Europe rocks May 3rd, 2008, 09:45 PM Sugiyama survives Slovakian scare
http://newsimg.bbc.co.uk/media/images/40693000/jpg/_40693998_tennis_300.jpg
Ai Sugiyama stretches for a forehand in her first match against Dominika Cibulkova
Ai Sugiyama managed to pull through her opening match at the Season-Ending Championships in Madrid today, despite a second set nightmare and facing three match points in her tie against Slovakian alternate Dominika Cibulkova.
Sugiyama started the match as the slight favourite and made the most of Cibulkova's nerves to secure the opening set 6-0, making just three unforced errors and losing only one point behind her serve. However, the Slovakian upped her game in the second and the Japanese player appeared to lose the plot as her game went into self-destruct. Cibulkova punished the mistakes of Sugiyama and took the second set 6-0, before the next bit of drama unfurled.
Sugiyama was the first player to be broken in the final set, losing her serve tamely to love at 1-1 with a double fault. Very rarely is one break alone enough in women's tennis, but today it looked like it would be one of those occassions, as from that point on neither woman could make any impact on the serve of their opponent. This left Cibulkova serving for the match at 5-4. With Cibulkova serving at 40-15, Sugiyama came back into life and saved both matchpoints with ferocious return winners on the line, leaving the Slovak completely stunned. She managed to forge another match point, but a forehand error saw her miss another chance. Two more holds followed, before Sugiyama eventually used her greater experience to pull through 6-0 0-6 7-6 (7-3).
"That was so tough out there today. Domi made it really tough for me, I had no idea I would have to save three match points. We are the top teams this year and to have us all together competing for such an illustrious title, the atomsphere is electric. I've already had success at Wimbledon and Eastbourne. I hope I can have more here."

Sorry for my angry state
Im sorry you think that but im trying to make this run as smoothly as possible. I have exams starting Tuesday for the rest of the week so I am basically just fitting this in as they are a priority.
I told you last week you can send points for different teams in the same PM. No where in your PM did you state these points were for Japan. 2 rounds on the same day is the only way this is going to fit in. Again, you could send two lots of points in the same PM if you not going to be able to change points between rounds. The schedule hasnt been a problem for anyone else.
300pts was decided at the start of the year. Youve had since mid last year to bring up any queries regarding the points system so I wont be blamed there.
Im sorry that you are pulling out and understand your angry state but im trying my best to make this run smoothly and i think it is being ran smoothly too.

Poland stun Australia and move into the YEC Final. This could be Polands best win on the tour ever. After the first set, it looked like it was going to be a routine win for the Aussie, but Aga counter-attacked and scouted brilliantly as she had enough in reserve to take the victory. Mess of a match, but Japan played almost flawlessly in the frist and final sets to book their place in the YEC Final. We havnt seen Ai play that good since being crowned Wimbledon champion but shes delivered here and gets the chance to face Poland in the final for a place at the YEC. Nicely Done.

Japan end their season on a high with the YEC title! Their gameplan fitted perfectly with the Poles for them as they seal their fifth title on tour. Theyve had a great week and shown that they are one of the very best teams on the WTT tour. Big hug to Poland for a great week, but congrats to Japan on a birlliant performance.

Japanese star Ai Sugiyama hits a forehand in the opening set of the final of the Season-ending Championships
The first season of WTT officially came to an end today, as the last shot of the Season ending Championships in Madrid was hit today, with one team rejoicing in glory; the other in misery. On this occassion, it was a battle of the generations, with Polish teenager Agnieszka Radwanska, seeded five, taking on Japanese veteran Ai Sugiyama, seeded four, for the title.
Both teams had to battle their way into the final and there was no clear favourite: Japan had the experience of tasting success at Wimbledon, but Poland received a large amount of crowd support. In the first set, Sugiyama was all over the serve of Radwanska, breaking in the opening game to love and keeping up the momentum. On the other side of the net, the Pole could not make any inroads on the Sugiyama serve, who often made her way to the net to quickly finish the points. Sugiyama managed to serve out for the set at 5-2 with a forehand winner going back behind Radwanska.
The Pole was desperate to make the match competitive and upped her level, whilst that of Sugiyama dipped. Three breaks of serve were enough as Radwanska powered through 6-0, hitting just 2 unforced errors and hitting 100% of first serves in. However, it wasn't enough in the final set as a rejuvenated Sugiyama returned to the court. Gone was the complacency and nerves that ruled her in the second set, as the Japanese player was like a brick wall, constantly hitting the ball back until Radwanska produced the error or could not run down that one extra ball. Finally, after 1 hour and 41 minutes of play, Sugiyama obtained her fifth break of the Radwanska serve to take the title 6-2 0-6 6-1, with the Pole perpetrating yet another error to end a miserable day for her.
"I came into this final knowing I had a really good chance, I just had to keep my head. I know that Agnieszka is clever, but I think that she struggled out there to deal with the occassion. This victory makes me so pleased as for the entire year I had a lot of people doubting me and the rest of my team, saying we didn't deserve to be ranked so high, but I've proven that I can play well against the top teams and that we are one of the top teams. I would like to thank everyone who has played on the tour this year and produced so many wonderful matches and given me so many lovely memories. I want to say well done to Agnieszka for reaching this final, well done to my coach and the rest of my team and Patch for organising the tour. I can't wait to see what will happen next year," Sugiyama said on-court, following her victory.
