Cremona is a city (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/City) in northern Italy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Italy), situated in Lombardy (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lombardy), on the left shore of the Po (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Po) river in the middle of the Pianura padana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Po) (Po valley). It is the capital of the province of Cremona (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Province_of_Cremona)
Cremona is first mentioned in history as a settlement of the Cenomani (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cenomani), a Gallic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallic)(Celtic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Celt)) tribe that arrived in the Po (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Po) valley around 400 BC. However, the name Cremona was given (most probably) by earlier settlers. In 218 BC (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/218_BC) the Romans (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ancient_Rome) established there their first military outpost (a colonia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Colonia)) north of the Po river. Cremona and nearby Placentia (modern Piacenza (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Piacenza), south of the Po), were founded in the same year, as bases for penetration into what became the Roman Province (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Province) of Gallia Cisalpina (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gallia_Cisalpina) (Cisalpine Gaul (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cisalpine_Gaul)). Cremona quickly grew into one of the largest towns in northern Italy, as it was on the main road connecting Genoa (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Genoa) to Aquileia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Aquileia), the Via Postumia (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Via_Postumia). It supplied troops to Julius Caesar (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Julius_Caesar) and benefited from his rule, but later supported Marcus Iunius Brutus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marcus_Iunius_Brutus) and the Senate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Roman_Senate) in their conflict with Augustus (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Augustus), who, having won, in 40 BC confiscated Cremona's land and redistributed it to his men. The famous poet Virgil (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Virgil), who went to school in Cremona, had to forfeit his ancestral farm ("too close to wretched Cremona"), but later regained it

Damascus (Arabic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_language): دمشق, transliteration (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Romanization_of_Arabic): Dimashq, also commonly known as الشام ash-Shām) is the capital and largest city of Syria (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Syria). It is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in the world (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_oldest_continuously_inhabited_cities) (see section: Ancient history (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Damascus#Ancient_history)), before Al Fayyum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Al_Fayyum), and Gaziantep (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gaziantep). Its current population is estimated at about 1.67 million. The city is a governorate (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Governorate) by itself, and the capital of the governorate of Rif Dimashq (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rif_Dimashq) (Rural Damascus
In Arabic (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Arabic_language), the city is called دمشق الشام Dimashq ash-Shām. Although this is often shortened to either Dimashq or ash-Shām by many, the citizens of Damascus, and of Syria and some other Arab neighbors, colloquially call the city ash-Shām. Ash-Shām is an Arabic term for north (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/North) and for Syria
Damascus lies about 80 km (50 mi) inland from the Mediterranean Sea (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mediterranean_Sea), sheltered by the Anti-Lebanon (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anti-Lebanon) Mountains. It lies on a plateau 680 metres (2,200 ft) above sea-level.
