WSC would like to honor our first Level 2 player and current world no. 1 Amelie Mauresmo for her fantastic achievements in our league. Mauresmo has won an impressive 5 singles titles includng the first grand slam of the year in Australia earlier this year. The other singles vicotries came at Tier I events Sydney and Dubai; and Tier II events Gold Coast, and Hobart.

Her doubles resume isn't too shabby either taking the titles at Tier I's Miami and Charleston; and Tier II Hobart with doubles partner Anna Chakvetadze. A semi-final showing at the Australian Open and also making the finals of the doubles event in Stockholm helped cement Mauresmo's position at the top of the doubles rankings also.

Other achievements of Amelie's througout this season is making a final showing in Bali, the semi-finals of Stockholm, and the quarter-finals of Wimbledon and Charleston. She has held the number 1 position in this league since taking the Sydney title, and is undefeated on the rebound ace surface.

Please help me in congratulating Amelie on all of her fantastic achievements!!!!!!!

Jelena Anticipates Los Angeles Start!

She is a player from Serbia who traveled to the Bolletieri Academy at a young age to play tennis. The legend Nick himself dubbed that, “she is a huge talent who is going to have a great career on the WSC tour.” This player in Jelena Jankovic has quickly made her presence on the tour already reaching the Top 10 (though currently at #12) in just four tournaments.

Mutual respect between the World #1 and newcomer

The start of her career came at a Tier I event in Berlin where she reached the semifinals winning over Anna Chakvetadze and Na Li who upset Charleston champion Elena Dementieva before falling to the eventual champion Justine Henin 4-6, 7-5*, 6-3. On the doubles court, with Nicole Vaidisova they were able to snag their first title.

The next week, Jelena really brought up the level of her game in Roma. It was an amazing tournament for “JJ” sliding her way to the finals defeating 8th seed Dinara Safina, 2nd seed Maria Sharapova, 5th seed Svetlana Kuznetsova before falling to World #1 Justine Henin 7-6, 7-6 in the finale. Jelena said, “It is my first final and honestly I thought I played very well. It was a very high quality match and Justine really deserved to win.” On playing on the clay JJ said, “It’s my favorite surface. I grew up playing on the hard courts but I think the clay really suits my game best.” On the doubles court, JJ and Nicole took home their second consecutive title.

And it was on to the first Grand Slam of many in JJ’s career. She was dubbed one of the potential favorites for the title but couldn’t come through in the big time. After winning her first two matches over Dinara Safina and 3rd seed Samantha Stosur before falling to 5th seed Steffi Graf in the quarterfinals. JJ said, “I was very nervous during this match and I couldn’t play my best tennis. But Steffi deserved to win. She isn’t #5 for no reason. I really enjoyed the tournament and am excited to come back next year.” JJ and Nicole could not make it three consecutive titles as they fell in the semifinals to Henin and Hantiuchova.

JJ continued her play on the clay after Roland Garros during Fed Cup. She was set in Team Frauresch with doubles partner Nicole Vaidisova, Jelena Dokic, and Tatiana Golovin. Set to play singles, she dominated her Fed Cup debut ousting both Harkleroad and Cornet to help Frauresch win the tie.

After Fed Cup, it was on to her first non-clay tournament: Wimbledon. Jelena said, “It’s the most prestigious event of the year for all the players. This is my first grass event so honestly I don’t know what to expect. I just feel honored to be here.” JJ showed the heart of a champion, struggling with injury, but just beating Alize Cornet 3-6, 7-5, 7-5 in the first round. The injury was just too much for JJ against now World #1 Amelie Mauresmo. After dropping the first set 6-2, she took an injury timeout but it just further prevented the inevitable. Amelie sliced and diced her way to an easy 6-2, 6-2 victory.

Round 2 of Fed Cup, which was scheduled to happen after Wimbledon, was cancelled so now we are left at the start of the hard court season here in Los Angeles. JJ has come early and has already been practicing hard to make a strong hard court debut. JJ said, “I really love to play on the hard courts. I grew up playing on these courts. I hope to start this season just as well as I did on the dirt.” JJ is set to face 3rd seed Samantha Stosur in the first round. On the encounter JJ said, “It’s going to be a tough encounter for sure. I remember playing her on clay and I won. However clay is my best surface and probably her worst. I’m going to have to be serving well as she has one of the best serves on the WSC tour.” On future goals JJ said, “First off, I hope to win Los Angeles[laughs]. I already have a couple of double titles and would like to take home one for singles as well. But I have to take it one match at a time because there are plenty of great hard court players in the tournament. On a bit of the long term, I hope to be seeded at the US Open.”

After a long break in the middle of the WSC season all the players are raring to go! Momo has taken her steroids, JJ has put on her glitter, Dokic has stuffed her shorts and Stosur has polishe her glasses. Daniela Hantuchova on the other hand has had a tough time coming back after her depressing break. "I loved this tour and life was so great, but then it ended. I have never seen so many angry/sad/concerned players." After the break sign ups for the Hard court season commence and the Slovak booked her tickets and entered her doubles tournament with Henin.

Daniela's first stop in the WSC Hard court schedule is Los Angeles. The East West Bank Classic will host intense women's tennis. Daniela is the fouth seed. "Bieng seeded brings load of challenges and pressures you to win, but it givbes a drive to prove yourself which helps your tennis." In the first round she will face Serena Williams, the Wimbledon champ... In doubles. Daniela is quite excited to get back on court and go back to her winning ways, which has given her 5 titles on three different surfaces. Daniela hopesto continue her sucess and make everyone proud.

The newcomer's quest for her first singles title is set to wait another week

Los Angeles, CALIFORNIA - Serbian sensation and World #12 Jelena Jankovic dropped her first match on hardcourts at the East West Bank Classic in Los Angeles to 3rd seed Samantha Stosur of Australia 6-2, 6-4. The first set saw Sam start out the match strongly befuddling Jelena with excellent serves and volleys to take the set in just 22 minutes 6-2. Jelena said, "She started the match so well and with so much energy. It was important for me to hold serve because I knew it would be tough for me to break no matter how good my return is."

The second set saw a more competitive match with Jelena going up a break 3-2. However, the resilient Stosur wouldn't cave in breaking right back and then breaking again in the final game of the match finishing it with a solid forehand approach. Jelena said, "She is definitely underrated from the baseline. She has a really good aggressive, attacking game so I was always on my heels throughout the whole match." The Serb had nothing but praise for the Aussie by the end. "I think I forgot how good Stosur is on the hardcourts. She won Indian Wells, the first tournament of the WSC. I remember beating her earlier this season but it was on my favorite surface. I guess now it is time for her revenge."

On her hopes of possibly taking home a title and getting to the Top 8 before the US Open, the Serb remains optimistic. "I still have a good chance to do so I'd like to think. Hard is my second favorite surface and I just ran into a steaming hot opponent today. Hopefully I'll be able to recover well for the next tournament."

Each player owns 1 of the 2 hard court titles given away earlier this year, with Maria taking the Nordea Championships (Tier II). It will be the clash of the hard court champions in the finals of the East West Bank Classic.
