CHARLESTON, SC - World #7 Svetlana Kuznetsova is ready for the Tier I event Family Circle Cup in Charleston. After taking her second EWTA title last week at Amelia Island, Svetlana seems as confident as ever. "Yeah, I had a great tournament at Amelia Island last week. And I want to see if I can try and continue the momentum here into Charleston." With a newfound dedication to the game, Svetlana has seen good changes in her results. "Yeah, I've been training and practicing harder than ever. Previously and after my win in Paris[Indoors], I used to not even practice before coming to tournaments. Everything is different now and I can see a positive difference in my game." In the first round, the #7 seed will go up against Bangalore champ Maria Sanchez Lorenzo. Svetlana commented, "It is a very tough draw for me. Maria is on the brink of getting to the Top 10 herself so it is disappointing we have to meet so early. My coach and I have gone over a different tactic so I hope that I can get a similar result."

Americans Lindsay Davenport and Serena Williams were excited about playing in the Family Circle Cup this year. That was until they found out that they would be in the same quarter of the draw. This would be the 4th time this season they have ended up on the same side of the draw and the third time in the same quarter. Both players have the same coach and practice together, but since Serena is in the top 10 and Lindsay has a much lower rank, both players know that meeting up early in events is more than a possibility.

"Of course neither of us are happy about it," said Serena. "But what can you do, but go out there and try to do your best. I'm pretty sure things will get better for us when were are both ranked a little higher."

Sharapova Crushes Gallovits

Maria Sharapova has defeated Edina Gallovits in the first round to make it to the second round. Sharapova was the opening match of this year's Family Circle Cup and won convincingly 6-1 6-4. The first set was a completely dominant performance, losing 6 points, in which four are in 1 game. The second was a tougher affair as both held serve until 4-4 where Sharapova notched it up and won the last two games to clinch the game, set and match 6-4. Sharapova will now face world's number 1 Margalita Chakhnashvili in the second round.

Sharapova's friend, Jie Zheng, who has the same coach will start her campaign tomorrow!

The first rouhd of Action at the Family Circle Cup saw American Lindsay Davenport in an exciting match with wild card Anne Keothavong. After dropping the first sight in some exciting play from both players, Lindsay would gain crucial breaks of serve in the second and third set to move into the second round.

"This was a good first round win for me today. I played the big points well and I think that is what my game is about. I can get out there and slug it out with the best players, but when it's time for me to be mentally strong on those big points, thats what I hope I can do well.

Anne was a great opponent today. I think we were pretty evenly matched from every part of the court except for serves, so yeah, it was a good match and I'm looking forward to the next round of play."

Daniela Hantuchova started her Tier one Family Circle Cup in Charleston playing against always dangerous, Nicole Vaidisova. Daniela bowed out in the quarter-finals to Gisela Dulko, who retired this week. But this week she ws determined to win the title. She played flawless tennis against the Czech. The first set would go by rater quickly as Hantuchova took the first three games breaking Vaididova twice. Daniela would serve it out to take the set 6-3. The second sat saw Vaidisova go out to a 4-0 lead,Luckily Daniela would not be swayed fighting off two set points at 5-2. Little did Vaidisova know she would only have one game left in her as the match went to a tie break. The Slovak assured two minibreaks to go ahead 5-2 Daniela then aced Vaidisova and hit a return winner to win the match. Nex round she faces Lindsay Davenport whom struggeled to beat Anne Keothavong.

Today was amixed day for the number three and four seed ans one left and the other prospered. On a sad note Agnes Szavay was no able to close out her tough three setter against world umber six Tatjana Malek. The first set was all Szavay, she was crealy in control dictating play, but did not capitilize on break points untill the tenth game, breaking at love to take the first set 6-4.The next set was much more troublesome for the young Hungarian, she faced many problens including her sereva nad maleks brand new serve and volley technique she empoyed toward the end of the set, which she took 6-1.
The third set was the most intense set of the tournament. Malek raced to a four love lead, but Szavay rebounded to come back at 4-4. The match went on and it went to a tie break. The tie break featured relentless tennis from the two as it went to nine a piece. Unfourtunatly a double fault gave Malek the match."In dissappointed. The second set just puzzles my and the third set was just so tight it huts to lose."

