Venus Ready For Fed Cup

http://i114.photobucket.com/albums/n253/TimmyBoy21/Venus.jpg
Venus Williams speaks at a press conference before the Semi-final Fed Cup ties. Williams is scheduled to play in both singles and doubles for the United States.

Within the first couple of weeks of the season, American Venus Williams won her first singles title and assumed the number one ranking in the world. Those days seem like a distant memory as the former tennis titan has been loosing the battle to overcome her recent slump. After numerous early round losses, Venus has fallen outside the top 10 and is currently ranked 14th.

Although her results have been far below her standards, Venus remains optimistic about the rest of the season and said she is certainly ready to play Fed Cup.

"I've been practicing a lot with Serena and my coach and I definitely am ready to go out there and play my best and hopefully get the win." Venus said at a press conference. "I have been in a slump lately and I think I'm ready to start gaining the confidence back to be the great player that I know I can be."

Day one action will future both Williams sisters in singles action, Serena will be playing the first singles tie against world number one, Margalita Chakhnashvili and Venus will play the second singles tie against Victoria Azarenka.

"I've played against Victoria a couple of times and I won so I'm feeling confident that I can keep up my good play against her and bring a win to my team."

Venus will also be teaming up with rookie player, Ashley Harkleroad to play in women's doubles against Victoria Azarenka and Edina Gallovits. Williams and Harkleroad have never played doubles previously and the choice was a shocking one made by newly crowned team captain Serena Williams.

The younger Williams sister overtook her big sister in the rankings and Fed Cup rules state the player ranked the highest of each team will be the captain. Venus claims change in positions hasn't caused any trouble between the sisters.

"Press: Has Serena tried to boss you around at all?

Venus: She knows better than that. [Laughs]"

American Dream!

http://i214.photobucket.com/albums/cc219/5e4n/tennis.jpg

The Semi-Final of the Fed Cup will kick off tomorrow, with favourites Russia taking on Slovakia and the USA battling it out with Eastern Europe. Team captains Serena and Chakhnashvili released their respective line-ups earlier this week. Which are as follows:

United States vs. Eastern Europe
1. S.Williams (capt.) vs vs. Chakhnashvili (capt.)
2. V.Williams vs. Azarenka
3. Davenport vs. Gallovits
4. Harkleroad vs. Chakhnashvili
5. V.Williams/Harkleroad vs. Azarenka/Gallovits

There were many raised eyebrow when Serena only opted to play one rubber along with Lindsay Davenport while allowing newcomer Ashley Harkleroad to play. The reason for Serena's surprising decision is yet unknown but she obviously sees something in Ashley that everyone else missed. We were lucky enough to get an exclusive interview with the surprised American:

Well I suppose congratulations are in order. Was it expected?
No not at all I was already on the plane to my next tournament when I got the call and had to turn round again as soon as I landed. There are so many good American players I didn't even expect to be a reserve. I still think maybe it was an accident.

Why do you think you were chosen?
No idea, ask Serena

Now that you have seen the draw how do you feel about facing Marge in singles?
Well I think it is a but unfair that their 1st racket is playing in the 4th rubber against the oppositions weakest player. But there are no rules against it so I just hope by that time USA has won the previous 3 rubbers so it doesn’t matter. She is ranked much higher than I am, and her game seems to suit mine well. But then I also have the advantage that she probably doesn't know that much about me

What will your tactics be?
Well I think I will just have to play my game. Really go for my shots and attack all out and hope something goes in. I doubt it will work but it's my only chance. I will aim to stay out there as long as possible and hopefully give the crowd an exiting match rather than a pummelling.

You will also play doubles with Venus Williams. How do you feel about that?
Wow that is so cool that I get to play with the legend that is Venus! She is a real inspiration to me and a lot of girls back home. I am glad I am playing with such an amazingly volleyed. My tactic will just be to stick her at the front of the net and hope she wins from there, while I cheer her on!

