PREVIEW FOR US OPEN

At Wimbledon, I was completely wrong with my predictions. My pick Palyvuchenkova had a good tournament with a run to the semifinals but didn't go all the way. Timea won the tournament and she didn't even make my prediction list! A lot has happened since then so Andrew is here to give his own views and opinions on the draw. Who will get the kiss of death this time?

FAVORITES

Amandine Hesse - What would the favorites list be without Amandine Hesse? She has been #1 in the world for awhile now and leads the tour with 5 Junior titles. However, the acclaimed Frenchie has struggled in the big events suffering a Rd 1 defeat at Roland Garros and QF defeat at Wimbledon. She may be the Jelena Jankovic of the tour, being #1 without making a Grand Slam final! Her year wouldn't be complete without a Grand Slam. She has a strong two sets but a weak third one. I'm not too confident in her chances to break through.
PREDICTION: Semifinals

Kristina Kucova - My personal pick for the title right here! She was placed in the toughest quarter of the draw with 4th seed Timea Babos and dangerous floater Bojana Jovanovski. After going through the early adversity, I predict that Kristina will storm to her first Grand Slam title. As the only player outside the Top 4 to have 2 titles, she will have pressure to take home her third. If she can get through the early trouble, I really like her chances.
PREDICTION: Winner

Timea Babos - She won the last Grand Slam at Wimbledon shocking everyone to take home the title. Plus she comes back the next week and takes the title at Fiji. However, she hasn't been in her strongest form since. If Timea can regain that kind of mentality, I can see her taking home her second Grand Slam title.
PREDICTION: Quarterfinals

CONTENDERS

Anastasia Palyvuchenkova - She's a big time player in my opinion. Dubbed as my pick for the title at Wimbledon, she dealt with the pressure well. However, she has struggled a ton since but she seems to rise up in the bigger events. I predict her to rise up to the challenge. With a tough challenge from Filipovski, whom she has a bad record against and won a title after Wimbledon, in Rd 1, I think this prediction can haunt me.
PREDICTION: Finals

Pamela Montez - She was World #1 and winner of a Grand Slam at Roland Garros. The steady player from Mexico hasn't coped well with the pressure. She hasn't won a title since! However, she is still at #2 in the world so her results obviously can't be that bad... But this is my UPSET BLUE SPECIAL. Glushko to defeat Montez in the first round.
PREDICTION: Round 1

DARKHORSES

Bojana Jovanovski - She's a real up and down player. The Serbian standout made the finals at Wimbledon this year coming out of nowhere so she is really good under the pressure. Her results after Wimbledon have been subpar and it has gotten her out of the Top 8 for the Open. She had a strong performance at the Wildcard event last week so if she can get her head together for this tournament, she can make it far. However, she has a tough task ahead of her going up against her conqueror at Wimbledon, Timea Babos in the first round.
PREDICTION: Round 1

Aranza Salut - She's the real darkhorse in my opinion. She has had mostly dismal performances all year but at the Wildcard event last week, she made a strong run to the finals. She has a strong first two set but arguably her third set may be the WORST set on tour. If she can conserve energy and win matches in straights, she can have a very good run here. Plus she's placed in a very safe part of the draw.
PREDICTION: Semifinals

Julia Glushko - Like Aranza, she's had a pretty dismal year. However at the Wildcard event, she showed some life beating World #1 Amandine Hesse and World #9 Urszula Radwanska on the way to a second place finish. I can see her beating Montez in the first round, but I don't think her mentality will hold for another big upset against Palyvuchenkova.
PREDICTION: Quarterfinals

What a performance from Nikola. That extra rest seemed to benefit her as she came out firing and never fell behind in this match. On the other hand, Amandine was flat though she did fight back from 5-3 and set points to 5-5 but from there Nikola was gold. Nikola advances to yet another semifinal. Will she finally breakthrough to finally win her first title? As for Amandine, she finishes without a major title in her pocket despite the brilliant year she has had.

After closing out the first set, it look as if Timea would finish off this victory in straight but Laura got very, VERY lucky. She now advances to her first GS semifinal and will face Nikola Hofmanova for a spot in the final.

Aleksandra only won her first match of the season last week at the Wildcard event and now she is in the semifinals of a Grand Slam tournament. She started and ended this match plying beautiful and more importantly CONFIDENT tennis. She ended the first set with an ace and went ahead in the second 4-1. She then suffered a mini-choke as Kristina mixed up her game to tie it back up. But in the important moments of the match, she was the better player.

QF: Alexandra Filipovski vs. Julia Glushko

Filipovski def. Glushko 3-6, 6-3, 6-1

After the first set struggle, Alexandra turned it around nicely in the second and especially third set almost handing out the bagel. People and I apparently forgot that Alexandra is the only player outside the Top 10 who has won a title. Plus it was on the hardcourts and in the summer series so she must be in some kind of form. She will face Aleksandra Krunic for a spot in the final.

And Laura makes her FIRST Grand Slam final! To make the final, she had to beat 7th seed Kucova, 4TH Seed Babos, and now 5th seed Hofmanova. She played with A LOT of skill in this match but she also got a lot of luck at the ends of the first and third sets. But nonetheless, she earned this win and will for sure make a huge leap in the rankings. As for Nikola, she didn’t choke that badly but luck was certainly against her in this match. I have faith that she’ll win at least one title by the end of the season …

And THAT is how you beat Alexandra Filipovski! I just can’t believe that two players who haven’t had much success can lay out their best tennis in a Grand Slam event! Compared to her opponent in the final, Aleksandra has had a much easier road dropping only one set to a slumping 3rd seed Larcher de Brito before beating 6th seed Mladenovic and Filipovski in straights for a spot in the final.

BEST GRAND SLAM FINAL THIS SEASON! What a match and it’s surprising coming from the last two players in the ranking system! Laura came out the stronger player but then Aleksandra(with a lot of luck) was able to snag the second set. However, Laura didn’t let that get to her as both players let out their best tennis in the final set. Laura had championships points early on but couldn’t get them. Yes, she was very lucky. She won so many CTs against you and at the BACK END of the sets she won against Nikola. Blame random.org :o Sometimes I want to just alternate coin tosses like one for Babos for example... And then the next one for Robson but I think the CTs from random.org make it interesting. :drool:

The sad thing about this is that Laura's coach 5ean probably doesn't know about his win! I haven't seen him post here once except for in the sign up thread... I also haven't seen him post on the pro tour thread so I think he may have forgotten that he is playing this game. :sad:

Once we get more players I will retire the players that hardly post here or send points. For the most part, at least the top players do care about this game (I hope) besides Larcher de Brito (despite great results!) and Mladenovic probably... :sad:

This game can be so much better with just a little bit more dedication and stuff but oh well... :sad: I still have a good time running the game anyway. :)
