Hey guys, I'm so excited I finally get the chance to blog from a tournament. I had one of the best weeks of my life last week, coming in as the number 3 seed, and then nearly losing the first round but eventually winning the whoe tournament, especially beating such great players like Mauresmo and Hantuchova. It feels good.

Well I only arrived here from Sweden yesterday and the plane ride was long but funny. Me and my coach laughed the whole time. We were just joking around the whole time so it was good. The funniest thing happened on the plane, the attendant (she couldn't speak English too well) came to me and aasked what I wanted for lunch, and I said chicken. She came out a few minutes later and was going to give me my food. She gasped and said "OH MY GOSH!!! You're MARIA SHARAPOVA!" It was so funny, she asked for my autograph and she was showing it off to the other attendants and they all asked me for my autograph. Even some people in the other cabins.

We had the player party today, it was great fun. There was a lot of players there, it was nice to see them off the tennis court. It feels good to wear something casual and wear some heels instead of tennis shoes. The highlight of the day was Novak [Djokovic], he's the funniest guy ever!! Anyway I have something to show you tomorrow. I'm so excited about it!!!

So Ashley is not here at the moment, she is playing in the other tournament, so I am pairing up with a good friend of mine, Maria Kirilenko. She's such a great player and we will start practicing tomorrow.

First Practice On Clay with Maria

Hello guys, it's Maria again.

So it's the second day here for the other Maria and I and we had our first practice session together. It was great fun, we had a lot of laughs. Maria's coach and mine had a talk and they seem to get along well while, I have always got along with Maria.

Coming off a godo week on the hard court, this green clay court doesn't seem that much different. It's just like a hardcourt with some clay sprinkled on it (:lol:). I think we are a great team, because I'm solid from the back of the court and Maria is a great net player. So it balances out. We will be a team to look out for this week. Anyway, after the practice session, we went to lunch and shopping. We did a lot of shopping, we spent so much money. Haha, but it was good fun. We then went to Starbucks and we went back to the hotel to rest for a bit.

We went to another player's conference, this time it was together. And then we went to dinner at a beautiful Italian restaurant. [Picture ^^^ Top of page]. The food was great and we enjoyed our time. We took a few pictures and people in the restaurant were asking for pictures, autographs and it was a great night. Everyone was really friendly. Anyway, it's a bit late now and I better get to sleep. Goodnight.

Mauresmo arrives at Charleston

Top seed Mauresmo arrives at Charleston for her first clay event this season. She received a bye in the first round, and is scheduled to play Dementieva or Salerni in the second round. Mauresmo, who was undefeated on rebound ace and won the Australian Open, lost to 3rd seed Sharapova in semi-finals last week in Stockholm. In doubles, Mauresmo and Chakvetadze lost in final to the pair Dokic/Hantuchova.

"It won't be easy for me this week, cause I'm not a clay specialist. But I think I'm ready. I need to prepare myself for the second Grand Slam of the year. I hope I'll be able to win a couple of matches here".

Sharapova's name is in it :woohoo:

Hi all :wavey:,

The draw for this week is finally out and I'm quiet happy with it. I am number 4 seed and in Amelie's half again. :rolleyes:. She gets a bye in the first round though. I'm playing against Jill Craybas first. Maria [Kirilenko], my doubles partner, will be playing against Ana Ivanovic and she in the other half of the draw and hopefully we can meet in the finals. Also in her half are Justine Henin and Steffi Graf, who were the finalist of last week's clay court tournament. So I wish Maria the best of luck. In my half, there are 3 other Russians. Anna Chakvetadze, Svetlana Kuznetsova and Elena Dementieva.

Anyway, I was there for the draw ceremony, and it was great. Seeing it live so I can see that Warren is not actually giving his favourites an easy road. It's good to know that he hasn't been sleeping with any of the players or their coaches... well at least not for a favour.

Another practice day today as we will play our first singles matches tomorrow. Anyway, I'm going for an early mark today.

My First Clay Court Win!!!

Hi guys,
I won my first match on clay this season. I played Jill Craybas today, and she was a tough opponent, I was down a break in the second set but pulled through in straight sets. I'm so happy to get that first win under my belt. It gives me a bit of confidence. Well 3 out of 5 Russians in the draw have made it through. Unfortunately, one of them wasn't my friend Maria [Kirilenko] She lost to Ana Ivanovic in 2 tiebreak sets which was heartbreaking for me to see, but she said that she will keep supporting me and hopefully we will have a good run in the doubles also.

Anyway, there's going to be at least one Russian in the semifinals as I am playing against Svetlana Kuznetsova, and if Elena Dementieva was to upset the world's number 1, we will have a Russian in the finals. It's going to be a tough match tomorrow, but hopefully I can bring my best to the table and hopefully win. Svetlana didn't play today as she got a walkover so I got the advantage of playing that first match and I know what I'm getting, so maybe that would also help me. Maria [Kirilenko] will also be there supporting and maybe that would help me too.

It's a little late now and I think I better sleep, bed is calling.

Hello :wavey:,

I won my match today against Kuznetsova, and guess what.. I won!!!
It was very close though. She was a good player, especally on clay, her favourite surface. So it was good to get a win. Anyway, I'll tell you my whole day.

