On May 13 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/May_13), 2000 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2000), a fireworks (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fireworks) storage in Enschede exploded, destroying an entire neighborhood (Roombeek) and killing 22 people, including 4 firemen. This catastrophe is known in the Netherlands (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Netherlands) as the Vuurwerkramp (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Vuurwerkramp), Dutch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dutch_language) for fireworks disaster.
In 2001 a referendum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Referendum) confirmed the proposal of the city council to expand the built-up area into the Usseler Es (http://en.wikipedia.org/w/index.php?title=Usseler_Es&action=edit), an area of some historic (agri-)cultural importance.
