Wimbledon Preview

In the first and last junior Grand Slam at Roland Garros, #1 seeded Pamela Montez came in as the favorite and lived up to that name taking the win in Paris. However, a lot has changed since then. Amandine Hesse is now holding up the #1 ranking and there are lots of newcomers who are seeking Grand Slam glory. Will Amandine justify her #1 ranking? Will Pamela win her second straight Grand Slam title? Andrew is here to give his views and opinions on the draw. :bounce: Who will get his kiss of death?

Favorites

Amandine Hesse - She's the obvious pick for the title. She had a disappointing Roland Garros falling in the first round but since then she has picked up her tennis. She lost in the finals of Spain, regrouped and won in France, and lost to eventual champion Palyvuchenkova on the grass in Halle semifinals. With this, she has regained the #1 ranking. However, she has a very tough draw. She's already in the quarterfinals on virtue of a bye in the first round but may have to go up against her Halle conqueror Anastasia Palyvuchenkova in the quarters and possibly aggressive baseliner Michelle Larcher de Brito in the semis. I'm not liking her chances.

Anastasia Palyvuchenkova - The talented Russian's tennis is finally starting to come together. In her first tournaments, she was often very unlucky losing in the qualifying. But I knew she has talent and after she finally got over the first hump by qualifying, she stormed to the title crushing #3 seed Larcher de Brito, World #1 Hesse and World #4 and red-hot Hofmanova for the title. She is my own personal pick for the title.

Nikola Hofmanova - The talented Austrian is also picking up her tennis and is peaking at the right moment. She struggled in the early part of the year but has picked it up in the previous two tournaments. After an early round loss to Babos in France, she became fed up and trained and practiced even harder. The hard work payed off as she made the finals in Slovakia and Halle. She's an outside pick for the title to me but my only worry is that she will choke. She has yet to win a set when reaching the finals. Maybe this is the event to break through.

Darkhorse

Kristina Kucova - She is certainly disappointed that she missed the cut in seeding but as an unseeded player she is a huge threat for the title. In her debut tournaments, she has made the semifinals and won in her home country Slovakia. However, she hasn't played a grass event. Will it hinder her strong progress?

Sleepers

Pamela Montez - She's now at #2 in the world. After winning her first Grand Slam at Roland Garros, her tennis has suffered. Since then, she has went 1-4 with a win over Urszula Radwanska (someone who is suffering worse). However, she is still #2 in the world and holds 3 titles including a Grand Slam title. That just might be enough to get her to the semifinals at least.

Michelle Larcher de Brito - She had a brilliant season as of late but has struggled in the two tournaments. She continued her great success on clay winning a tournament in Spain after upsetting Hesse to make the Roland Garros final. However, on the faster surfaces so far she has suffered two straight set losses(hard, grass). She is in the safest quarter of the draw and semifinals is definitely not out of the question yet.

Kristina Mladenovic - The talented Frenchie has turned heads with her crafty and beautiful shot-making on the court. She has very consistent this year. However, will she just stay on the line of "consistent" for the rest of year. When will she cross the line and win her first title? She's been overdue for at least one for awhile now. Wimbledon would be the best place to do so.

Urszula Radwanska - The talented Pole has been struggling as of late and is still looking for that "breakthrough" to put herself on the map. She's been 1-5 since Roland Garros including a shock loss to Babos in the first round of Paris. With Kucova awaiting her in the first round, it doesn't look like her luck will get any better.

Glusko Grinds Past Henin

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/cry.jpg
Justine Henin of the ATT professional tour, cries in her towel after a recieving a double bagel beatdown from new junior player, Julia Glushko

In a pre-Wimbledon exhibition match that was that on a spurr of the moment on the eve of Wimbledon beginning for the Junior ATT girls, newcomer Julia Glushko of Israel stunned so-called professional player, Justine Henin. Henin who had a poor result in Wimbledon, getting knocked out in the first round and she has now been reduced to playing in the off-brand of Wimbledon, Dumbledon. Glushko got her victory over Henin in embarrassing straight sets; 6-0, 6-0.

"You know Justine's career is probably on the rocks right now but I definitely think I played a lot better than her and I think my game is well suited for the grass. I have a good serve and I've never seen Nikola [Hofmanova] play but I'm not scared. She can try to put up a fight, I'll just beat her like I did Justine."

