Jelena looks on, almost in disbelief, as she upsets 2nd seeded Maria Sharapova

ROME, Italy - And her run continues ... The superb debut of Jelena Jankovic continues ... In the first two round she beat Venus Williams and Dinara Safina only dropping 8 games in total. In the quarterfinals she was set to face 2nd seeded Maria Sharapova. As a #2 seed, she was in the quarters on virute of two byes. Jelena knew that this could work out in her favor, "I played two very good matches while she didn't. I was very nervous coming out but I just told myself to do your best. You will have your chances today."

Jelena's nerves were displayed at first as Masha went up and she was showing no signs of rust. However, Jelena started to play better from that point on and showed us her grit and willingness to fight. At 5-4 on serve, Maria was hitting good serves but Jelena was returning with great confidence. At 15-40, Maria hit a loopy second serve and Jelena threw down the gauntlet for a return winner and set.

The second set saw Jelena looking to continue her momentum as she went up 3-1 but Maria wouldn't give in. Maria started to put more length on her groundstrokes. In reply, she got shorter returns from Jelena where she would have an easy putaway shot. She got the score back to 3-3 but Jelena would grab the next two games to go up 5-3 and match points. However, crisp shot making from Masha and some nerves closing out got Masha back into the match again! But then again Jelena handled the late match pressure at the end to close out the match with some great touch. Jelena commented, "This is a big win for me. Maria is #2 in this tournament so she is obviously a very good player. Her power alone can beat me but I knew that this is a clay court so I'll get more chances to get more balls back. On this surface it's about persistence and patience and I think I was able to show that today."

In the semifinals, she will face 6th seeded and good friend Svetlana Kuznetsova. She has been looking sharper than ever, crushing 4th Elena Dementieva 6-1, 6-1. On the match Jelena commented, "The match tomorrow is going to be very, very touch. I'm going to have to be at top of my game if I want a spot in the final. Svetlana's game is really made for this surface but mine is too, so I'm going to just give it my all out there and we'll see what happens. Hopefully I'll be the one who advances to the final."

Henin Fights to Take 3rd Title

Justine thanks the crowd after she won her third title

Justine Henin was the top seed at this weeks Tier I event in Rome and she lived up to the expectations capturing her third title of the season in her 6th final appearance. The week didn't start well for the tournament organisers when an illness spread throughout the tournament staff at the pre-tournament party, however things turned around once play had started with some impressive play by many of the players here this week. Justine was lucky enough to remain healthy throughout the ordeal but her path to the title was not all that easy despite the advantage of having two byes to begin with.

In the Quarter-finals she came up against claycourt expert and number 5 seed Nicole Vaidisova, the last time they met Henin completely destroyed the young Czech losing only two games, however Justine knew it would be different this time as they were evenly matched on the clay surface. Vaidisova started the match strongly using her powerful serve and groundstrokes to gain an early break and lead 4-2. Justine played some brilliant defense to reclaim the break of serve to level at 4-4, before running through the next two games to seal the set with a fantastic lob winner 6-4. In the second set Nicole got another early break to lead 2-0, but once again Henin turned the tables on her younger opponent to storm through 4 games in a row moving Nicole all over the court and forcing her into error. However this time it was Nicole who diplayed her fighting spirit reeling off numerous forehand winners to level the set at 4-4. Justine had a chance to break for the match at 5-4 but Vaidisova's powerful serving helped her out of trouble to eventually take the set to a tiebreak. The players were extremely tense in the tiebreak both committing a few reckless errors, but it was Vaidisova who eventually crumbled mentally to allow justine to seal the match 6-4 7-6 in just under 2 hours on court.

Justine was the heavy favourite going into her semifinal match with Anna Chakvetadze, mainly because she has so much more experience playing on clay. Anna had a very good week upsetting 3rd Seed Steffi Graf in the round of 16 before taking out newcomer Na Li. This match was much easier for Henin, she started out dictating play with her solid groundstrokes to race to 4-0. Anna picked up her play on the return to get a break back but there was little she could do against the barrage of Henin groundstrokes and it was soon 5-3. On set point Anna set herself up well being very aggressive and had Justine scrambling across the court, but then she missed a routine volley wide to hand over the set 6-3. The second set went with serve for the first 4 games before Justine broke serve twice to lead 5-2, Chakvetadze recovered one of the breaks with a little help from Justine, but in the next game Justine sealed the match with a powerful backhand winner, 6-3 6-3.

