lin Oct 4th, 2002, 12:23 PM keep going Tatiana :D
King Aaron Oct 4th, 2002, 12:35 PM Sonya :)
Tatiana :)
Jacqueline :(
auntie janie Oct 4th, 2002, 12:39 PM Neyssa was a WC???
Keep going, Sonya & Neyssa! :)
Erzili Oct 4th, 2002, 02:20 PM No, Neyssa is not a wildcard she is the number 8 seed.
Erzili Oct 4th, 2002, 02:24 PM The USTA is not overly generous with WC's for players who are not American, and Haiti (due to reasons of political unrest and so forth) does not sponsor any challenger tournaments. Neyssa certainly deserves a wildcard to a $25,000 or $50,000 Challenger though. IMO.
BK4ever Oct 4th, 2002, 02:25 PM Damn...Neyssa has to play Ditty who she lost to last week. Neyssa is really earning her way the hard way.
rated_next Oct 4th, 2002, 04:00 PM Sonya vs. Tatiana - hopefully, the winner of this match will win the finals as well
keep going to neyssa as well :)
VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Oct 4th, 2002, 08:05 PM The USTA should not be overly generous with WC's to foreign players. They pay and host these events for the betterment of Amerian tennis. That is its motto:
"To promote the growth and endurance of American tennis."
paul_masterton Oct 4th, 2002, 08:20 PM well everyother country gives countless WC's to American players, about time they gave something back, even if it is just in a poxy $10k
VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Oct 4th, 2002, 09:20 PM Name it Paul ;)
Erzili Oct 4th, 2002, 10:23 PM Actually "American" means people from North America (Canada and the US), Central America and South America, not to mention Puerto Rico, Guam and any other territories/protectorates etc that I have in my total ignorance forgotten to mention. And I don't believe that the USTA statement includes the "exclusive" terminology of "To promote the growth and endurance of ONLY American (read United States) tennis players."
I just think that occasionally the USTA should give WC's in Challenger tournaments to somewhat mature and serious professional (read not a 14 year old in juniors) players starting out on the WTA circuit that might not otherwise have those opportunities. I am not saying that the USTA should subsidize their whole careers.
Ream me up the ass for this if you want but how many WC's do players like Ashley Harkleroad really need on the challenger circuit - especially with the sweet sponsorship deals that many of them already have? I am not saying that she didn't deserve any of them (she did) but it seems somewhat egregious given how many other "American" players would substanially benefit from just one of those opportunities.
My understanding of the WC situation is also that it is based on a "scratch our back & we will scratch yours", meaning that players who come from countries that can't offer viable challenger tournaments do not receive WC's in other countries. This seem a bit defeatist (to the profession of tennis). Understanding that each country wants it's own players to succeed (this is a given), it doesn't mean that you have to screw other players opportunities into the ground in order to achieve this.
Gus Oct 4th, 2002, 11:00 PM lol
VSFan1 aka Joshua L. Oct 4th, 2002, 11:37 PM Erzili, call it arrogance if you want, but most "Americans" that live in USA consider ourselves "American" as exclusively those living in the USA.
And right now, the USTA does not need any assistance from other National Tennis Associations because we are doing just fine with plenty of challengers on every level, in addition to our own WTA tournament at New Haven.
The girls here can play here and get pro experience much easier than going overseas.
In the future, however, there may come a time when this is no longer true, but for right now, it is.
Meesh Oct 4th, 2002, 11:47 PM Anyone have the details on this tourney... Winter Park is about 5 to 10 minutes away from me. :)

Helen Lawson Oct 7th, 2002, 01:27 PM Hey, guys, I was in WP this weekend (don't ask) and caught the last two sets of the singles final. Ditty d. Uhlirova ?-?, 4-6, 6-4. There was no scoreboard, so I do not know the score of the first set.
It was a good match, I did not know what to expect, but it was pretty fun to watch. Uhlirova (who everyone kept calling "Blotka" or "Vlotka" or something) was really dominating in the second set and was up like 4-1 or something at one point, but really struggled to close out the set, having to play through two trains passing about 100 yards away and a car alarm. It was even in the third set at 4-4, but Ditty got a break and then served it out. Uhlirova is very animated and plays with a lot of emotion. She runs down everything and has a nice cross-court backhand. She hit like 3-4 amazing winners. She was hustling her ass! A lot f her first serves did not go in but seemed well-hit. Ditty ran less hot and seemed more experienced and composed. She returns serve really well and has a great forehand. It was a high quality match. There were 30-40 people there. Uhlirova was devastated when she lost, she put her face in a towel and was sobbing, I felt really bad for her. :( The program said the winner got 5 points and the finalists, 4 points.
I'm thinking about going to the Largo one in a couple of weeks if I am still in town.
TheBoiledEgg Oct 7th, 2002, 01:31 PM bad luck Tatiana in semis  :(
Julie won another title
thats two in 2 weeks
auntie janie Oct 8th, 2002, 12:36 PM Congrats Julie!
Thanks for the report, Helen! it sounds like fun. :)
AUSBOY Oct 8th, 2002, 02:26 PM Thanks for the report Helen, please post more if you go to Largo!!!!!
And if you get a chance to see some aussies play, I'd love to here about it!
Helen Lawson Oct 8th, 2002, 02:36 PM I have been looking for the Largo thing on usta.com and I cannot find it. It was in the pre-printed program, but maybe that is outdated and it was cancelled or moved but I will keep you posted if I attend another one. It was really fun, I would love to go to another one.
I really liked Uhlirova, she had some really great shots and played with a lot of heart.