I woke up at 7.30 this morning to go for a jog with Chris, my coach. And then we got back at the hotel at around 9. And then we ate breakfast, well I ate breakfast. He has this superstition that he's not allowed to eat before I play my match (what if I play a night match :lol:). Anyway, we went back to the hotel room to stretch and turned on the TV and Elena and Amelie was playing and I would have to play against the winner. I watched the first about 20 minutes of it when Elena was leading 5-3 and was about to serve out the set. WOW was she playing great, if I win today, whoever I have to play against tomorrow will be a hard one to beat.

I went to have a 10 minutes practice on the courts and after that I had to wait for my match. Elena won, 6-3 6-2 and we saw each other at the locker room and I congratulated her. It was a great win. Especially over the world number 1.

I started my match beautifully, I was up 3-0 in the first set and I thought I was going so well that I lost my focus that I lost the next 5 games. But and then I regained my composure that I won the next 4 games and took out the first set 7-5... Phew. In the second set it was a different story, I was so scared at 5-4 when Svetlana had the chance to take out the set and take it to a decider. But, again I was lucky to escape with that and escape with the match. 7-5 7-5. It was a great win considering that her favourite surface is clay. Today I figured something out. I can use the dropshot and it is SOOO effective. Anyway, we have a Russian in the final since I will be playing against Elena Dementieva tomorrow and I am also excited to play my first doubles match with Maria. Wish us luck. After the match Maria and I had a few more hits just to prepare us tomorrow and we went back to the hotel. I got ready for my press conference and I went.

After that we had dinner and then here I am. I better sleep now to prepare me for a long day tomorrow. BYE!!

Justine Will Face Steffi Graf for the second week running this time in the SF on Charleston (I)

Just a week after claiming her first tiel in Amelia Island Justine is still looking very good on the clay, She is the second seed in the tier one event in Charleston, with the top seed being Rebound Ace Queen Amelie Mauresmo. Justine met with Meilen Tu in the first round The match was fairly routine with Justine racing through the opening set 6-1 finishing with a bakkhand down the line winner. in the second it was much tougher for justine but she powered through 7-5 with another beautiful backhand down the line winner.

Justine was then to face Ana Ivanovic in the Quarter finals, It turned out to be an easy match for the Belgian, shwing a dazzling display on groundstroke winners to race through the opening set 6-0 ending it with an ace. In the second set Ana really started to pick up her game, firing off some huge forehands to race ahead 3-1, however Justine quickly found a solution to her problems and reeled off 5 straight games and finished the match with another backhand down the line winner, 6-0 6-3 the final score in 48 minutes.

Justine has taken a little break from doubles as her coach wasn't present so she decided it would be best to just stick with her singles, but she has stated she will be back on the doubles courts next week.

Q: Another easy Win justine, what were the keys to the match for you?
JH: Well Ana has a very big forehand so i knew i would have to put a lot of pressure on her backhand, it worked very well in the first set she seemed very out of rhythm, she started very well in the second with her forehand, so when i was down 3-1 i decided to approach to her backhand a lot and it really worked well she really lost all her confidence.

Q: You haven't lost a set on clay yet, are you confident that will continue?
JH: It is true i have been very fortunate to win all my matches in 2 sets, there have been a few close sets that could have gone either way it will be very difficult for sure. I now play Steffi again, and I know she will have worked hard on her game since last week so she will be very tough. I am also a little worried about Dementieva at this tournament I know she is a great player, and she bet the top seed already this week.

Q: You play Steffi Again do you expect the same result?
JH: I will defnintely not expect the same result as last week, i know she is a very tough player and she will ahve worked hard since her loss last week and I expect to see a very different Steffi out there tomorrow. I just really hope I can play my game and make another final.

Q: Where has your coach been, and why aren't you playing doubles here?
JH: Well that is something I would laso like to know, he just went missing about a week ago and suddenly he has returned, he has not told me where he went but we are back into our practice and working hard. I chose not to play doubles here because I really needed my coach to organise my partner for me but he wasn't here so i missed out, i will be back on the doubles court next week though.

Henin Cruises Into Another Final

Justine eased passed Steffi Graf and will face Dementieva In the Final

Just last week Henin defeated Graf in the final of Amelia Island with an emphatic scoreline, this week the German put up more of a battle but still didn't do enough to stop another straight sets Henin victory. Henin displayed the form that took her to the title last week easily streaking ahead to a 5-1 lead using her powerful groundstrokes to unsettle her opponenet. Steffi fought hard and got a little bit of luck to save set point at 5-2 and went on to bring it to 5-3. Henin regained her composure to seal the set with a Huge forehand forced error 6-3. The second set started better for Graf, the two exchanged service breaks and Henin got a little of the luck this time to go ahead 3-1. The lead was too much for the German to recover and the set ended with a delicate drop shot to take the set and match 6-3 6-3.

Awaiting Justine in the final is Russian Elena Dementieva, who has previously beaten Henin (their overall H2H is 1-1) and is in punishing form this week on the green clay. she defeated the in-form Maria Sharapova who is fresh off a title last week in sweden. The match will definitely be a battle and Henin will not be underestimating her opponent who is also an expert claycourter.

Justine commented on her upcoming final after her match:
"Well another chance for a title tomorrow, Elena is a very tough competitior so I will have to be at my best level if I want to win, I would really love to get another title under my belt it will really help with the confidence. I'll just go out tommorrow and give my best effort and hopefully it will be enough."
