"Sveta" sets up for a volley against #2 Maria Kirilenko in the second round

AMELIA ISLAND, FL – Russian floater Svetlana Kuznetsova fought into the quarterfinals at the Bausch & Lomb Championships at Amelia Island with three set wins over Maria Sanchez Lorenzo and #2 seed Maria Kirilenko.

In the first round, Svetlana using fluid topspin shots was painting the corners on with great serves, forehands, and volleys. She won the first set comfortably 6-3. In the second set, the Bangalore champion was able to get her clay court game and took it in a tiebreak. In the final set, Sveta was able to just squeeze through a tight decider 6-3.

Svetlana said: “Yeah, it was a tough match for me. I don’t know. Maria is in some good form winning Bangalore a couple of weeks back. So I guess it’s a good win for me. I want to get back to form.”

In the second round, Svetlana was able to recapture the form that took her to the Paris Indoors title. She took the first easily again 6-3. But Maria proving why she is the #2 player fought back to take the second 4-6. In the third, they both were giving their best tennis but it was Sveta who prevailed 7-5 and moved on to the quarterfinals.

Svetlana said: “Yeah, it is a good win for me. I have to thank Maria for giving me a good match out there. Personally, I think that it is all on me. Outside my win in Paris Indoors and semifinal in Indian Wells I haven’t been doing that well. But personally I think it’s all on me. If I become more dedicated to the tour, I’ll be a much bigger threat than I am now. I’ve trained harder and now I have two more wins under my belt. I want to become better so I’m just going to keep working hard.”

SVETLANA KUZNETSOVA: Well there are some tough opponents left. Alona Bondarenko won the title in Miami and both Vika Azarenka and Gisela Dulko are tough opponents. I'm just going to continue playing my game, I really like the dirt.

Q: Your next opponent is Vika Azarenka. What are your tactics for that match?
Well like I said, I will continue to play my game. My serve is going to have be on and I will do my best to control the points and put her on the defense. Obviously, she is a very big offensive player so I'll do my best to be the aggressor out there and then I'll try to win.

Lindsay Davenport was given a wild card into the Bausch & Lomb Championships and feels she made the best of it, with a quarter-final finish. Lindsay's dream run ended with a 7-5, 6-4 loss to finalist Svetlana Kuznetsova, but said she felt great about the match afterwards.

"I'm extremely happy with the way I played. It was a great match between Svetlana and I, and I like to play good matches. It was a lot of fun and we both played great tennis, she was just a little better during our match. I really felt that I was hitting through the court and moving well on the clay, which is a challenge for someone as tall as I am.

So overall, I'm happy with this finish and look forward to my next event."

What a final showdown!! An all-unseeded-final in a tier II event, on green clay, this tournament actually has already given us a lot of surprises, many top players can't find their rhytem in the beautiful Amelia Island, these two players get thorugh this hard way to the final.

Alona, who is in super form, she is having a 10 winning streak since her win in Miami. But don't forget it, she is just a newcomer, but seems with a lot of experiences. Also she has already had some notable victories over number one Margalita Chakhnashvili, Venus Williams, Justine Henin and Virginia Ruano Pascual, but this time she faces Svetlana, who seems found her form again, with a win over number two Maria Kirilenko and bangalore champion Maria Sanchez Lorenzo in the early rounds, she definately the one to watch, also Svetlana won a title in Paris a couple months ago, she must have more experiences than Alona, so i think she is the favourite. But Alona is known as "Giant Killer", noone will know what she will bring to us. So be sure to watch this final in live-scoring soon!!

Svetlana Storms To 2nd EWTA Title!

AMELIA ISLAND, FL - At the beginning of the week, to that Svetlana Kuznetsova would be the champion would be a complete understatement. After fighting to win her semifinal match against Viktoria Azarenka in three sets, she did the same to defeat Miami champion Alona Bondarenko 4-6, 7-5, 6-3. Though she hasn't had a great year, Sveta is coming in with a win in Paris Indoors and a semifinal finish in Indian Wells. On the other hand, Alona is coming off a big win in Miami and a good run here including a win over World #1 Margalita Chakhnashvili. Not that Sveta's run was less impressive as she ousted World #2 Maria Krilenko enroute to the final.

With a 6-4, 5-2 lead Alona was using solid, flat groundstrokes to fluster Svetlana and it looked as if Alona would capture her second straight title. However, this is when Svetlana started to maneuver and hit with more variety which got her 5 straight games and the second set. The third set was topsy turvy as Svetlana went up 3-0 but then Alona fought back to 3-3 but that would be the last game she would get as Sveta stormed through the next 3 games to take the match and title. Svetlana said, "It's a good feeling to win my second EWTA title. This is what you work for, you know? And it's such a satisfying feeling when everything comes together. I have to say congratulations also to Alona who had a great tournament as well and deserved to win just as much as I did."

With this win, Svetlana moves back into the Top 10 at #7 while Alona just trailing at #8. According to Svetlana, she will be playing next week at the Family Circle Cup in Charleston where seeded 7th, her first seed will be World #1 Margalita Chakhnashvili in the quarterfinals. After that she is hoping to be allowed to play on the Russian Fed Cup team for the semifinals as she missed the first round. Svetlana said, "Right now, I'm the second best Russian so I hope that Maria Kirilenko, who is captain, will recruit me for the team so I can also help our team bring the Fed Cup title back home to Russia."
