Despite her loss to Steffi Graf in the semifinals, Sharapova has moved uip another spot to number 3 and break that barrier for the first time. Sharapova lost to Graf 4-6 2-6 before losing in the doubles to Jelena Jankovic and Nicole Vaidisova 4-6 5-7, both in the semifinals. It was Sharapova's 6th semifinals, and she has a record of 1-5 (:o) Sharapova will play the last warm-up clay court event before Roland Garros in Rome.

Hi Maria, thanks for coming here.
Thanks for having me here it's always a pleasure.

So another loss in the semifinals, what are your thoughts?
Well, I mean, I can't be angry or unhappy about it. I mean, it's the last 4 so you expect it to get tough. Like, you can't win every tournament. Steffi was a great player and she got the better of me on the court so I congratulate her on that.

Clay is not your best surface, but you seem pretty comfortable on it.
No, you know, it's not my favourite, it's not my best, but I don't mind it.

Do you think you're a contender for the Roland Garros title?
Well, everyone is a contender, everyone has a chance to win it. If they're in the draw, there is a possibility you could win the title, so yeah, I am a contender. Why bother play if you don't have a chance to win.

Like as in, do you think you're a "favourite" for the title?
Erh, well that's kind of hard, I mean, like... it's your opinion, I can't judge myself. But the way I see it, there are a lot of great players out there, some are more comfortable than I am on the surface. But you can't count anyone out. You haven't lost until you've lost. But, like I said before, it's your opinion, so you tell me.

There have been a controversy with you and some other players with Dokic.
Yeh, I don't know what her problem is, I think she's mental, that's why she went to jail. But I don't know, she started attacking me first. So you know.. she can do what she wants. It's her life.

Back to a more positive note, you're a new top 3 player, are you happy with that?
Of course I'm happy, anyone would be. I mean, I was so happy to break into top 10 and then even happier to be top 5 and now top 3 it feels so amazing.

Are you aiming for number 2 now, or maybe even number 1?
Oh yeh, definitely, but you know, ahead me are some of the greatest players, Amelie Mauresmo and Justine Henin. It's going to be hard but I am going to try my best, give it my all, but I have to give them credit for getting there in the first place. The only way to go is up, you know, not just for me, but for everyone. Except of course Dokic, she's still going down (:devil:) The only thing going up for her is her weight. (JOKE :lol: :hearts: Uranium :hug:)

Sharapova Rome Preview

Sharapova will be playing in Rome this week and is the number 2 seed behind Justine Henin, agian. After a disappointing 5th loss in the semifinals last week, to Steffi Graf, Sharapova said that she came to Rome with a different tactic but it's a big risk. She said "I'm not too confident with my new points, but life is about taking risks right?"
Sharapova will also play doubles with Maria Kirilenko this week, for 3 weeks in a row.

The draw has just been released and Sharapova is the number 2 seed. The top 2 seeds, gets 2 byes (:eek:) and goes straight into the Quarterfinals. In the quarterfinals she could meet, the number 8 seed and Russian, Dinara Safina or newcomer Jelena Jankovic or Venus Williams. In Sharapova's half, is number 4 seed, Elena Dementieva, and number 6 seed, Svetlana Kuznetsova. Another Russian in her half is another newcomer Vera Zvonareva.

In the other half of the draw is number 1 seed, Justine Henin, number 3 seed, Steffi Graf, number 5 seed, Nicole Vaidisova and number 7 seed, Ashley Harkleroad. There are another 3 Russians on the top half of the draw, Nadia Petrova, Maria Kirilenko and Anna Chakvetadze.To start with there are 8 Russians, 4 of them are seeds and they are all in the bottom half of the draw.

Jelena Dokic will be looking to resurrect her singles career and work hard to find her old form. Jelena Dokic will be hitting the clay courts this week for preparation for the French Open.
Jelena Dokic in the first round will play Anna Chakvetadze, who has been having ups and downs lately.
"Well, the scoop on Anna is that she is so emotionally unstable that when she saw her draw last week she had a mental breakdown and bursted into tears.:eek: Talk about crazy, so she may be a no show tomorrow. Which may be good for me, since I need the points."
With her win last week, Jelena Dokic moved up to #15 in the singles ranks.
"This is good for me, my best seasons are now coming up, so with some good play on clay, I hope to find a good rhythm and try to pick up more confidence."
Dokic also last week moved back to her rightful spot as #1 in doubles.
"It's a great feeling, I have done so well in doubles this year, that being #1 is only fitting."
Jelena Dokic will be looking to try to win her first clay court doubles title this week as she plays with good friend Tatiana Golovin.
"We have a good game plan set up and are looking to take this title home and the Roland Garros title as well. We work well together, we made the Australian Open final earlier this year and hope to go one step further at Roland Garros."
Dokic, if she gets past Anna this week, would have to play Steffi Graf for the second straight week.
"I don't want to get ahead of myself, but I will try to do some new things to try to take down Steffi this time."
Dokic will be looking to get success in both events this week. If Dokic can win a singles title, she will become level 4.
"I want to become level 4, I have more doubles titles than most of them, but singles is my kryptonite, but after Roland Garros that will change in my opinion."
Henin, after losing in the final last week, is partnerless so far this week.
"Karma is a bitch sweetheart, when you have no effort in doubles match, players won't play with you. And her comments about me after the final showed her true character, that I am a nicer person and better than her:p"

