Geisha Aug 25th, 2008, 11:06 PM Serena to make debut in Sydney
http://i045.radikal.ru/0801/3a/c101e45160fc.jpg
Sydney, AUS - American tennis star, Serena Williams, will make her professional tournament debut at the Medibank International in Sydney, Australia. Williams was scheduled to play in Gold Coast last week, but pulled out of her opening round match with a right knee injury.
"I wasn't feeling that great last week. My knee was a little sore, so I just decided to play it safe and make my debut in Sydney," Serena said. "I'm super excited to finally be playing, and I've been practicing really hard, so I don't want to enter a tournament and then pull out because of a silly injury".
Serena will play the Australian Open next weeek, which will be her first ever Grand Slam. "Grand Slams are what I've been dreaming about since I was a little girl. I want to win every tournament at least once, and once I do that, I'll be satisfied with my career. I haven't won any yet, so I'll probably be sticking around for a while!"

...I hope you grow up to actually be fat. Marion isn't anything close to fat for a normal person. Yes, she is overweight for a tennis player. But not even as much as Kleybona (no idea how to spell that!!).
I find it awful the stick Marion gets. She is 4-1 up anyway and I hope she does well, even if I kind of would like to see Lindsay do well here. But ignorant people like you are just infuriating. I hope karma comes round and makes you nice and fat when you're older, to be honest. See how you like it.

Daniela shows great excitement after closing an emphatic win against Lindsay Davenport
Sydney, AUSTRALIA - A strong start to the season continues for World #15 Daniela Hantuchova … At the Tier I Medibank International in Sydney, Daniela overcame World #12 and solid rebound ace player Lindsay Davenport 6-3, 6-4 for a spot in the round of 16. Coming off a quarterfinal showing last week at the event in Gold Coast, Daniela came in beaming with confidence. Daniela said, “Yeah, I had a strong showing last week in Gold Coast. I’m really happy that I could continue my strong play here at a bigger event in Sydney.”
In a match featuring two of the cleanest hitters on tour, it was Daniela who started the stronger player. She broke immediately for 2-1 after breaking at 15 with a strong backhand forcing a Davenport error. That mistake proved crucial as the two players held serve throughout until 5-3. At this point, Daniela was able to get another break and the set as Lindsay continued to struggle with her first serve percentage.
In the second set saw Lindsay start strongly in the second set going up 3-0. Using a combination of power and placement on her groundstrokes, she got Daniela on the move and often was able to put away an easy approach shot. However, Daniela started to hit the mark on her groundstrokes and being aggressive which saw her win 6 of the last 7 games to close out the straight set victory. Daniela said, “It’s definitely my best victory all year. I played pretty well from start to finish and I’m really to have closed it out in straight sets. It’s 3 more wins than I had last year so at this point, I’ll take it!”
In the round of 16, Daniela will face 5th seed Amelie Mauresmo of France. Like Kirilenko and Davenport, she is a solid rebound ace player. On the encounter Daniela commented, “It will be a very tough match for sure. I’m going to have to play something like I did today if I want a chance at the win. Right now, I’m really happy with my tennis and I just hope to continue playing in this way.”

Geisha Aug 30th, 2008, 07:33 PM Serena ousted in opening match

Serena reacts after hitting another unforced error.
Sydney, AUS - The Medibank International's opening day was rough for the Williams family, with both Serena and Venus losing their respective matches. The younger of the two sisters, Serena, lost in a three-set slugfest, 5-7 6-2 6-4, to Sania Mirza of India.
"It was definitely a tough day, especially because my match went the distance," said Serena, who committed an unheralded fifty-three unforced errors and three double faults. "I don't double fault, so I hit a few in the second and third sets that were uncalled for. The air was humid, and my shots were sort of spraying, but I was happy with the way I fought to the end".
Serena found many negatives in her performance, but noted that there were positives to take away from the match, and the experience of playing professional tennis. "I know what I need to do now. It was my first match, and I played competitively. I just didn't win when I needed to win. I didn't win the big points, but I can only improve from here".
One of the highlights of the match was Serena's fashion. Due to her anticipated debut on the Authentic Tennis Tour, she signed with two sponsors, Puma and Nike. "The sports companies have been really amazing. I believe I'll wear Puma for the rest of the Australian season, and then Nike until Wimbledon. I'll switch it around for sure".

Daniela Hantuchova strikes a backhand against Amelie Mauresmo of France
Sydney, AUSTRALIA – And the wins keep on coming … That’s a sentence that Daniela Hantuchova will never be tired of hearing. The World #15 from Slovakia advanced to her second consecutive quarterfinal upsetting solid rebound ace player and World #5 Amelie Mauresmo 6-4, 4-6, 6-4. Daniela said, “Yeah, my tennis finally going into its place. I do always want to win on the court but I also have to remember to enjoy myself and just play my game. I think sometimes I may put too much pressure to win.”
That pressure was certainly not relevant in the first set. Daniela, who beat solid rebound ace player Lindsay Davenport yesterday, started the match in a similar fashion placing her serve well and attacking with her groundstrokes. The two players held serve throughout until 3-3 where Daniela finally broke hitting a forehand winner off a tentative Mauresmo forehand. Daniela was able to serve it out comfortably to take the first set 6-4.
Amelie, who was Wimbledon champion last year, is known for great variety in her game. In the second set, she started to use this variety like the slice and mixing her spins. That was enough to draw errors off the Hantuchova racquet. On her second set point, Amelie closed out the set 6-4 with a beautiful backhand volley painting the baseline corner to seal the match at one set a piece.
Daniela is known as one of the cleanest hitters in the game but also one of the streakiest players. She can have a patch where she hits very clean shots for winners and forced errors but also have one where she hits a million unforced errors. Amelie continued her tactic of mixing up her spins and slices. She also started to become more aggressive by serving and volleying and flattening out the forehand. She looked to be running towards a comfortable victory as she lead 4-2. Knowing Amelie hasn’t won a match all season, Dani noticed that she was starting to become a bit more tentative. Going back to being aggressive paid off as she won 16 of the next 22 points to close out the match 6-4 in the third.
After the match Daniela said, “Yeah, obviously it was a huge win for me. I played very well and I’m happy to have taken my second top 10 win of the year.” On Amelie’s tennis she said, “She started to play much better in the second and you know I thought like maybe I will lose this match. But I noticed that she was starting to become more tentative looping her forehand and slicing her backhand too often. So I just told myself that this is my chance to come back and fortunately everything turned out great.”
In the quarterfinals, she will face Julie Ditty of the USA. On the encounter she said, “Yeah Julie like myself is having a great week. I know she beat my friend Ana [Ivanovic] in the first round and also the Australian Open champion last year in [Tamarine] Tanasugarn. I’m just going to focus on my game and make sure I’m doing the right tactics on the court and not on Julie. I’ll do my best to take home the win for sure.”