Glushko is the first Israeli player on the junior tour, she said it's a great honor for her to play for her country and hopefully she'll be able to make them proud. As for her time spent on the tour, Glushko had this to say:

"This tour is pretty quiet, I'm hope these girls are ready for the noise I'm about to make on tour." Glushko said in an interview after the main draw had been announced.

What a match! :worship: The newcomer came into this match with no fear and almost took the Halle champion and my pick for the title down. If anyone noticed, there is an asterisk next to the first set score ... Had Alexandra won that coin toss, she would've won that set and obviously the match. For a newcomer, it's a strong strategy and she shouldn't be discouraged. ;) Keep the strategy, I'd like to see it against some of the other players. :D And Anastasia scrapes through setting up a match against Amandine.

And there is the first upset of Wimbledon! And it doesn't come as a huge shock for me, as one of our "sleepers" is living up to their name. :o However, all credit goes to the young Serb. [4]Hofmanova def. Glushko 3-6, 7-6[3], 6-2

And another strong performance from the newcomer! :worship: It seems that they really want to make their mark on the Juniors tour. ;) Julia started just with no fear taking the first 6-3 and even had a lead of 5-3 but only then did she start to realize the moment. :awww: Maybe Nikola pre-Roland Garros would've lost the match but not the new and improved one. She continued to fight and kept digging and ended up winning the second set. :worship: After that, she rolled through the decider dictating play over the then-tired Glushko. Likewise Alex, Julia shouldn't be discouraged. ;) Keep this strategy for a few more weeks and test it against other players. ;)

Kucova def. [6]Radwanska 6-1, 4-6, 6-0

This may have looked like an upset due to the seedings, but not in my book. ;) Kristina is coming in HOT form as well. In 2 tournaments, she has made it to the semifinals at the LEAST. :worship: She is looking to do so again here but will have to go through the also hot 4th seeded Nikola Hofmanova. It should be a good match like there finale match in Slovakia. :yeah: Urszula :o You promised new points awhile ago. You will have to be a little bit more committed or a slide down the rankings is definitely not out of the question. :help:

[7]Babos def. Salut 1-6, 6-3, 7-5

And Timea lives up to her seeding! :worship: :yeah: Typical Timea to tank one of her sets though. :haha: Timea may have bad results during the year but she has been clutch in the Grand Slams. :haha: SF in Roland Garros and now QF so far here at Wimbledon. Who knows? Pam isn't in the greatest form so an upset possibly could happen. Aranza, btw I think you are missing two strokes so you lost those two games in whatever set and it did cost you a bit. Edit that for your next tournament. ;)

So far this draw is looking X100 better than Roland Garros. :haha:

The seeds living up to their seeds only two upsets so far. :yeah: And they are two of the sleepers. :o All of the favorites and darkhorse is still in the competition. :D

What a way to start our quarterfinals matches! :worship: Like in their last match, this match went down to the wire and Nastya at the end was just that little bit better. Also like their last match, Nastya was luckier while Amandine won the insignificant cointosses. For me, it didn’t change the outcome of this match because Amandine still has a patch in her strokes where it needs work but hasn’t changed since the first tournament and it cost her that third set. :o Nastya deserves all credit though, holding her nerve and playing brilliant tennis to reach her second consecutive semifinal. :yeah: She has survived my kiss of death well.

And the young Serb is in the semifinals of Wimbledon! :worship: Prior to this tournament, Bojana was losing matches in qualifying and only last tournament was she able to qualify for the MD. She is still relatively new so she has still a lot of tournament to grow and come into her own. Since Spain, Michelle has been struggling mightily and is in a bit of a slump right now. She seems to want to get back to the slower surfaces as soon as possible. In the semifinals, Bojana will face 8th seeded Anastasia Palyvuchenkova.

With the Hesse vs. Palyvuchenkova match, this was definitely the match to watch for. It was high quality from start to finish. I’m really impressed with the way Kristina is playing. From start to finish, you saw her focus and drive and her groundstrokes were solid like a rock. :worship: Nikola did well to make this a match but really Kristina knew she was the winner as soon as she got on the court. Now she is in her third consecutive semifinal and will face the winner of Babos or Montez. Don’t be discouraged, Nikola. ;) It was a very tough draw for you and you were very unlucky today. Had you won the important CT at 5-5, you would’ve taken this to a third set.