How does Fed Cup differ from each other tournament?
Oh it is totally different! The atmosphere is way more friendly, well in your camp anyway. Normally it is every girl for herself but now you have a team supporting each other and training together. That makes a big difference cheering on other team mates and socialising together. I am very aware though that all the girls in my team are a lot older than me and way more experienced so this is a great opportunity to learn some tricks of the trade!

Americans Favored On Day One

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/fedd.jpg
Assisant coach Corina Morariu, Team Captain Serena Williams, Lindsay Davenport and Venus Williams wave to their supporters as they carry the American flag around the court.

With day one of the Fed cup set to kick off today, the American team will be looking to start off with a hopeful 2-0 lead. The United States team will be playing their top two ranked players, Serena and Venus Williams against world number one, Margalita Chakhnashvili and youngster Victoria Azerenka.

Normally, the world's number one would not be seen as a push over, however Chakhnashvili hasn't wpn a match in the past 2 weeks and although Serena hasn't had great results, she remains optimistic about her chances.

"I think that I have a good chance to go out there and play some good tennis and get the win. She hasn't been at the top of her game and that's one of the best times to strike." Serena said at a press conference.

Venus, who was accompanying her sister at the press conference, will take on Azerenka who has never really caused her any problems in either of the matches they've played. Venus holds a 2-0 record against Victoria and has never lost a set against the young woman from Belarus.

"Definitely having a good record against her gives me some confidence." Venus said with a smile. "She's plays a pretty strong game but the times we've met, I played stronger. I'm expecting a good match and hopefully we can get the lead that we want."

Team U.S.A On Top

http://i115.photobucket.com/albums/n319/UHO_2006/Venus_Williams_Prb_W.jpg
Venus Williams returns a shot to Victoria Azerenka of Belarus in the second singles rubber on the first day of Fed Cup.

American sisters, Serena and Venus certainly delivered on day one of Fed Cup, both posting singles wins and putting the United States up 2-0 against Eastern Europe. In the first singles rubber, Team Captain, Serena Williams took on Eastern Europe's team captain and world number one, Margalita Chakhnashvili. Williams promptly won the match in straight sets; 6-1, 6-3.

"I played a really good match today. I went out there and just played my best and the results show." Serena said in a post match interview. "In the second set, she was up 3-2 and I was thinking to myself, I need to pick it up."

And Serena did. She played fantastic tennis and won the next four consecutive games to take the match. The American team captain ended the match with 24 winners to 10 enforced errors compared to the 8 winners to 17 unforced errors of Chakhnashvili.

In the second singles rubber, Fed Cup veteran Venus Williams was in action taking on Victoria Azerenka. Williams continued her domination of Azerenka, making their head to head 3-0 in favor of the American who won in straight sets: 6-4, 7-6(4).

"She played a pretty good match, she was ahead most of the second set and she definitely made me work for it but in the end I had the right weapons to pull out the win." Venus said. "I'm very happy that we're up 2-0 and tomorrow Ashley and I will try to give us the final win that we need to get to the finals. It's all very exciting.

Venus is without a doubt the heart of the United States Fed Cup team. She lead the United States to a 4-1 win over Italy in the first round with Bethanie Mattek on her squad. Then in quarterfinal action, the Williams/Mattek team took out Central Europe 4-1. Venus is 4-1 in singles action and 2-0 in doubles for Fed Cup.

"I'm very happy with my results in Fed Cup. I definitely bring out my best and I think it shows. Whenever I'm determined and focused, I'm at my best. However, until recently, I haven't even cared about being at my best or anywhere near it. That's all changed now."

Venus' Blog From Fed Cup

Hey guys!

Today was a great day for the my team. Serena and I both won our matches and the U.S is up 2-0 against Eastern Europe. Tomorrow Ashley Harkleroad and I play doubles and we'll see if we can close it out in three which hopefully we can. We'll be playing against Victoria Azarenka and Edina Gallovits, and I must say, I feel pretty confidant going against Victoria again.

