Wimbledon Champions Japan will be looking for some wins here to show they are good on any surface. They will be the firm favourites againt Great Britain, as they have lost a grass match since Birmingham last year. Mel South has a big task infront of them
*
*
*
Israel are looking like a team to be reckoned with this year and their new found confidence could serve them well here. Roberta Vinci is the third seeds opponent.
*
*
*
Fourth seeds Thailand made the final of Wimbledon last year but their attention to the game has never been great. Timea Baczkinsky has a great chance to get a win here.

http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/smashy.jpg
Anna Smashnova gives a little pose during her training session on the grass courts of Doha.
Israel's Anna Smashnova, who is making her debut in singles this week, has already made history, she has received the highest seeding for an Israeli singles player in a tournament. Smashnova is seeded third and has a round one bye in the tour's first grass court tournament in Doha.
Also in action for Israel this week is singles veteran, Shahar Peer who will be teaming up with Venus Williams in women's doubles. This will be the first time the two women have teamed up but Peer thinks they have a good shot at taking the title.
"The Israeli team has been practicing a lot on the grass courts and we feel really comfortable on it. Venus is a great player on grass and she is a great player at the net which will really help us. I hope we can go far and take the title. It would be great if Israeli could win their first singles and doubles title this week." Peer said in an interview.
When asked about how she's handling the pressure about being a top-seeded player, Smashnova responded:
"I honestly don't feel that much pressure. I'm just going to go out there and play my best. I play either the United States or Italy, they are both strong teams but I have been training for this moment for quite some time, I'm not going to just let it slip away, I'm going to fight. I'm here to win, anything less just isn't good enough." Smashnova said.

http://images.scotsman.com/2006/06/30/3006venb.jpg
Doha, Qatar
USA was finally able to get their first win of the season in the second week back from the off season.
Last Week, Meghann Shaughnessy lost a tight 2 setter to Iveta Benesova of the Czech Republic.
This week, Venus in round 1 took on, last week's champion, Amelie Mauresmo of France on grass.
In set 1, Venus Williams looked rusty and Amelie looked fresh and used her serve and volley tactics to hold serve for a 4-3 lead and got her first on only break of the set when Venus hit a forehand long. Amelie served out the set and won it 6-3.
Set 2, was full of great tennis, with both players using their great net skills to good use. In the tiebreak, Venus used her big groundstrokes to pass Amelie at net and eventually take it 7-2.
Set 3, Venus continued her momentum and got an early break. Amelie didn't stop fighting, but Venus closed her out with an ace on match point to win it 6-3.
"It feels great to be able to give USA our first win. We wanna keep this momentum going into the next round and hopefully win this tournament. Switzerland will be tough, but I am confident."

Uranium Jun 9th, 2008, 10:17 PM USA makes First Final Of The Season
http://cache.daylife.com/imageserve/00de79o0pz3x5/610x.jpg
Doha, Qatar
Venus Williams has now carried her to team to their first final since the hard court season. Venus Williams will be taking on doubles partner Anna Smashnova.
http://www.bbc.co.uk/radioassets/photos/2007/6/28/23140_2.jpg
Venus Williams today took on Timea Basciszky on the grass here of Doha.
In set 1, Venus and Timea used their big groundstrokes and their weapons, mainly their backhands, to both hold serve easily. They both stayed on hold and at 4-5, Venus faced set point against her, but she used her net skills to hit a volley winner, and eventually leveled the set at 5-5 when she hit a massive backhand winner. Venus quickly continued her momentum and broke Timea's serve with a huge forehand return winner. Venus then closed the match out with a 125MPH service ace.
Set 2, once again both players continued to hold serve, but Timea finally got the break for a 5-3 lead when Venus hit a double fault on break point. Venus never gave up as she fought hard and broke Timea right back for a 4-5 set. Timea took advantage of Venus' shaky forehand and was able to close the set out 6-4, when Venus hit a forehand wide.
Set 3, both players again stayed tough in the early goings of the second set by holding serve until 3-3, where Venus attacked Timea's weak second serves to get the break. Venus followed it up with a quick service hold and a 5-3 lead. Timea was able to win her service game and put pressure on Venus to close out the match. Venus did close out the match with ease and won the game at love. Venus, on match point, serve and volleyed for the win and hit a volley winner for the win and to make the finals to play Smashnova tomorrow.

"I am happy with how I played today. I am a little tired now having gone 3 sets in both my matches, but I beat 2 tough top players, France and Switzerland. I hope I do well in the final and can win my first grass title. I play Anna, we were supposed to be doubles partners, but I don't know if we will play doubles since there has been no draw made. I wish her luck, but I hope I win tomorrow."

