Another stong list for Chatlottesville. I may try and head down there this year if it remains so strong. :bounce:

I only got to pop in for a a little bit yesterday......so there's not too much to report...... :D
I did see Beth's match from the end of the first set and she looked really good - about as fit as I think i've ever seen her and quite consistent.....keeping the balls nice and deep with a good bit of topspin. Kim pretty much self-destructed after losing the first set - she was questioning lots of line calls, talking to herself, pretty much getting upset when her plan didn't work. And her plan was pretty much "play like Sharapova"......hitting the ball as hard as she could from side to side, shrieking all the while.....unfortunately she's not Sharapova and so.......it didn't quite work for her - Beth got just about everything back that Kim threw at her.
I also watched a bit of the Haynes/Washington doubles match.......which they must have won! (they were up a set and a break when I was around). Mashona still looks young (isn't she about 30?!) and the two of them made a great team - they clearly outclassed the other girls but there were some fun exchanges at the net nevertheless.
From the looks of it, it'll be Yanina and Beth for the title..........good luck to everyone though!

I was there for the singles matches today. Highly recommended: the best-attended and most fan-friendly Challenger I've ever been to, and a beautiful day to boot.

Gordon has a huge serve and a huge return. She lost her serve only once in the whole match and saved numerous BPs with big bombs. But she was also getting pretty lucky today: numerous shots which she just barely got her racket on were finding the lines, frustrating Wickmayer to no end. After 5 games Wickmayer was already throwing her racket; she is very fiery: lots of "come on" and fist pumps. She got one warning and one code violation for coaching, even though, according to her, her dad was "just telling [her] to come on" and "he's never touched a racket in his life." Yanina has big shots, in fact this match was high-quality and fast-paced. But Alexis wasn't missing and Yanina was a bit too sloppy on the big points. It was closer than the score, but Gordon was able to pound down shots, particularly screaming forehand service returns, when it mattered. That's a Top 100 game if it's always there; so is Wickmayer's, but it wasn't enough today.

That made up for the desultory Puchkova-Mattek match. Both players had numerous service games of multiple double faults; Puchkova had one game where she hit three in a row to immediately get to 0-40, and she probably won that game, because that's the kind of match it was. Mattek retrieves wonderfully and has a fine drop shot which she used to near perfection, and was up 4-2 in the final set. But Olga was able to draw her into the net with some severe angles and then, once there, passed her methodically until she reeled off four straight games for the match. That impressed me because I thought she would go in the tank after dropping serve for 2-4. Match point was case in point: Bethanie tried the dropshot one time too many, as Olga caught up to it and passed her for the win.

Olga is also batshit crazy. :hearts: She asked the umpire why "everything is this far out" [holds fingers 1 cm apart] in relation to close calls, asked the crowd what time it was as they were deep into the third set (it was a 2.5 hour match), and to top it off, freaked out in the clubhouse after the match because she lost her Blackberry and, quoth Olga, "I CAN'T LIVE WITHOUT IT!!!"

It should be a fine final tomorrow.

Forehand was winning the points off the returns, but the best shot has to be the serve. She places it very well and it is fast -- at least ITF-level fast.

I wouldn't even say she was "powerful" -- she's not very big, fairly average build(Wickmayer was much taller). Her reaction time is great and she was able to get her racket head on the ball and, like I said, got a lot of balls back that a player without such innate anticipation would have framed. That got into Wickmayer's head.

But the serve, yeah...it's a doozy. Best service out of the four today by far.
