When you watch those, she looks like the #25 player, not #250. However, there are matches like at Bronx and the Open when you see her play points and go "ewww" lol. I know she's an aggressive player, but she's gotta figure out when to go for the shot. That being said, I think she'll be top 50 at some point. I'm sure she knows what to work on, the question is will she actually do it. A win against Camerin, who prefers clay courts, is a step in the right direction

And what is with Nicole Pitts getting so many WCs into main draws? She is not having any success with them. Is it a sponsor thing? Give somebody eles a chance! Playing some qualies could be helpful.
TheBoiledEgg Oct 16th, 2002, 03:44 PM Nicole can only get 3 WC's into MD and 3 into QD
she's 15 and the USTA think highly of her, but this year she's done nothing sadly
spiceboy Oct 16th, 2002, 03:56 PM In last year's New Haven qualifying Nicole defeated top 75 player (then...) MJ Martinez in straight sets so it wasn't too bad for a 14 year old girl. That was the beginning of a terrible year for MJ...
CoryAnnAvants#1 Oct 16th, 2002, 04:31 PM Hey guys!
I had a couple of days off of school to fly down to Arizona for my sisters wedding..I was pleasantly surprised to find this tourney a short drive from where my family was staying, so I drove over and got to watch 2 full matches...I didn't see Allison though!
Gabriela Lastra d. Nicole Pitts 6-4 6-2
This result was far more off of Nicole's errors than Lastra doing anything. Lastra's game is best described as pretty. She hits a beautiful ball and has a good volley, but she's just not agressive. Her volleys are the best I've seen in a while, but she does not have a dependable route up there, and was forced to wait for a short ball. When she got up there, Pitts was just dominated. Nicole has beautiful groundstrokes, but she was missing a lot. There was no margin for error. She needs to work on her volleys ASAP as well. She makes Seles look like Raymond up there:rolleyes:
In the beginning, Nicole was controlling the tempo and eating up Gaby's 85 MPH FIRST SERVES and 70 MPH second serves (that's what they looked like at least.) Gradually though, Lastra began to run more shots down and get her feet moving. Nicole was a bit flustered that she couldn't put points away as easily and blew a 3-1 lead to make it 4-4. Lastra broke Pitts and served out the set. Nicole had 2 opportunities to even the match, but Lastra held on with a few sloppy errors Nicole to win the set 6-4. In the second set, they each held to 2-2, but win Pitts lost her serve to go down 2-3, that was the end. She lost her head and groundstokes, and Lastra FINALLY started to be groundstrokes. Lastra easily took the last 3 games to win this match 6-4 6-2. Nicole was so upset after the loss.
Ansley Cargill d. Renata Kolbovic 7-6 7-5
This was smart, classic tennis, and a fun match to watch. Neither of them have a weapon to give them cheap points (Kolbovic's backhand on occasion but that's it.) Cargill relies on people missing, but Kolbovic was very solid from the baseline. This turned out to be a chess match, with rallies often going upwards of 15-20 strokes, as they both mixed up the pace and spin beautifully and had to wait for the right shots. In the tiebreak, Renata finally started to get a bit tight and Ansley took it 7-2. Neither of them have huge serves, but they were holding consistently. (Cargill dropped twice, Renata three times) Kolbovic broke Cargill at 4-4 to serve for the set at 5-4. For the first time in three matches I've watched Ansley in, she took some pretty risky chances. She smacked a running forehand, hit a dropshot from behind the baseline, and pounded a backhand that caught the corner of both lines. After a backhand volley winner, she was PUMPED! She easily held at love, and a Kolbovic backhand wide at 5-6 15-40 gave her the match. She threw her arms in the air, clearly happy about the result. I must say though that Renata was incredibly nice, even after a 2 hour loss. She posed for a picture w/me and we chatted for a few minutes. She was just lovely! Too bad she didn't win:sad:
This was my first challenger experience and there was one thing I noticed. Most of the players here are solid, but don't have a big weapon other than consistency. Those with big weapons like Pitts or Bradshaw can't put the ball in the court long enough for it to mean anything. Even though she played the worst out of the 4 I saw, Pitts has the brightest future in my eyes. Kolbovic's career is winding down, but I think Lastra will be a solid doubles player. As for Ansley...she better get used to places like Sedona, cuz she'll be playing challengers for a while. You can't break into the top 50 solely by being a backboard.

Looks like you enjoyed yourself. :) Especially Ansley and Renata's match. Your observation about Ansley I hope goes wrong. She was a top junior and it's sad if I have to see her playing challengers and not breaking in to a top 50 player.

auntie janie Oct 18th, 2002, 01:38 PM Guys, thanks for the Nicole Pitts info. It just seems to me that she turned pro way too soon. She might be doing okay if she had stayed in the juniors, building her game and her confidence instead of losing it. Once a young player turns pro, it seems like the pressure is really on to perform & justify her/her parents'/her managers' decision. Though the USTA wants to help, these Wild Cards only seem to add more pressure. Best of luck to her in a difficult situation.
