View Full Version : Cry of Racism Incident at Satellite Qualifying?

Hello. I don't want to make too much of this, but a mate of mine told me today that there was a racial incident in a third round match at an American satellite qualifying event awhile back. I'm not sure how long ago but it was definitely this year.

It involved Dutch player Bo Verhulsdonk and an African-American player, whose name I'm trying to find out. Apparently, the African-American girl was displeased with how the match was going and called Bo Verhulsdonk, a "white, racist bitch" at the end of the match.

The situation happened because of a dispute over the game score in the final game. Bo believed she won the match on match point but her opponent believed that another point had to be played. The African-American girl allegedly went ballistic and started calling Bo "a white, racist bitch" over and over.

The girls' family were sitting in the stands and had been getting heavily "enthusiastic," shall we say, throughout the match. I'm thinking that maybe they distracted their girl and she somehow lost track or mistook the score at some point in the final game.

The referee was called out to help solve the dispute, but when the African-American girl saw that the ref was a white woman, she claimed that they were "both in on it" and then proceeded to call them both "white, racist bitches" and stormed off the court! Allegedly, her family cheered her on when she was done abusing the official and her opponent.

My mate is also a pro player and she and Bo will be playing the upcoming Aussie challengers. She told me of this incident today but couldn't remember the name of Bo's opponent. I'm wondering who it is. I might get to meet Bo in a few days time, but I don't want to ask her about that in case she is somehow offended.

I was wondering if anybody else saw or heard about what happened and whether or not they knew the African-American girls' name. Just really curious to know.

So sue me, I'm nosey. :p

Here are Bo's results this year:
http://perlhth.tripod.com/cgi-bin/wta.pl?p1=4294

Judging from that, she hasn't played any 3rd matches in America this year.

If Bo was the one that won the match, it could only be one of these 2 players:
* Chrissie Seredni (USA)
* Lilivette Rivera (USA)

The only match which could be the one you described would be the one in Hilton Head against Chrissie Seredni, although it was 2nd round.
Seredni has just turned 15. Here's her record:

Her only wins this year were against Fernanda Silva and Dewonder Davis, both being famous bagel girls. ;)

GoDomi, Bo beat Lilivette...

Here is a pic of Chrissie:

She doesn't look black to me...

I think it was Liliette...I think she goes to or used to go to a predominantly black university. It can only be her...if your info is correct.

Lilvette was at Greenville $10K. I never saw her, but she lost her match in qualifying rd 1 6-0, 6-0.

She partnered Nancy L-C in dubs there and of course got double bageled in main draw too.....hmm....it would have to be her, but Lilvette is not that good.

And it's not Asha, because she only travels with her sister.

OK, then it was probably Rivera.

Although I can't understand why you would start a fight being 0-6 3-5 down.

truly shocking but not altogether suprising

in these events you call your lines and alot of "bitching" goes on
you got to trust your opponent to call fair, one call goes iffy and tensions build up.

And I witnessed two matches --

One where the families were ready to kill each other - Monique Viele's and Jonita Randolph's...

and another where the players wanted to kill each other --

Asha Rolle and Julie Smekodub

Apparently the entire ITF/USTA 10K circuit is "in on it" because Rivera can't win s*it! It's an unwritten rule that if you play dubs w/Nancy Loeffler-Caro, you suck:rolleyes:

Poor Bo! I hope she does well when she comes to Australia! It's a pity I can't go see her play! (I'm assuming she'll be playing at the QLD circuit right)?

Yep, Bo's playing the Queensland challengers, and South Aussie ones too, I think.

Lilivete Rivera. That must be the name I'm looking for. All my mate said was that it was an American satellite qualifying event. I recall she said second or third round in quallies, but then again, by the time it got to me, it was third hand information.

Hey folks,

Just in case you're still interested, this might be the incident in question:
http://www.centralfloridatennis.com/ClayCourt16Day1.asp

It's from the Winter Park tournament website, although it doesn't mention anything about things specifically said. But it does have pics!

Yah gotta stand tough, beat em with your raquet and not the mouth. Then again I can imagine me being a 15 year old kid and calling them racist bitches too;) Do it but not on the tennis court. Win first then cuss them fools out!:)

So it was Asha Rolle's sister Tiya Rolle who made the racist comments then?

VSFan1 aka Joshua L.
Oct 9th, 2002, 01:02 PM
No, it was not Tiya....she only travels with her sister, Asha. If Tiya did do this, then I would be extremely shocked.

She's not racist, because I'm white and we sat there and talked during Asha's match at Greenville this year. And another white tennis player (I don't know who) was there with us.

By the way Dawn, I agree for standing up and defending yourself in an adult situation. Calling someone a "racist bitch" is not very adult like. It could be handled more gracefully and therefore if you are being discriminated against, more action will get done.

I only know a couple from Perth, and the rest are either from Melbourne or Sydney... or the respective states! :(

I didn't even know we used to have someone from QLD posting... when was that Matt?

I'm gonna be in Brisbane next week, so it's a pity that the tourney's aren't closer to there! I usually go to Brisbane around this time of year! Maybe next year I'll have to think about going a bit further north instead!

Oh dear. It looks like it was Tiya Rolle. Tsk, tsk.

Apologies to Lilivette Rivera. My bad. :o

I saw that match, but I did not hear ANY racist remarks! They just had a pretty bad scoring dispute and there were also a lot of line call disputes - that's all. If Tiya had called Bo or even the umpire a 'racist bitch' she would have been defaulted!