The final was always going to be a tough one Jelena pushed Justine almost to her limits last week in Berlin before Justine finally closed it out 4-6 *7-5 6-3 and this one was expected to be equally as tough. Jelena had been very impressive in only her second tournament on tour taking out the second seed Maria Sharapova and also the sixth seed Svetlana Kuznetsova to reach the final. The match started better for Justine as it seemed Jelena was a little nervous in her first final. Justine gained the early break and pushed the defensive Jelena all over the court to cruise to a 5-2 lead, however this is when Jelena started to be more aggressive and finally settled into the match. Jelena hit some spectacular backhand passing shots as well as forcing Henin into numerous errors and it was soon all level at 5-5. Jelena continued with aggressiva returns to break for a 6-5 lead, but when it came time to serve for the set she threw in some very slow serves which Justine had no trouble putting away for winners. The set then went to a tiebreak and Jelena seemed a little dejected after letting her chance slip, she threw in a few more errors and Justine soon had 4 set points at 6-2, she only needed one as she closed out the set 7-6 with a forehand down the line winner. Jelena regained her composure in the second set and got the early break to lead 4-2, Justine clawed it back to 4-4 using some solid defense and forced Jelena into going for too much. Jelena served for the set at 5-4, but just as in the first set had a shaky game which allowed Justine to level at 5-5. this time it was Justine who struggled with her serve and double faulted twice to give Jelena another chance to serve for the set at 6-5. The set was forced to a tiebreak after a very long game where Jelena had 4 set points but failed to convert and was finally broken. This time Jelena didn't let up so easily, the two battled it out from the baseline with each rally lasting over 20 shots, but it was Justine who broke ahead for 6-5 when Jelena netted a backhand passing shot. Justine won the final point by drawing Jelena to net with a nice dropshot before lobbing her with pinpoint accuracy to take her third title 7-6 7-6 after a marathon battle lasting 2 and half hours.

Justine will still contest the Doubles event with Svetlana Kuznetsova, hopefully they can repeat their success in Amelia Island Where Justine also took out both titles. The draw is yet to be released but they could face either Kirilenko/Sharapova, Jankovic/Vaidisova or Dokic/Golovin in the semifinals.

Dokic has been sending around allegations about two of the tour's up rising players lately. Dokic and Justine Henin lost to Jelena Jankovic and Nicole Vaidisova last week in a tight 2 setter. This week, JJ and Vaidisova took down Dokic and Golovin in the final 6-2 7-6. Jelena Dokic has had enough of this pair and calls for action to be taken. Dokic has accused them of being cheating transexuals.
"How do you expect us to beat men? We play on the women's tour to play fellow women, not men dressed in women's clothes. I demand for action to be taken here."
Dokic has also accused them of kidnapping Justine Henin.
"After Justine beat Jankovic, she disappeared, just vanished. Sveta was forced to play doubles with Elena to ensure that she wouldn't be given a walkover loss because Justine vanished. Jankovic and Vaidisova went on to beat them and us. After the doubles final, Justine just popped up out of no where. I think the trannies kidnapped her to make sure that they would win the doubles event. They are cheaters!"
The tour will be investigating this crime and action will be taken as now, Justine Henin and Sveta will take on Jankovic and Vaidisova for a spot in the final. If Henin/Kuznetsova win, they will play Dokic/Tati, but if Jankovic/Vaidisova win, they would either win the title or play Dokic/Tati again.
"I'll be rooting for Henin/Sveta since we could probably beat them. I recommend they use SVETA'S POINTS."
This Italian Open has been full of investigations now with the umpires getting sick prolonging results and now this kidnapping of Justine, the tour directors will probably now try to figure out the culprit of these crimes, but it's convenient all of this happens just when Jankovic arrives.:scratch:
