Patch Jun 22nd, 2008, 03:32 PM Preview
Hungarian Agnes Szavay has a tough opening match again Austria, who may be a new team on tour but their coach took another team to the finals of this event last year so they could spring a few surprise here. The winners face Australia, who will be looking to pick thier season up.
*
*
*
The confident Serena Williams takes on the Wimbledon Finalists Thailand. Despite having Grand Slam experiance, Tanasugarn may find herslef under pressure from the Ameircan team, after thier fine run to the semis last week. Winners play South Africam who are 1-3 this year on Win Loss.
*
*
*
The second quarter looks the hardest and a potential block buster second round is in order against Auckland Champs and fifth seeds France and Hobart champs Russia. Switzerlands Martina Hingis will be stop this when she plays Maria Sharapova in round 1.
*
*
*
China, formerly Taipei, had a great run making the semis last week, taking down Australia en route and could be a dark horse in this tournament. But if Jie Zheng gets past Gisela Dulko, she will be up against it when playing the consistent third seed, Aga Radwanska.
*
*
*
The thrid quarter is by far the most open and both Flavia Pennetta and Karolina Sprem will know they have a good chance of making a grand slam QF for the first time as the winner of their first round match will play Zuzana Ondarksova in the second, who is yet to win a match this season.
*
*
*
Eight seeds Israel are proboly the favourites to make it to the quarters in their mini section, but with teams such as consitent GS performers Germany and Spain, with some solid wins undrer their belt, it will be foar form easy for Shahar Peer.
*
*
*
Last Grand Slam, it was Slovakia who made one of the most impressive runs, getting all the way to the final. A quarter final is not impossible with Daniela Hantuchovas draw, with two inexperaicned teams Slovakia and Denamrk, along with the Swedes who dont like this surface, thier early opponents.
*
*
*
Both Great Britian and Slovenia are still looking for the first win this year but one team will have one by the end of this tournament. But they will struggle to get two, as the winner of the first round encounter will have to play, Aiko Nakamura, the favourite for the title.

Uranium Jun 22nd, 2008, 09:52 PM USA Looking To Go Deep Down Under
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/06v3cTk8Cqfb3/610x.jpg
Melbourne, Australia
USA is coming into the Australian Open with a lot of confidence from Venus Williams winning Doha and Lindsay Davenport making the semifinals of Sydney with only 50 points. Serena Williams will be looking to have a successful start to the second season, as this week she will be playing for the first time here in Melbourne. Serena is playing amongst the elite to try to capture the Australian Open Title. Serena has a favorable draw to go deep, she has Tamarine Tanasugarn in the first round and then 6th seeded South Africa in the second round, in which Serena comes in the heavy favorite.
"I have a nice draw, but I don't want to put too much pressure on myself to do extremely well, I just wanna take it one match at a time. I should get through my first round against Thailand, I am confident."
In her Quarter is also Australia's Alicia Molik and Austria's Barbara Schett.
"If I get that far, either team would be really tough for me to take down, but I hope I can get through my section and do well for my team this week. I want to try to test myself and try new things in my first few rounds and try to improve."
Also competing for Team USA this week are Lisa Raymond in doubles, she is expected to play with Team Israel.
"We expect to play with Israel since we have done well lately together and are close teams, but if we don't team up this week I will try to get a new partner and work hard with them this week, so we can win some matches here in Australia."
In Mixed Doubles, Venus Williams will be looking to continue her undefeated streak this season by competing with Justin Gimelstob.
"I look forward to playing with Justin, we are great friends and talk to each other often and have practiced together a lot, so we know each other's games and have good tennis chemistry."
USA will be looking to try to win all three events this week, but USA's eyes are set on winning the Singles and Mixed events.