Today I beat her 6-4, 7-6(4) and she today she played the best match out of the three times we've played. She was hitting a lot of good shots and I just started getting frustrated in the second set because I couldn't close her out at the times I wanted to. In the tiebreaker, she was up 4-1 and I just fought through the errors that I was committing and won. I was so happy that I pulled through for my team and hopefully Ash and I can get the job done tomorrow.

After our matches, Serena and I went out to dinner. It was very fun and nice to eat American food again. Don't get me wrong, I love getting to eat new foods in other countries but there's times when I just want plain old American food. Even though it's probably the worst food for me.

Well I better be getting to sleep, don't want to stay up too late and miss practice. Wish me luck tomorrow!

-Vee.

Captain Breaks Her Silence After US Goes Up In Fed Cup

http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/506/12003-ausopen421.jpg

Q: So why the team Serena, why didn't you just go with the top players from your country?

A: Because of what happened today on the court. We are a very diverse nation and I wanted to represent that in this semi-final event. When we all come together to play for our country, it just brings out the best in all of the players, no matter what country you are from.

Q: Many have criticized you, saying that you are taking to big of a chance, what do you say to that?

A: Well, it was my decision and from the support Venus and I got today on the court from our country women, it seems like I made the right decision.

Q: How is everyone getting along?

A: We are getting along just fine. We all went to dinner last night and it was a very fun time. Ashley and Venus were hitting on the waiter and we had a lot of laughs, it was a good time and we've been having fun ever since.

Q: You are up 2-0 against Eastern Europe, you defeated the world no. 1 soundly in the first rubber and your sister scored a brave victory in the second rubber, what does the team do next?

A: Oh, I think Venus and Ashley are already on the practice courts, [Serena laughs]. These girls are not playing around. We all will be getting prepared for doubles and our final singles rubbers.

Q: Thanks Serena

A: Yep!

Venus and Ashley Practice

http://i29.photobucket.com/albums/c271/Jade_1990/venus-williams.jpg
Venus Williams runs down a ball during her practice session with doubles partner, Ashley Harkleroad.

Americans Venus Willliams and Ashley Harkleroad took to the practice courts today to get ready for the decisive doubles match which could be the last chance for Eastern Europe to make a comeback. After day one, in which the top ranked Americans, Serena and Venus Williams gave the Americans a 2-0 lead after winning their singles matches, veteran Fed Cup player Venus and rookie player, Harkleroad are looking to give the American team all the glory on day two.

"We're looking to pull off the win." Venus said at the practice courts. "Hopefully we can get it. That would be so amazing for Lindsay and Ashley to not have to worry about the pressure in their singles matches. But it's anyone's game really, I've never played with Ashley before but I think our game styles mesh well and I think we have a great chance."

USA Eliminates Eastern Europe

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/100.jpg
A U.S Team assisant coach, Venus Williams, Serena Williams and Lindsay Davenport all clap after the announcement that the United States will be advancing to the finals after an unbeatable 3-0 in their match against Eastern Europe.

Although there many not be many high ranked Americans on the tour, when it comes to Fed Cup, the United States are unstoppable. So what about the team tournament brings out the best in the Americans? Well it seems to be the Williams sisters.

Serena made quite the name for herself when she made some pretty unorthadox decisions by deciding to have rookie player Ashley Harkleroad take her spot in the doubles rubber with Venus Williams. Serena then made an even more unlikely choice when she announced that Harkleroad would also be playing the third singles rubber. Top 30 player, Lindsay Davenport was named to play the fourth singles rubber.

"I was a little unsure of why Serena chose Ashley Harkleroad to play doubles but I supported her decision. Serena and I have been a force in doubles but I think it's great that Ashley is getting the chances to be on the big stage and learn how to handle herself in these types of matches." Venus said at a press conference.