young_gunner913 Jun 10th, 2008, 12:06 AM Smashnova Smashes Morigami
http://i20.photobucket.com/albums/b241/FlamingoSpice/sma.jpg
Team Israel's Anna Smashnova attends a brunch after defeating Wimbledon champions, Team Japan, in the semi-finals of the Doha Open.
Israel's Anna Smashnova is making the most out of her debut singles appearence on the grass courts of Doha, Qatar. Smashnova dominated her quarterfinal match against Team Italy's Roberta Vinci, winning in straight sets; 6-3, 6-1. Earlier today, Smashnova delivered another stunning performence when she defeated Wimbledon champions, Team Japan. Representing Japan was Akiko Morigami, Smashnova fought past Morigami to take the match in straight sets; 7-6(2), 6-0.
"I'm so excited that I'm playing so well. My first two matches have definitely prepared me for the finals tomorrow. I feel like I'm playing great and I think I have a great shot at taking the title." Smashnova said in a post match conference.
In the first set, Smashnova raced off to a 5-2 lead and everything seemed to be on track. However, Morigami rallied her way back into the set, dominating the next four games to put herself ahead 6-5. Akiko continued her tough play on Anna's service game and the Japanese woman found herself with a set point at 30-40. Smashnova served a 113 mph serve which Morigami slapped a cross the court but way out of bounds.
The Israeli fought through the next couple of points to find herself in tiebreaker in which she would continue her tough play to stun Akiko by winning the tiebreaker after being down 1-2 and winning the last six consecutive points to take the first set 7-6 (7-2).
"After the first set was over, I was really relieved. It was a very close set and I felt that she was playing better than she was at the start of the match and that I needed to close this set out as soon as possible."
In the second set, the sharp shots and stunning winners seemed to stop flowing off the racquet of Morigami and her beatuiful ground strokes turned into numerous short balls which allowed Smashnova to easily convert into winners. Smashnova dominated every game and took the set at love.
"In the second set, she just seemed to be making a lot of mistakes. Her shots that she depends on were letting her down and I could see that she was getting frutrated. I knew that I just had to keep playing the way I was playing and I was going to be in the finals."
Smashnova will meet Team United States who are being represented by Venus Williams in the championship match. Williams is the American player teaming up with Israel's Shahar Peer in women's doubles for the tournament.
"Venus will be a tough opponent but I think it will be a great match and hopefully I can come out on top. She's such a fighter and I think if I'm playing as consistant as I have been over the past couple of days that I can take the title."
If Smashnova can pull of the biggest win of her career, Team Israel will have it's first tour title. This tournament has definitely been a mildstone in the path of Israel's rise to the top.

http://www.womenstennisblog.com/wp-content/uploads/2007/07/venus-williams-wins-wimbledon-2007.jpg
Doha, Qatar
Venus Williams showed us her athletic capabilities with winning all of her matches this week in long three setters.
Venus made a huge upset in round 1 taking down Amelie Mauresmo 3-6 7-6(2) 6-3. Then took down Timea of Switzerland 7-5 4-6 6-4. Venus went into the final against Anna Smashnova, whom had yet to lose a set this week.
In the first set, Venus and Anna traded holds and breaks back and forth so no one could have a huge lead. Anna used her push game and speed to have Venus hit errors and get broken to be down 4-5. Anna served for the set, but nerves seemed to take place, and Venus crushed her serve with 4 straight return winners off 4 serves in around the 80MPHs. Venus continued her momentum to use her serve and spin out wide to take Anna off the court and Venus replied off the short balls to hit into the open court.
http://images.scotsman.com/2006/06/28/2006-06-28T164923Z_01_NOOTR_RTRIDSP_2_OUKTP-UK-TENNIS-WIMBLEDON-PRIZEMONEY.jpg
Anna was able to hold serve after saving a set point when Venus hit a forehand volley into the net. The set would be decided in a tiebreak, Anna took complete control and used her experience to lead 6-3. Venus never gave up as she fought back hard, saving 2 of the 3 set points with aces and Anna hitting a backhand just wide on set point #3. Venus then got the minibreak control when Anna double faulted. Venus served out the set 8-6 with her 7th acve of the set.
Set 2, Venus looked tired and a bit sluggish.
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/42466000/jpg/_42466556_vn300.jpg
She had bad footwork and Anna took advantage trying to push the limits of Venus with hard shots. Anna tried to even come to net and pressure Venus to pass, which she couldn't and would hit an error. Venus ended the set with a double fault on set point for Anna.
Set 3, Venus and Anna both knew the end was near and both wanted the win. Venus took the full advantage breaking Anna's tentive serve easily to lead 4-2. Anna would keep running down Venus' shots and causing her to hit errors. Venus at 4-3, faced 2 break points for Anna to level the match at 4-4, but Venus fought hard and once again today tested serve and volley which prevailed as she would hit volley drive winners to save the break points and hold serve for 5-3.
http://www.todosports.com/media/20070707-100321-VENUS%20WILLIAMS,%20SEMIFINAL%20WIMBLEDON%202007.j pg
Anna started to get down on herself, and Venus ran away with the match, but on match point Anna attempted an ace,
http://www.chinadaily.com.cn/sports/2007-07/05/xin_5407040501246002805311.jpg
that Venus barely got her racket on and lobbed it in, Anna ran to net hit a forehand swing volley that Venus tracked down and passed Anna for the win.
http://www.theage.com.au/ffximage/2007/07/08/finals9_narrowweb__300x426,0.jpg
"I am so happy right now. This is my first singles title and on my favorite surface of grass. Serena won USA's first and then only title in Toronto, so for me to win here is amazing for me. I am sad that I beat Anna, she was a great opponent, but I was just a bit better than her today. I will look forward to the Australian Open and cheer my team on and hope that we can do well."
Venus became the first unseeded champion of the new season, 10minutes before Sveta won her title in Hobart, so Venus gets the privilege of saying she is the first unseeded champion.
