Justine Henin:
Justine Henin is the clear favourite for the title. The world's number 2 made it to the finals of the Australian Open. Apart from that, she has won 2 clay court singles titles, in Amelia Island and Berlin.

Steffi Graf:
Steffi Graf have been quiet on the tour, but the world's number 5 has been really consistent, especially on the clay. She has made it to the semifinals of Charleston. The finals of Amelia Island and Berlin, both losing to Justine Henin. And winning her only title in Estoril.

Elena Dementieva:
This Russian is a clay court expert and one of the favourites, picking up a title in Charleston and making the finals of Estoril, losing to Steffi Graf.

Svetlana Kuznetsova:
Svetlana Kuznetsova, is another Russian who is a clay court expert. She has been handed a few unlucky draws and has been quiet unlucky with the cointosses. But she has a game that could beat anyone so she is one to watch at Roland Garros.

Maria Sharapova:
Maria Sharapova has been one of the most consistent and has made at least semis in all surfaces she's played on. Sharapova made 2 semis in clay tournaments, both tier I and is also one to watch.

Nicole Vaidisova:
She is there because she is a clay court expert and her strategy is getting better and better. She is one to watch.

Daniela Hantuchova:
Daniela Hantuchova has won titles on nearly every surface, she is only a dark horse because clay is her least favourite surface. But she is still dangerous and will be one to look out for!

Justine Henin is the clear favourite heading into Roland Garros, she has displayed outstanding results on the clay events leading up to the years second slam, walking away with titles in Amelia Island, Berlin and Rome and making the final in Charleston losing to Dementieva which is the only blemish on her 12-1 clay record. Justine has already proven herself a strong grandslam performer finishing runner-up at the Australian Open to Rebound Ace Queen Amelie Mauresmo, and she'll defnitely be looking to go one step further here on her favourite surface.

Justine heads into the event as the second seed just under 400 points behind number 1 and Australian Open champion Mauresmo, but with the way the draw panned out its probably better to be the second seed. Justine took part in the draw ceremony where by mere coincidence she drew only one other claycourt expert in her half (8)Vaidisova, she also drew (4)Sharapova and (6)Hantuchova, whereas in the top half apart from top seed Mauresmo and (3)Stosur, there is Kuznetsova, (7)Dementieva, Jankovic and strong clay performer (5)Graf all of which are very strong on clay and have posted excellent results. As the draw is it doesn't bode well for number 1 Mauresmo who is not all that comfortable on the clay surface, of course Henins half isn;t without its challenges, with the likes of 4th seed maria Sharapova who is no slouch on the clay, but there is no denying that the draw is lopsided. There have been rumours spreading throughout the lockeroom that Henins participation in the draw ceremony and her receiving a favourable draw didn't just happen by coincidence some even going as far as accusing her of rigging the draw. There at the moment no evidence of where these rumours have come from but it would be no surprise if Jelena Dokic was behind them, after all she is known for stirring up trouble on tour.

"even though my half of the draw seems very good for me there are still a lot of tough people there and if i'm going to win the tournament i'm going to have beat the best player from the top half anyway so it will definitely not be easy. I've been very consitent on the clay, for sure, I only had one loss and i'm very glad that Elena is far away from me in the draw. I finished runner-up in Australia, and i'd really love to one better here, this is probably my best chance at a slam this season so I hope I can make the most of the opportunity."

Kirilenko Demolishes Italian

Sets up All-Russian Encounter

Paris, France – Russian Maria Kirilenko has started her Roland Garros campaign strongly with a beat-down win over Francesca Schiavone, only dropping 2 games, demolishing the Italian 6-1 6-1. Both girls held their opening service games before Kirilenko turned it up a notch, winning her service game to love then wiping Schiavone off the court with fantastic tennis. Her forehand was on fire, as she hit winners from every position possible as she claimed to set 6-1, only dropping 8 points. In the second set, Kirilenko didn’t lose momentum as she immediately broke the wayward Schiavone to quickly lead 3-0. Her 8 game winning streak came to an end after a desperate Schiavone held serve only to be steam-rolled by an impressive Kirilenko. In less than an hour, Kirilenko progressed to the second round; setting up a match with fellow Russian and 7th seed Elena Dementieva.