Henin Given Pass To Quarter-Finals

Henin as the Top Seed will receive two byes to the quarterfinals as will second seed Sharapova.

Justine Henin has been playing some excellent tennis as of late, she started the clay season winning her very first title at Amelia Island, then fell in the final a week later in Charleston to Dementieva before bouncing back to win the title in Berlin. All this success is sure to build up the pint-sized belgians confidence for the second slam of the year which begins after this weeks tournament in Rome. Henin will be looking to continue her success on the surface and go deep into this tournament, she has also been given a helping hand, being the top seed for this event she will receive two byes into the quarterfinals. This means she will only have to play 3 matches in order to win the title. Those matches however will not be easy awaiting Henin in the quarter finals will be 5th seeded Czech teen Nicole Vaidisova who is a great clay courter and also a surprise semifinalist at the Australian Open. also in her half of the draw is number 3 seed Steffi graf, the German has displayed some consistent results on the clay and is always a threat, however Justine has beaten Graf in all of the three preceding clay court tournaments. Rounding out the other side of the draw is number 2 seed Maria Sharapova, who is always consistent, 6th Seeded Clay expert Svetlana Kuznetsova, and the Very dangerous Russian 4th Seed Elena Dementieva who beat Henin so easily in the charleston final two weeks ago.

Henin also be entered in the doubles draw teaming up with Svetlana Kuznetsova, after Sveta's regular partner failed to commit. The two have paired up once before when they were victorious in the Amelia Island tournament, they will defnintely be looking to emulate that porformance here at the tier I Rome event. Also in the doubles draw are Kirilenko/Sharapova, Jankovic/Vaidisova who beat Henin (partnered with Dokic) last week in the final of Berlin, And of course the top ranked doubles player Jelena Dokic and her partner Tatiana Golovin. Although Dokic hasn't had a lot of success in singles she is always dangerous in the doubles and will be looking for her fourth doubles title here in Rome.

The reason for the postponement was all of the umpires being sick and vomitting in their hotel rooms. There have been rumors circulating that one of the players had ruined the food last night at the player's party.
Jelena Dokic was willing to release her thoughts on the rumors.
"It wouldn't surprise me if it was Anna Chakvetadze, she may need more time to sabotage me and try to beat me:o. Or it could have been Justine, since she probably knows she isn't winning this week."
Last night was the player's party for all the participants at the Rome Tier I. All of the tennis stars were there, Jelena Dokic arrived along with Elena, Sveta and Tati in a stretch hummer and the camera men in front of the restaurant went crazy trying to photograph them.
"We are popular since they know that we will be winning Fed Cup and start the revolution of our domination."
Justine Henin arrived as well.........with her only friend Carlos Rodriguez.
"It's so sad, she is such a nice girl, but she is too arrogant and likes to talk about people like me behind their backs."
During the player's party, the players danced and ate great food, but people were suspicious as Anna Chakvetadze wasn't there.
"She may have needed a new job since tennis isn't working out for her, she may have became a chef so now she can eat to solve her sad problems she always cries about."
During the dinner, the umpires were complaining of the food tasting funny as were some players. Later that night, umpires and players a like were running in and out of the bathrooms to throw up.
"The party was fine, until a little bit of time after the dinner, when people started getting sick."
Many of the players feel that someone is trying to sabotage the tour or even worse postpone Rome and try to ruin some player's chances of winning.
"I don't like this happening, I was prepared to play today, but someone is trying to ruin my chances of winning and trying to aid Anna. I think it was Anna, she seems crazy enough to get all of the umpires sick and even the tour director Warren. But it could have been anyone, they are probably afraid of me and my new found confidence."

