Sharapova Wins Thriller on Day 1

Paris, France - Maria Sharapova have survived on day one of competition at Roland Garros on her quest for a grand slam title. She had to face Chinese, Shuai Peng. Sharapova came in to be the favourite, being the number 11 seed, and she showed why when she came out winning the first 3 games of the match. At one point in the third game, she pulled a muscle in her right shoulder and at the changeover, she got treatment. This obviously affected her game, losing the next four games being broken twice with the help of Sharapova's 4 double faults in two games. Sharapova showed her fighting skills and broke back straight away. The next 2 games would also be breaks of serve before Sharapova turned this around and held her serve for the first time since she got the injury timeout. She led 6-5 and had 2 set points at 15-40 on Shuai's serve but the Chinese saved them with 2 big serves. She brought it back to 6-6 for a tiebreak, which Peng won 7-4.

After another injury timeout at the changeover, Sharapova came out a bit stronger in the second set. The first 3 games were breaks of serve before Sharapova once again broke that jinx by holding serve to lead 3-1. Sharapova extended this lead by breaking Peng's serve to love and holding hers to love. She had 2 set points again at 5-1 but Peng, once again showed her fighting skills and saved them with 2 big serves. Sharapova however got pumped up by this and held her serve to love to win the set 6-2.

The final set saw both girls looking like they're fighting for their lifes. Once again the set started with breaks of serve, this time only 2. And then Peng held her serve and led 2-1. Sharapova looked a little bit relieved and she played brilliantly in the next game, coming back from 0-40 down to win 5 points in a row, to level the match back up at 2-2. Another two breaks of serve in the next two games and another two holds of serve and it followed this tradition throughout the set until 6-6. But in the third set there was no tiebreaks and they have to win by two games. Sharapova made the first move by breaking Peng's serve to 15 and was up 40-0 on her own serve before Peng did another fight back and got it back to deuce. Sharapova served an ace and set up another match point. And this time she gets it with an unretturnable serve on her fourth match point to avoid the upset. The were 7 upsets in round 1 and both world number 1 and number 2 are out.

Sharapova goes 3-0 on day 3

Paris, France - Maria Sharapova played AMAZING tennis on day 3 going 3-0 on all her 3 matches. First up was her doubles match with Amelie Mauresmo. It was their first time on court together, and they came out a little late against Sania Mirza and Nathalie Dechy. They lost the first set 6-0 and was down 3-0 in the second set. But they turned things around from there. They won the next 6 of 7 games and took the second set 6-4. The final set was a thriller. They got the audience on their feet and at the edge of their seats. But Sharapova and Mauresmo was the stronger of the two teams and they were down 5-4, 6-5, 8-7 before they won on their 6th match point at 9-8. This was the longest match of the day. Sania Mirza and Nathalie Dechy couldn't convert on their 8 match points.

Next up was the singles match for Maria, where she was up against Dominika Cibulkova. She was a little worn out from her doubles match as she trailled 5-2 in the first set before winning 4 games in a row to lead 6-5 for the first time in the match. Cibulkova had enough to take it to a tiebreak but Sharapova fought her way to a 7-5 win in the tiebreak. Once again, Sharapova was down in the second set, this time 5-1 and once again she brought it back to 5-5. Cibulkova held her serve to lead 6-5 and Sharapova also held her serve to take it to the tiebreak. Sharapova who has already spent 4 hours on the court today, was out for a short affair and showed her dominance and won the tiebreak and the match 7-0. Sharapova would haev to face number 4 seed Iveta Benesova tomorrow.

Last but not least was her mixed doubles match with good friend, Andy Roddick. They were up against Elena Dementieva and Janko Tipsarevic. After trailing 1-4 in the first set, Sharapova and Roddick took the next 6 games and won the set 6-4 and led the second 1-0. All held serve in the second set for 11 games. Sharapova and Roddick led 6-5 before there was a break of serve. Sharapova and Roddick attacked the weak serve of Elena Dementieva and they won the set and match 7-5. Sharapova left the court in relief after spending 6 hours and 48 minutes on court for today. And the day after, she would have to play another 3 matches.

-Another seeded team goes away and the chance for the dream QF between the russians and the number ones goes away. The first set was all Russia as Kirilenko served well and Veras touch was delicious. unfourtunatly late in the second an injury time out took out Russias chancves to win. Dinara steeped up her power and presision in the third and with Flavia leading the way threy won in three.-

-I wouldnt call this a MAJOR upset mainly because Alona and Linds are about the tenth best team in the world. This match was all about the net and the best volley-ers won the match. Shahar lacked net coverage and it cost the the match.-

-The dream continues for the first ever world number ones. Ju's backhand has never been this sharp and Aga can return anything bieng thrown at her. Paola and Pitu deserve to go through but were un lucky to face this red hot team.-

Mixed Emotions For Sharapova

Paris, France - It was mixed emotions for Sharapova on day 4 of competition. After having a perfect 3-0 record on day 3, Sharapova would have to play another 3 matches today and started out with the mixed doubles competition with Andy Roddick and they faced Maria Sanchez Lorenzo and Jarkko Nieminen. After more than 6 hours on the court yesterday, Sharapova showed signs of exhaustion. They lost the first set 6-1. They were also down 4-1 in the second set but showed their great partnership to come back and win the second set 7-5. The third set was a battle but after the draining second set, Sharapova couldn't hold on and they lost the set and the match 6-4. After this lost, Sharapova was ini doubt for the doubles competition to focus on her singles but she decided not to for the sake of Amelie Mauresmo.

They came on court about 2 hours later and needed to score an upset over number 8 seeds, Tatjana Malek and Kim Clijsters. And after being 3-1 down in the first set, they never looked back and took 11 straight games. They won 6-3 6-0 and was only on court for 1 hour and 10 minutes. Sharapova was relieved that she was out for a shorter affair and now can focus on her singles.

She was up against Iveta Benesova, who is the number 4 seed and was the second highest seed remaining. She was ready for another upset and another short affair, and she started well going up 4-1, but Benesova showed why she is the number 4 seed and brought it back to 4-3. But it was a little too late as Sharapova won that set 6-4. The second set was a tight affair and they each held serve on the first 4 games. Benesova broke Sharapova first to lead 3-2 but Sharapova broke back straight away. Benesova broke again and Sharapova once again broke back straight away. 4-4 and Sharapova held her serve after a long game, saving 7 break points. In the next game, Benesova went up 40-15 but Sharapova fought back to bring it back to deuce and with the help of Benesova's double fault, Sharapova had her first match point and converted winning in straight sets, with a backhand return winner.
