I'll post the final, then we'll start doubles! If I don't have doubles points from both players, you will receive a walkover, although I have doubles points for just about everyone! when my opponent served to the deuce side I was missing a lot of forehand returns (my two-hander is my strength). But when he served to the ad side I hit at least 2 winners off the backhand and the rest were deep, so that kept me in the set. Finally I connected with my forehand on the deuce side and hit a shot down the line that he netted. After that, I hit an insideout forehand right in the corner and he let it go because he thought it was out, but it landed in and brought it to 5-5. 6 deuce games! It was hectic. :yeah: BTW I made the semis of my event this weekend! She ranked just barely in top 10 after the Australian Open with no matches won over the first four events. She started her clay campaign with her second event on clay, that is Bausch & Lomb Championship in the USA. She was still getting used to the green clay soil but sailed to the second round by dismissing countrywoman Nadia Petrova 6-2, 6-3. She met Australian Open doubles partner, Elena Dementieva who was the fourth seed in that round and despite both players love playing on clay, Dementieva just couldn't follow the pace of Kuznetsova's power shot on clay as she bowed out to Kuznetsova 7-6, 6-1. This gave the Russian a chance to play against Australian Open runner-up Justine Henin of Belgium in the semifinals. A very close encounter for both but the Belgian finally prevailed in straight sets 7-6, 6-4. However, that wasn't the end for Kuznetsova in the event. She then partnered with the Belgian in doubles and eventually claimed her third doubles titles by defeating Elena Dementieva/Nicole Vaidisova in the final. She was ranked two spot higher at #8 by virtue of reaching the semifinal in the Tier II event. http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/614/7d781028d341bc96d4376c3119f3db4a-getty-tennis-fra-open-roland-garros.jpg With a pretty decent performance in the event, the Russian brought her confidence to the next event which was also played on green clay - Family Circle Cup. Kuznetsova or more popularly known as 'Sveta' or 'Kuzzie' was supposed to play her first round match against another Russian Anna Chakvetadze but Chakvetadze had a shoulder injury and she withdrew from the event at the last minute. This led to a showdown between Kuznetsova and this time yet another Russian, fourth seeded Maria Sharapova. Despite Sveta showed that she was more comfortable on the clay court, her unforced errors kept piling up as the match went on. The fourth seed won 7-5, 7-5 and left Kuznetsova disappointed. She was more disappointed as her offer to play with Henin in doubles also got rejected as the Belgian had no plans to play. With that, Kuznetsova left the American soil with tons of disappointments and almost lost her confidence. She arrived at Berlin to continue her quest to win her first singles title. However, she was handed with a tough draw. After winning her first red clay match against Italian Francesca Schiavone in a hard fought match 5-7, 6-4, 6-4 that lasted just over 2 hour 30 minutes, she headed to the court the next day playing against the Amelia Island winner and Charleston runner-up Justine Henin for their second meeting. Being tired from the match the previous day, it was proved too much for Kuznetsova as she chased the balls and defended sluggishly. Eventually, she fell to the hands of the Belgian once again with another close loss 5-7, 6-7(5). She decided to play doubles with Dementieva at the last minute and lost again as Dokic/Henin defeated the Russian pair in 3 close sets. With all the losses coming her way, Sveta finally broke down at one point and decided that she gave herself two more chances as she could leave the tour for good if she was unable to do well. With that, she reached Rome for another Tier I event. She faced newcomer Vera Zvonareva of Russia in the first round. Despite having a tricky match up, Kuznetsova played with no pressure at all as she breezed through the next round with another match-up against compatriot Dementieva who defeated Henin in Charleston. This time Kuznetsova was more relaxed and this helped her a lot as she crushed her rival once again 6-1, 6-1 for a spot in the semifinals. Seemingly in a better form compared to the past few weeks, she met another newcomer. This time was Jelena Jankovic of Serbia. The Serbian had beaten Dinara Safina and Sharapova in straight sets in the previous rounds and was looking to duplicate her success against another Russian. Both players were in form and the match proved to be a real contest. Once again, Kuzzie didn't have the luck on her side as she lost in a 2 sets tiebreaks. She played doubles with Henin again and lost their first match against Jankovic/Vaidisova 5-7, 6-4, 2-6. http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/614/4374debe444a4998ee0243f53f391d3a-getty-tennis-fra-open-roland-garros.jpg Despite reaching semifinals, she was still ranked #9. Kuznetsova then travelled from Italy to France for the biggest and the most prestigous clay tournament of the season - Roland Garros which is also one of the four grand slam events. Kuznetsova's hope at that point was to reach at least semifinals. However, she was once again unlucky with the draw. She was in one of the toughest section of the draw. She drew against Althea Gibson first and then #1 and Australian Open winner Amelie Mauresmo in the second round. Both players are not fond of clay but certainly would be a threat as Kuznetsova also had her tough time. Anyway, Sveta won the American 7-5, 6-4 despite Gibson also played solid in the match. Her next opponent, Mauresmo has also improved a lot on clay. However, the Frenchwoman couldn't satisfy her homecrowd as she lost to the Russian 3-6, 2-6. With Mauresmo out, this would be the first time in any event especially in slams that none of the top 4 seeds reach the quarterfinals. The most shocking upset was Amelia Island, Berlin and Rome winner, and the heavy favourite #2 seeded Justine Henin crashed out in the second round to an unknown Russian Elena Vesnina in straight sets. The draw seemed become open wide as anyone could eventually claim the title. http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/614/13e671ceeae14847ec5c79911befe981-getty-tennis-fra-open-roland-garros.jpg For the third time, Kuznetsova faced Dementieva in the quarterfinals. With the experience from the past 2 meetings, Kuznetsova cruised to the semifinal for the second consecutive events as she defeated Dementieva 6-3, 6-2 in less