Serena Cruises Past China to Make First Slam Final
http://media.msnbc.com/j/msnbc/Components/Photos/070124/070124_williams_vmed_9p.widec.jpg
Melbourne, Australia
Today, Serena Williams found her way past China's Jie Zheng to place USA into their first Grand Slam Final. Serena will take on Shahar Peer of Israel in the final.
In set 1, both Serena and Jie were trying to find a game plan to use against the other, and tried to feel each other's game out. Both players couldn't keep a lead, as once one got the break, they would then get broken and the first set was tight and full of nerves as both tried to make their first final of a slam. Serena, at 4-4, held serve with ease as she used her serve angles and her opponent's short reach to her advantage and to get quick easy points. At 4-5, Zheng served a double fault and Serena stayed inside the baseline to return both first and second serves and to great use as she got the easy break with return winners.
The early stages of the second set were similar to the first set, as neither player could keep much of a lead, until 2-3, Serena got the early break of Jie's serve with 4 consecutive backhand winners. Zheng didn't stop fighting though as she kept trying to run down every shot from Serena, which worked as Serena went into error mode and Zheng took full advantage as she leveled the match to 4-4. From then on, both players concentrated on holding serve and it worked as the match went to a tiebreak. In the tiebreak, it was all Serena as she pounded past Zheng with constantly having Zheng on the run, and getting short replies to then put away easily. Serena won every point in the tiebreak to win it 7-0.
Serena finds herself into the final to take on Israel's Shahar Peer. These teams are good friends and are doubles partners this week.
"I played a great match today, but so did she. We were both at our best, but I was a bit better and got the win. Shahar is tough, but my team has beaten Israel already in a final this year and plan to do it again."
In doubles QF, Lisa Raymond and Tzipi Obziler took down heavy favorites to win the Title, Medina Garrigues and Martina Hingis. USA/Israel won the match 4-6 6-4 7-6(2).
"It was a tough match for us. We trailed most of the match, mainly the third set, we were down 5-3 and match points, but we didn't stop fighting and were able to hit great volley winners to keep us in the match. We stayed focused and were able to prevail. We play Keothavong/Larsson next, hopefully we can beat them."

Nakamura stunned in Australian semifinal

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/3271/aiko42.jpg
Second seed Aiko Nakamura looks on, but is unable to defeat Shahar Peer of Israel

Heading into the Australian Open, Japan were heavy favourites to win the title and claim their second Grand Slam singles title, following on from Ai Sugiyama's victory on the grass of Wimbledon last year. However, an inspired Shahar Peer managed to find a way past Aiko Nakamura 7-6 7-5, with the Japanese player at a loss to explain what happened.

MODERATOR: Questions for Miss Nakamura, please.

REPORTER: Aiko, how does it feel to lose on this surface for the first time?
NAKAMURA: Umm, yeah, I don't know. It's tough. Very tough. My coach had high expectations for me and so did I. I knew I was playing well, but it just didn't click.

R: Did Shahar surprise you how she played?
AN: Yeah, I guess so, but it's not like I think I'm a superior player to her. The Israeli team is tough and Akiko lost to Smashnova in Doha on grass, so I don't think that our style of play matches up well against them. I don't think I helped myself out there today though.

R: What do you mean by that?
AN: Too many errors, quite simply. She didn't make the errors and I did. That was the main reason.

R: You took a long pause between the first and second set, was their any reason why you did that?
AN: I just needed to clear my head, get off court and focus. It was the first time I lost the first set and she kind of shocked me. I think she put in a lot of work ready for this match whereas I just went with the same tactic that I used for Daniela and Katarina. But yeah, I just needed to go off and try to forget the first set and get on with the second.

R: Towards the end of the second set, you appeared to be struggling moving.
AN: Yes I was.

R: Did you feel as if you were cramping up? You didn't appear to be cramping in the match?
AN: I don't think it was cramp, but in my doubles match earlier which was very tough I slightly pulled my right calf and I struggled a bit then, so I put some ice on it and just hoped for the best. I'm going to see the trainer later and get some strapping for it for my doubles match tomorrow.

R: If you were 100% fit, do you think you could have won?
AN: That's the thing about sports - you never what will happen. Even if I was 100% fit I could have lost. I really have no idea why I played poorly. All credit to Shahar though, she played a smart match and knew when to press on and win.

R: Finally, who do you think will win in the final?
AN: I would prefer to see Shahar win - it's always a nice feeling to lose to the eventual winner - but I'm sure both girls will play their best to take their first Slam title.

Shahar Peer Pressure

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/gs.jpg
Shahar Peer of Team Israel reacts after defeating Aiko Nakamura of Team Japan to advance to the finals of the Australian Open.

After a weak showing on their worst surface, the rebound ace courts, Shahar Peer found her game and has made a dominate showing at the Australian Open. In her semi-final match against second-seeded Aiko Nakamura of Team Japan, the eigth-seeded Israeli stunned all by sending the tournament favorites crashing out in straight sets; 7-5, 7-6(3). This would be the biggest win in Peer's career, her first final and her team's first grand slam final.