"I was happy that Serena listed me to play on the team, the fourth singles rubber could potentially be the biggest rubber of them all. If we were to come down to a tie then my match would be our ticket to the finals..." Lindsay Davenport trailed off. "but I'm not going to start thinking about all of that, with how the U.S plays in Fed Cup, we might win 3-0 or 4-1."

"I stand by all of my choices that I've made for Fed Cup. I've talked with all the girls on the team before announcing anything big and we're all on the same page which I think is important for any team." Team captain Serena Williams said.

Team captain and top ranked American, Serena Williams gave a dominating display of power when she defeated Eastern Europe's team captain, Margalita Chakhnashvili in straight sets; 6-3, 6-1. Big sister, Venus Williams followed Serena with a straight set win over Victoria Azerenka; 6-4, 7-6(4).

In what would turn out to be the deciding match for the rubber, the doubles team of Venus Williams and Ashley Harkleroad defeated Edina Gallovits and Victoria Azarenka in straight sets; 6-4, 6-1. It would be the expierence of Williams and the heart of Harkleroad that would send the Americans onwards to the finals after giving themselves an unbeatable 3-0 lead.

"I was so happy to play in the deciding match. It was so exciting and when we got up to 5-1 in the second set I had more butterflies than I did nerves." Ashley Harkleroad said smiling. "When Venus hit the final winner and I saw it flie past both of the girls, I screamed with joy, I was so happy!"

Harkleroad will still play her singles match as well Davenport.

Tennis Super Star Gone Super Model

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/catwalk.jpg
Venus Williams walks down the catwalk in a fashion show by Serena Williams who was presenting pieces from her collection, Aneres.

Venus and Serena Williams had little time to celebrate their Fed Cup victory, four hours after she walked off the court, she walked onto the runway for a fashion show put on by younger sister, Serena Williams who is putting out her own clothing line, Aneres, which is Serena spelled backwards.

Venus was to be used as one of the models and we caught up with the tennis titan to ask her what the expierence was like going from the courts to the catwalk.

Venus: Well I was definitely a little tired but everyone had so much energy and were so excited that they just gave me energy from being around them. It was very fun being able to be a model for Serena, I loved her collection and I'm hoping she lets me keep the dress I wore. [Laughs]

United States Destoys Eastern Europe

Venus Williams sits in the stands with her mother and cheers on Ashley Harkleroad in her singles rubber against world number one, Margalita Chakhnashvili.

The United States kept up their winning ways over Eastern Europe with Lindsay Davenport and Ashley Harkleroad both winning their singles matches ending a disappointing series for Eastern Europe who lost to the Americans 5-0. Even more importantly, rookie Ashley Harkleroad dazzled many in her hard fought win against world number one Margalita Chakhnashvili winning in three sets: 5-7, 7-5, 6-3. Lindsay Davenport only need 47 minutes to dispose of Edina Gallovits winning 6-1, 6-3.

Venus Williams who was watching court side for both matches was able to give some comments about the future of American tennis.

"You know there's a lot of new Americans that are on the tour such as Monica Seles, Angela Haynes, and Alexandra Steveson. It's great to have new faces and hopefully we'll get to see some great things from those ladies. As far as Ashley goes, I can definitely see her within the top 15 very soon. She plays good consistant tennis and it will pay off for her very soon."

Venus' Blog

Hey guys!

So as most of you already know, we won the Fed Cup series, 5-0! It was so amazing, I'm proud of everyone on my team and I think we all played fantastic tennis. Let's just hope that we can all keep it going leading up to the French Open. Not many of us are good on clay but I think we're all learning and it's a hard surface to master.

Tonight will be my last night in America before I take off to Italy and practice in Rome for the Italian Open. I really hope to do well there and lord knows I could use the ranking points. I've been sliding down slowly, I think I'm around the bottom of the top 15 which is pretty scary considering I used to be number one.

There's a tournament bonus for the player who has the most articles and I'd like to win that so I could get some extra help to try and win my second singles title. Camille Pin has been plastered all over the media and alls I really have to say to her is to shut up, this is my bonus bitch.

-Vee.