young_gunner913 Jun 23rd, 2008, 07:30 AM Update on Obziler
After having to retire from her match due to injury last week in Sydney, Tzipora Obziler was unsure if she would be able to play in women's doubles as she was scheduled to. After a quick visit to the hospital to get her knee checked out, Obziler walked out of the hospital with some crutches and suprisingly a smile.
"I'm happy to say that I will be able to play at the Australian Open and I'm looking forward to playing with Lisa [Raymond] from Team United States." Obziler said before her car came and got her.
Team Israel's head coach, Coach Spice scheduled a short press conference so he can name his complete roster for Israel at the Australian Open. For the first time at a grand slam, Israel will be seeded 8th.
"I am proud to announce our Australian Open roster as:
Singles: Shahar Peer
Doubles: Tzipora Obziler (parterning w/ Lisa Raymond)
Mixed Doubles: Anna Smashnova / Andy Ram
I have much faith in all members in my team. I wish them all the best of luck and hopefully we can get some more good results. There's a lot of points to be won and we're hoping to score big."

First Meeting
This is one of the better first rounds of the Australian Open, as Serena Williams will take on Tamarine Tanasugarn of Thailand. Serena goes in the heavy favorite this week for this match as Tamarine is 0-2 this year so far, and USA is on a high after making the SFs last week.
Serena will be coming into this match playing her first match of the season and will look to try to give USA the win in the first Slam of the Year. Serena is going to try to be aggressive and take advantage of Tamarine's low confidence at the start of the season.
"My team has been playing great tennis since Doha and I hope to continue that form for us. Tamarine hasn't played well this year, so I feel that this is my match to win or my match to lose, but I can't see myself losing this match."
Serena will be looking to go deep this week with her weak draw and try to get USA the farthest they've gone in a slam.
"The USO wasn't a good slam for USA in singles, Venus lost early, so I hope to get us much needed points here and try to win this event for my country."
Serena is expected to get past Tamarine in 2 easy sets.
The winner of this match will take on 6th seeded South Africa for a spot in the Quarterfinals.
USA is the heavy favorite to make it through their draw to the Quarterfinals to play Australia or Austria.

She doesn´t come well
Australia Open. The Argentina Gisela Dulko comes to this Australian Open very complicated. Your level not this one to 100 %, has an injury in her left leg but she doesn´t want to be absent to the appointment.
The Argentine one she was hitting in in the first round and a good performance isn´t thinking about coming to the Taiwanese .

Gisela speaks to us on her next match
Gisela Dulko: I've played her a few times. I know hard is probably her favorite surface. I'm going to have to be aggressive, keep the points short. Like she doesn't have a huge serve. She moves well. I think her backhand might be a little bit better. I think pace of shot might be coming the serve might be coming a little slower than I was receiving today. Hopefully that will give me some opportunities and some good looks.
Uranium Jun 26th, 2008, 03:45 PM US Ready To Conquer Australia
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/07RraFWgsGdeF/610x.jpg
Melbourne, Australia
With just one day left before the start of the first slam of the season, the U.S. team hit the practice courts for the last time. Venus, Serena and Lisa, all of whom will be playing for USA this week, hit the practice courts together to get each other prepared for the rough road ahead of them this week.
Serena Williams has Tamarine Tanasugarn in the first round and is expected to ease past her. In the second round, waiting for the winner of USA/Thailand is 6th seeded South Africa.
"You never want to underestimate your opponents. I am just going to worry about Tamarine for now. It's our first meeting and I want to win this match, not only for me, but for my country. I would love to win the whole Australian Open for my country."
Playing doubles for USA, is Lisa Raymond with Tzipi Obziler of Israel. Lindsay Davenport was suppose to play, according to plans at the start of the season, but her knee injury that hindered her chances of winning Sydney will make her be sidelined until the grass season. Lisa and Tzipi go in as one of the favorites to win the tournament.
"I think we can win, we had some bad luck last week, as we lost early because of Lindsay's injury, but I think we can do well here now that we are aware of each other's games."
Venus Williams will play the mixed with Justin Gimelstob.
USA will be seeking to do well in each event and improve their rankings greatly and try to make the top 10 for the first time.