I: How do you feel right now?
SP: I feel so amazing right now! I'm so excited to be in the finals of a grand slam, it's been an amazing expierence and I'm just really happy. I can't describe it. [Laughs]

I: You we're very agressive in this match, was that you're plan the whole time?
SP: Yes, of course. Aiko is a very strong player and she can just steam roll you if you give her an inch, so I didn't.

I: You face Serena Williams in the finals. How do you feel about that?
SP: I'm a little nervous to be honest but I've got nothing to loose, this is my worst surface and I'm in the finals. I'm happy with how far I've gotten.

I: Do you think you're going to win?
SP: Of course.

I: Why?
SP: I've got to believe in myself. If I don't believe in myself, how can others believe in me?

I: Tzipora and Lisa won in doubles today, how has her health been lately?
SP: From what she tells me, she's feeling fine. She was very excited to get out onto the court and I think she's playing great. I'm very happy that she won today. It was like another good suprise for Team Israel.

I: Thank you very much for your time.
SP: Thanks.

I: Any closing comments?
SP: Only one of us can win, I'm aiming for it to be me.

USA are the Aussie Open Champions! They have worked so hard this surface to gear up to plekaing here and theyve done just that. Serena played a great match and deserves this win. Big Congrats to here. Shahar has had an unbelievable week though and I hope she isnt too dissapointed ebcause shes exceeded expectations and has the ability to become a future champion. But now, its the Americans time to shine.

Serena Is The Last One Standing in Melbourne
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/02hMbmI3U96t7/610x.jpg
Melbourne, Australia
When the tournament began, Serena Williams was regarded as one of the players to watch for, as France, Poland and Japan were considered the favorites. They couldn't handle the pressure as they all one by one fell to the task of winning this slam. Once the dust cleared in Melbourne, the true champion was left standing....Serena Williams.
In the final, Serena Williams took on Shahar Peer of Israel.
In set 1, Shahar Peer took control of the points early and made Serena move side to side. Serena's sluggish footwork caused her to hit many errors and to be down 4-0. Serena was finally able to get on the scoreboard after holding serve after a forehand volley winner. Shahar kept pushing Serena, as Shahar was running everything down, keeping the ball in the middle of the court and waiting for Serena errors, which worked and led her to take the first st 6-1. On set point, Serena hit a short second serve that Shahar jumped all over to hit a forehand return winner.
Set 2, Serena and Shahar exchanged breaks in the first 5 games as neither's serve was up to par and both ladies' returning abilitites shown to be great and able to break easily. Serena backed up the break at 3-2 with a hold, after hitting an ace, 2 forehand swinging volley winners and a missed attempt of a drop shot from Shahar. Shahar never stopped fighting though as she went back to the game plan that won her the first set, keeping the ball in the middle of the court. It payed off as Serena started to hit errors all over the court to level the match at 4-4. Shahar led 40-0 at 4-4, but Serena didn't give up as she clawed her way back to deuce with 3 consecutive backhand winners. Serena let out a huge "COME ON!!!" to pump herself up and it payed off as Serena then was able to break serve for 5-4. Serena kept her momentum as she held serve to love with 4 aces in a row to close out the set.
In set 3, once again the first 3 games were plagued with unforced errors and double faults as neither could hold serve. But at 2-1, Serena didn't want to let this opportunity to slip, so she took a bit off her first serve and added spin to make sure her first serve would go in and payed off for her as she was able to hold serve for a 3-1 lead after Shahar hit a forehand return error at 40-0. Shahar's serve once again let her down as she got broken, after serving 4 short second serves that Serena crushed all for return winners. Serena led 4-1, but Shahar kept fighting and was able to get the break back as she tried to force Serena to pass her as she went to the net, but instead Serena hit errors. It looked like Shahar would finally get back into the match, but Serena put that idea to rest as she just overpowered Shahar for the rest of the match easily with constant deep groundstrokes that troubled Shahar and Serena when given a short ball would take the opportunity to hit swinging volleys or drive volley winners. On match point at 5-2, Serena served up her 16th ace of the match and fell to the ground with happiness.
http://www.australianopen.com/images/pics/large/b_swilliams_0127_04.jpg
Serena would jump around the court with excitement as she became the first American to win a Grand Slam, and the first Grand Slam Champion of the Season. Serena would also pose for pictures and say a great winner's speech.
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0aRYgda0Xjg9g/340x.jpg
"Wow, all I can say is wow. First I would like to say congrats to Shahar, she put up a great fight out there and deserved to make the final this week. I am shocked to be standing up here with this trophy in my hands, I didn't expect to win. I came in here as one of the players to watch for and now leave with the title. I would also like to thank the tour director for running such a great tournament, and would like to thank the ball kids, umpires, line judges and FANS, for whom we couldn't have done this without. I would like to thank my parents, who trained us so well that now I am holding up this trophy, so thank you. I would also like to thank Jehovah. I would like to thank my coach who trained me well and did great scouting that led me to this title. I hope to come back next year and defend my title because I love Australia."

The USA have been the team of the Aussie Open this year and even the Spainards great fightback in the third was not enough to deny them. A well deserved GS title #2 for the Americans.