“I felt really good out there,” said a pleased Kirilenko after the match. “I was really hitting my shots cleanly and it really paid off.” “I kept my unforced errors down which was good and I had a good first serve percentage.” “A win like really boosts my confidence after a couple unfortunate round 1 exits and I hope I can play like this tomorrow against Lena.” When asked about Dementieva’s weaknesses, Kirilenko said, “Tomorrow I’ll try to attack her serve, I need to be a step ahead in the rallies so it will give me an advantage.” “I’ll try to mix things up, maybe come to the net a bit.” “I will definitely take points one at a time, Lena’s a fighter and she won’t be giving me easy points.” The schedule for tomorrow hasn’t been released yet but Kirilenko will be playing doubles with good friend Maria Sharapova. “We nearly forgot to commit ourselves!” said Kirilenko, “Luckily we just made it in time.”

Sharapova to play Govortsova

After recieving a bye in the first round, Maria Sharapova will play against Belarusian Olga Govortsova for a place in the quarterfinals. Olga Govortsova defeated Ashley Harkleroad in a three set thriller 6-7 7-5 6-3 to set up a clash with the number 4 seed. This will be the first meeting between the two. Sharapova is the favourite to move on but says that anything can happen.

When asked about her disappointing loss last week, Sharapova said "It was last week, and Jelena played good so I have to give her credit for it. But it's [injury] getting better now, so I think I can try and produce my best tennis." She will also be playing doubles with Maria Kirilenko.

In the past few weeks, there have been articles about the Russians on the tour, and to start the week, there are 9 Russians in the draw.
In ranking order, they are:

There will be another all Russian battle between Maria Kirilenko and Elena Dementieva.

Henin To Face Vesnina

Justine wilk take on Russian Elena Vesnina for a place in the quarterfinals

Justine Henin is all set for her first match tomorrow up against Elena Vesnina, Henin received a first round bye and Vesnina took out countrywoman Anna Chakvetadze 6-4 6-4 in first round action. The opening days play went pretty mush as expected with no early round shocks as of yet, of course most of the seeded players are yet to play a match. Henin has not met Vesnina before but she is the clear favourite heading into the match, being far more experienced on the clay courts. The match should be fairly routine for Henin, however there will be a few exciting match-ups in the second round, these include:

[1]Amelie Mauresmo (180) v. Svetlana Kuznetsova (200)

H2H: Amelie leads 1-0 (Miami 6-4 6-4)
Verdict: This one is a very tough to call. Sveta has a clear advantage in points being a claycourt expert, but Amelie has the strategic mind and experience to overcome these kind of deficits. it will definitely be a tough match, and as we haven't seen much of Amelie on clay I'll go with Sveta in 3 tight sets.

[7]Elena Dementieva (200) v. Maria Kirilenko (190)

H2H: First Meeting
Verdict: This is another tough one, Elena has a slight advantage in points and has shown she can win on Clay taking the title in Charleston, however she can be a little prone to upsets, and Kirilenko is a solid player who is definitely capable of pulling the upset. Having said that I'll Say Dementieva in 2 tough sets.

[3]Samantha Stosur (170) v. Jelena Jankovic (200)

H2H: First Meeting
Verdict: Stosur has avoided the clay tournaments like the plague, Jelena although only a newcomer to the tour has posted outstanding results in the two tournaments she has played, reaching a semifinal and a final. Jelena's point advantage will be too much for the Australian and she'll take it in two competitive sets.

[6]Daniela Hantuchova (160) v. Vera Zvonareva (170)

H2H: First Meeting
Verdict: Daniela has also avoided the clay season, Vera is a newcomer and has a slight point advantage but the experience of Dani should be enough for her to win through to the quarters. Dani in 2 tight sets.