than an hour. With the victory, Kuznetsova would face Estoril Open champion and another favourite for the title Steffi Graf of Germany. Graf had a pretty decent record on clay before this despite clay being her second best surface. The first set was a close affair with Sveta ended up getting a break and the set 6-4. After getting broken by the German, Kuznetsova surrendered the second set 1-6. The third set was a close one as Graf seemed always in the lead but Kuznetsova eventually closed out the match with her fourth service ace in the tiebreaker. The final showdown of the Paris grand slam event featured two Russian, which was between Keznetsova - the underachiever and also a surprising finalist, Zvonareva who was the underdog. Kuznetsova played against her opponent just last week in Rome and was set to beat her again to realize her dreams but Zvonareva played pretty well prior to the final. She defeated eighth seeded clay court expert Vaidisova in the semifinals in straight sets and also sixth seed Daniela Hantuchova before that. She won all her matches in straight sets despite clay is her second worst surface. Sveta made quick work on her opponent as she raced to a 4-0 lead before Zvonareva fought back to claim a few games. Kuznetsova held off her compatriot and won a break point to take the set 6-4. The second set was almost similar as #9 player sailed to another 4-1 lead before Zvonareva broke back to claim a couple of games. However, that didn't last long as Kuznetsova hit a backhand down the line winner on her second championship point to become the first winner of the clay grand slam event. http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/614/d941de5db070d6147f26b85997394250-getty-tennis-fra-open-roland-garros.jpg The following is the interview of hers after winning. M: Well done Svetlana for your first title and also your first slam! S: Oh thank you very much. M: How is your feeling after winning? S: Obviously I'm really thrilled. I really couldn't believe that I win a slam! (laughs) Who would have thought I'd be the one holding this trophy a week ago? Not even myself to be honest. I was only a darkhorse in this event just because I just reached semis last week in Italy and I'm a clay court specialist. M: What do you think you have done in this tournament? S: Well, I have done little adjustments to my game when I reached here. I was far too defensive before this. I knew it's time for me to make a sudden change or I would regret if I didn't do so. So I took a risk here and just played a very aggresive game. In spite of that, I didn't think I played exceptionally well you know. I knew I'm still vulnerable. Luckily players like Justine, Jelena and Maria lost early and I should thank their opponents for upsetting them. It really could have been a different outcome if one of them didn't lose. M: How about your opponents? Seems like almost every match is just easy for you except against Steffi. S: Absolutely. You know, she's a very solid player. She could really play well on any surface I think. Her winning the Estoril Open surely gave her a big confidence boost coming into this event as she knows what it takes to win matches. I just kept my pace and stayed behind her because I know if she's leading, there's no way I could come back. Having said that, others were not as easy as you think. Althea isn't a favourite on the surface but she is very dangerous and takes any chances she has to push you in the matches. As for Amelie, needless to say she's one of the best players, unbeaten on Rebound Ace surface. She has improved on clay but she seemed pretty nervous playing in front of her homecrowd. Perhaps the pressure on her to win the title has caught up on her. M: How about Elena and Vera? Both from the same country? Do you feel bad when playing against them? S: Oh, I really do feel a little bad but this is competition and we play tennis to win. We ought to play our best no matter what happens. Like in the quarters, I won her because the experiences I had helped me a lot. She did put up a fight but she was just unable to capitalize the big points. Vera was also playing pretty well too. I beat her in Rome and that time she was just playing her first event I think and now she's improving very fast. Clay is almost her worst surface yet she was able to beat Nicole and Maria on their favourite surface. She really should be given credit and I would definitely have my eyes on her in the future. M: After this victory in Paris, what would you do? You said you would leave the tour if you didn't reach the semis at least, right? S: (laughs) Yeah. I did. It was some kind of sarcastic yet encouraging comments for myself. I love to play on clay, you know but the results weren't coming no matter how hard I practised. I was on the verge of breaking down and almost quitting from tennis but I said to myself, since there's still a couple of chances, why not just take a bet and see what will happen. It doesn't hurt me if I do that. So I just made myself relax and try not to think too hard when playing. I know I could do it but it's just I'm unlucky at times. Now I have won and I definitely will stay for a period of time. I have gone celebrate my win with a few friends last night. We had a really good time. http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/0aMlcgI4AobAG/610x.jpg M: Any plans after this? S: I have decided to play in Fed Cup later. I think I'm in a group with Dokic, Elena and Tatiana. So it could be a very interesting team and I hope we'll do well. Besides I have also signed up for the hardcourt seasons. I have planned to play a full hard court schedule. Hard court is my favourite surface after clay and hopefully I'll do well too. Oh, how could I forget about Wimbledon? Anyway, I have to admit I don't prefer to play on grass but I might try my best to win a match on my worst surface since Vera could win like 3 matches on clay? Why not me?(laughs) Hopefully I'll draw someone who's not really good on grass as well so I have the slightest chance to win. M: Thanks for the interview. Congrats on your win again and hopefully we'll hear more from you soon. S: Oh, I hope so too. Thank you. http://www.wtnphotos.com/data/614/21237456131kuznetsova.jpg BWLH Jul 4th, 2008, 09:24 PM well, if I can't play doubles after losing in singles in the first round against the eventual winner, and with such a difficult draw, I think Warren really doesn't want me to stay #1 :o What's with the doubles related to your #1? :o You're just worrying that your position will be threatened. GracefulVenus Jul 4th, 2008, 09:24 PM no Momo/Anna? sorry, but I did ask both you guys to confirm!