After the food poisoning scare from the umpires haulting play in Rome, Rome plans to come back strong today as action will begin. Jelena Dokic is first on Centre Court today taking on Anna Chakvetadze. Jelena Dokic expects to pull out the win.
Jelena Dokic though in preparation for a possible match today, she hit the practice courts. Jelena Dokic warmed up with her coach for 30 minutes before having a hitting session with good friend and double partner this week Tatiana Golovin. They worked on forehands, backhands, serves and volleys. After that they played a quick set of doubles against good friends Elena and Sveta.

Kirilenko Unlucky Yet Again

Rome, Italy – After all the tour staff recovered from the illness that had spread around the Rome campus, Russian Maria Kirilenko hit the courts again China’s Li Na and produced an enthralling battle. The first set was tight and could of gone either way as both girls holding serve with ease. But it was the Chinese superstar who pulled away with the set in a tiebreaker with a huge backhand down the line on her second set point. It was Kirilenko’s game that picked up in the second as she began to control points which frustrated Li Na. One break of serve was good enough as Kirilenko kept herself alive with some top class ground strokes to win the set 6-3. Li Na got an early break in the last set, to lead 2-0 before Kirilenko fought back to level it at 2 all. The Russian used her all-court game to hold on serve, but on the other end of court Li Na was doing the same. What proved the match-breaker at 4 all, Kirilenko who was holding a break point had her winner overruled as Li Na rallied off amazing winners from everywhere on court. Kirilenko never looked the same, as 2 lucky net cords fell in the Chinese favor as she claimed the last set 6-4.

After the match, Kirilenko said, “I thought I did pretty good out there but it was those few points that made the difference.” “The overrule really frustrated me, but I managed to compose myself again.” “The 2 net-cords in one game were really unlucky for me, but that’s how the cookie crumbles.” “It really was a coin toss of a match, but Na played very well and I wish her luck for the rest of the tournament. “When asked if she was in a slump, she said, “No, I feel I’m playing good tennis but been a bit unlucky.” “Hopefully my luck will turn around next week!” Maria will play doubles with her good friend Maria Sharapova before heading to Roland Garros for the second grand slam of the year.

Sharapova to Face Jankovic

Maria Sharapova will face Jelena Jankovic in the quarterfinals as she got a bye in the first two rounds, along with Justine Henin. While on the other had, Jankovic has played 2 matches prior to this one. Jankovic played Venus Williams first and won convincingly 6-1 6-2 before another convincing win over Dinara Safina 6-3 6-2. In the draw, there were 8 Russians to being with and 4 have made it throught to the Quarterfinals.

Petrova and Kirilenko lost in the first round while Safina lost in the 2nd round, and Zvonareva lost to fellow Russian, Svetlana Kuznetsova. In the quarterfinals, in the top half, there is only Anna Chakvetadze who is having a great tournament who beat number 3 seed, Steffi Graf in the second round 6-3 6-4. In the bottom half, 3 out of 4 quarterfinalists are Russians, Svetlana Kuznetsova, Elena Dementieva and Maria Sharapova. Elena Dementieva will take on Svetlana Kuznetsova and a Russian will be guaranteed a place in the semifinals.

During practice, Maria Sharapova has hurt her wrist but will try it out for a bit in the match but is not confident about a win. Sharapova have come in for a press conference after the injury and said that "The doctor said not too much pressure on it, but told me to try it out. But if I can't handle it then I will have to pull out. This is very unfortunate for me, because I was looking forward to playing this event, but it's better than having it during the grandslam. If I do pull out of this even then I will be flying to Paris and start to work there whenever it gets better. Jankovic is a good player and she is a more comfortable on the surface than I am. But I will try my best. As you all know, I like to try my best and give it all when I'm playing out there."

Their quarterfinal match will be played later today.

However an injury concern leaves a shadow over [2]Sharapova's chances as she is coming up against relative newcomer Jelena Jankovic who continued her impressive start to her season demolishing Venus Williams 6-1 6-2 and easing past 8th Seed Safina, it doesn't look like an easy match for Sharapova.

Justine is yet to set foot on the Rome clay courts after she received 2 byes, but play has been underway in the Italian capital. and the seeds have held true, at least in the top quarter of the draw, Teen sensation Nicole Vaidisova is the 5th seed at this tournament and she easily accounted for Serena williams winning through to the Quarters 6-2 6-2. Earlier in the season Nicole made the semifinals in Melbourne where she met with Justine who had little trouble to win 6-1 6-1 however the surface was definitely a factor in that match, Nicole was playing on her worst surface, while Henin on her 3rd. Both of these girls are claycourt experts so it will definitely be a very tough match and the winner will be through to the semifinals to face either Li Na or Anna Chakvetadze, both of which are surprise quarterfinalists.