Daniela Hantuchova was mucho luckier as seen by the result. She faced Amelia Islands shock-finalist Alona Bondarenko, who is a giant killer. The match started rough for the Slovakian, going down 4-0 netting loads of easy shots. Who would have expected the Slovak to rally off eight games in a row to take the set 6-4 an lead 2-0 in the second. Fore hand exchanges and backhand winners brought the game to 5-4 Hantuchova up a break and serving for th match. She started out shaky netting her serve for a doublefault. Hantuchova woul;d not lose another point tyhough. Hitting two backhand downt the line winners and an ace on matchpoint. "Its goo to get by someone who playes her best tennis against the top ten[laughs]. Im not looking forward to tomorrow but I hope I can get to my third final and maybe my second title."

Preview

A super surpising final with two first-time-finalists in a Tier I final and the last green clay event. Both these two girls have got a pretty good stragety in the tour, but they just didn't have a good luck, and now they both meet each other in this prestigious final!!

Maria, ranked only 30, coming to this tournament with a bad draw, players like Margalita Chakhnashvili, last week champion Svetlana Kuznetsova, last week finalist Alona Bondarenko, Indian Wells champion Daniela Hantuchova, Indian Wells finalist Serena Williams, Bangalore champion Maria Sanchez Lorenzo. But Maria comes through from them and reaches the final WITHOUT DROPPING A SET!!! And none of her sets have came to a tiebreak!! So how impressive she is in this tournament!!

But Tatjana is also very good, but no as impressive as Maria. In her road to the final, she won only one straight sets match, the others are all in 3 sets, and she has downed 5 match points to 3 different players, Zvonareva(2MPs), Szavay(1MP), Henin(2MPs), how tough is she!! Mental tough is the most important thing on clay courts!!

This is probarly the most important thing that Maria and Tatjana wants to know!!;)

Despite all odds, Maria Sharapova have come through the toughest draws to make it into the finals and has a chance to win her first singles title in the EWTA. Meeting her in the finals will be another player who has never been in the finals, Tatjana Malek. The finals will be played tomorrow at 3pm Perth time. Tatjana Malek have the advantage in the head-to-head at 1-0 defeating Sharapova in the first round of Dubai, 6-2 2-6 6-4.

But, Maria Sharapova has the better form this week coming through a very tough draw with drawing, facing world number 1 Margalita Chakhnashvili, last week's champion and fellow Russian, Svetlana Kuznetsova, also last week's finalist, Alona Bondarenko, Indian Wells champion, Daniela Hantuchova and the finalist, Serena Williams, also Bangalore champion Maria Sanchez Lorenzo. Out of the 4 matches, 3 of them were against top players. Sharapova has had a more dominant matches. She hasn't dropped a set and has never been taken to more than 9 games in a set. While Tatjana Malek have struggled more and have only faced 1 top player, Agnes Szavay. On her way to the finals, she saved 5 match points in 3 different matches.

Whatever the result will be, both girls will move up the rankings. Sharapova will move up to 19 if she loses and Tatjana will move up to number 4. If Sharapova wins, Sharapova will move up to 15 and Tatjana will move up one spot to 5.

Daniela: Welll niether of us really expected this to happen but I think even though its on clay this match will be wondeful.
Agnes: It trly will be, each have had extraordinary runs barly dropping sets and playing the tennis of thierf succesful careers.
Daniela:Malek has finaly had her second breakout and its nice to see a face dominating this tournament, she took you Agnes out in thrree tough sets and she can definitly do damage this Tier one tournament.
Agnes:Maria has a great coach and that alone propelled her to this final.
Daniela:I'm going to go with Maria beecuse her coach has a strrategy perfect for the top players. She will make Tatjana job tough and It will be a a ball bashing pleasure to watch also she took me out
Agnes: Thats very likley but we havnt given malek enough credit. She has simply been better this tournament. Malek in three becoause she took m out!