OMG. :speakles: Timea is in her second consecutive Grand Slam semifinal. :speakles: And she does it in brilliant fashion. The thing about this is that Pam didn’t play that badly. :speakles: She certainly didn’t live up to her “sleeper” description but she had chances in this match to take it but “choked” if you’d like to call it that. :awww:  However, all credit to Timea who played inspiring tennis, never giving up and now she is back in the semifinals and will face red-hot Kristina Kucova for a spot in the final. :worship: Huge opportunity for Pamela Montez to win her second straight Grand Slam missed here.

Definitely one of the biggest surprises of the year! :worship: Nastya came into this match with as the HUGE favorite but she choked at the prospect of being in a Grand Slam final. Plus, she has played much more tennis winning the title at Halle and is in the semifinals here which should be an advantage. It turned out to hurt her as she was the more fatigued player having very tough three set wins over Filipnovski and 1st seeded Hesse in the previous two rounds. Bojana is playing inspiring tennis right now and is now in her first Grand Slam final. :worship:

Wow. :speakles: I was expecting a tough match because both players have such similar strategies but I DEFINITELY wasn’t expecting it to end like this. :speakles: Again this doesn't look like an upset on stats, but in my book this is a huge upset. :speakles: Timea deserves this because she has received crap from the game runner since the beginning. But finally she sends in a good tactic and it gets her to her first Grand Slam final. We will have a first time titlist and first time Grand Slam champion. Kristina  There’s still the US Open. :awww: Good tournament nonetheless.

road to finale

QF def. [2]Montez 3-6, 7-5, 6-4
SF def. Kucova 3-6, 6-2, 6-3

And the unexpected Wimbledon final is set! On one side of the net, we have the young Serb Bojana Jovanovski. She has struggled prior to Wimbledon losing in qualifying in most of her tournaments. It wasn't until last week when she qualified for her first MD tournament but lost to Kristina Mladenovic in the first round. However, she has come to the All-England Club determined as ever upsetting 5th seeded Mladenovic in straights, and then upsetting 3rd seeded Larcher de Brito in the quarterfinals. However, her biggest win came over tournament pick 8th seeded Palyvuchenkova in the semifinals. On the other side of the net, we have 7th seeded Timea Babos. I had no expectations coming in for her but she has surprised everyone. In the first round, she defeated tough Salut. In the quarterfinals, she defeated 2nd seeded and Roland Garros champion Montez in three grueling sets. In the semifinals, she had another impressive win over ever-improving Kucova in three tight sets as well. So who's going to win the title? For me, Timea's run has been more impressive as she had to beat better players though you can make the argument that Bojana's run has been better as she had never won any MD matches prior to this. Stay tuned and live scoring will be posted tomorrow!

GAME, SET, CHAMPIONSHIP [7]TIMEA BABOS
6-2, 1-6, 6-4

And that brings an end to a very surprising Wimbledon! :worship: In the first set, it seemed like Bojana started well holding serve through 2-2 but from that point on Timea brought her game to another notch taking the set 6-2. :yeah: Bojana again started the better player in the second set but this time she never looked back. Using a big serve and forehand reminiscent to compatriot and World #4 Ana Ivanovic, she dictated play sticking Timea to the back of the court. :worship: Timea didn't make the same mistake in the third taking the early lead and never looked back. Credit to Bojana who continued to make it a match but at the end, it was Timea's time to shine. :awww: With this win, the 7th seeded Hungarian wins her first title and Grand Slam title. She should take a leap in the rankings and should be getting a Wildcard into a pro tournament. :worship: Also well done to Bojana for a great tournament, coming out of nowhere to upset some of the best players on tour. She also will have a good leap in the rankings and will be one to look out for in the future. ;) :worship:

You should try out some new strategies. ;) Right now, you have such a huge lead at #1 & right now your competitors are sort of struggling as well. ;) So just give it a go! I'm excited for the next tournament which could start in a few days, maybe sooner.
