Russian player and third ranked Svetlana Kuznetsova has reached to the destination for the upcoming Estoril Open,a tier III clay event.She is the first seed in the tournament and has a first round bye before facing either American Meileen Tu or her countrywoman,Maria Kirilenko in the quarterfinals.

The following is an interview with the #2 Russian after her arrival.

Q: So how do feel now?
S: Oh,I'm pretty happy to reach here in Portugal.The people here are so warm and welcomed me.Perhaps I'm the first seed and I get all the spotlight(laugh).Anyway,I hope to travel around here if I have the chance.

Q: You've been playing in USA for the past two weeks.So how do you think you're playing at the moment?
S: Yeah.I think I did pretty well since I had not much expectations joining the tour and I just wanted to play my game and be a good player.Somehow my positive attitude helped me with my game and I got some satisfying results there,reaching finals in Indian Wells and quarterfinals in Miami,and of course reaching #3 on the tour at the moment.So I hope to maintain and definitely will be trying to improve myself from time to time.Hopefully I'll get some really good advice from anyone about my game someday because I'm still not pretty confident with it.

Q: What do you think about this event?Why do you select this tournament as your first official event?
S: Well,the first clay event of the season and the reason I've chosen here is because I'm more comfortable on clay than the other event which is also held on Rebound Ace at the same week.

Q: Have you check your draw and what do you think about it?
S: Yes,I just checked shortly after my arrival here.Seeded first and a first round bye.I don't think I can ask for more,can I?(laugh) But the quarterfinals would be a good test for me.I may face Maria (Kirilenko) whom also plays solid on clay,so I'll try to get some more practice before the match.If I'm lucky enough to be in the semifinals,it'll be another challenge for me.It'll be either Althea(Gibson) or Steffi(Graf) but I favour Steffi's chance in the semifinal since she's a better clay courter than Althea I assume.So it's a pretty good draw I believe.At least I manage to avoid Ana(Ivanovic) and Elena(Dementieva) who both love clay like me.So I hope I'll be awaiting one of them in the finals.(laugh) Only if I won my half of course.

Q: What do you think the other clay court experts who chose to play in Gold Coast,instead of playing here?
S: Well,I don't think is a big issue here.They have their rights to pick where to play,what they want to play or how they want to play.It's their choice to do whatever they want as long as they like their decision.Maybe they just want to gain more ranking points as it's a higher tier event even though they don't like to play on Rebounce Ace.Personally I don't think is a big deal anyway and I'm actually pretty relief they didn't choose here,so I have more chance of winning the title.(laugh)

Q: We got the news that you're playing doubles as well in this event.
S: Oh yeah.I have paired up with one of my best friend,Elena(Dementieva) and she agreed to play doubles with me.So I am glad we're playing together here and hopefully we'll do well in doubles too.

Q:Hello Ashley. How are you feeling about your chances here in Estoril?

A:Well obviously clay's not my best surface but I'm gonna give it my best shot! I didnt play very well in Miami, but I had a great week in Indian Wells and I hope to build on that.

Q: How do you feel about your draw?

A:Obviously I have a bye in the first round, but I'm feeling good about my chances in the next round, against Nadia(Petrova) or Jill. If I win that match I would most likely play Elena(Dementieva) who absoloutly loves clay so that would be a very tough match to win, but I'm confident.

Q:What do you think the strengths and weaknesses of your game are?

A: My movement and consistency are definitly some of my strengths, and as for weaknesses probably just not having as my power as some of the other girls.

Q: How do you like it here in Portugal?

A:I havent been able to do much exploring, but it seems very nice here!

Q: Are you playing doubles?

A:Yes with Maria Kirilenko. It's kinda funny because you'll see Jill and Tzipi or Nadia and Eleni practicing and there'll be no one watching, and Maria and I practice and all the men are watching(Laughs)

Az első ellenfele a szintén salakspecialista Ana Ivanovic volt, akivel egy igen szoros és látványos meccset sikerült játszania Elenának.

Most halljunk egy pár szót tőle is a meccsről:

"Nagyon nehéz mérkőzés volt, ahogyan arra számítottam is. Ana nagyon tehetséges játékos és bármikor képes bravúrokra. Szerencsére ma nem tette."

"A mérkőzés jól indult mert egy korai brékkel már 3-1-re vezettem amikor Ana elkezdett jobban összpontosítani és feljött 3-3-ra. Azután 5-4-nél sikerült elvennem a szerváját és ezzel megnyertem az első szettem."

"A második szett döcögősen indult nagyon és pillanatok alatt duplabrékhátrányba kerültem, de sikerült fordítanom Ana idegeskedését kihasználva."

"Összességében azt kell hogy mondjam hogy jól játszottam és úgy érzem bármire képes lehetek ezen a borításon. SAFINA HAPPY WITH DEBUT

Dinara Safina has said she is "sort of pleased" with her debut on the WSC tour this week in Estoril. Safina made the quarter finals where she lost to finalist Steffi Graf and is hoping to make her mark this season which is her first. On the eve of the Estoril Final our Robshots reporter managed to catch up with Dinara just before she jetted out.

Q:How tough did you find your first tournament?

It was a real eye opener, some things I just wasn't prepared for and others I also learned from. I will feel a lot more comfortable afer a few tournaments.

Q: What lessons did you learn?

Just to see consumate professionals like Steffi go about her work made me see where I need to be and how focussed and methodical a top notch player is in the WSC

Q: Steffi has made the final, does that give you confidence?

To know that I was beaten by someone who has gone all the way does make the loss a bit easier to swallow but alos leaves you with the though, I wonder if i beat her would that be me ......

Q: Is clay one of your preferred surfaces?

It is probably my second favourite, I did hope to do well on it, yes.

Q: Would you say you achieved what you hoped to here?

Well I won my first tour match so that was one goal, I was hoping for at least semi-finals, but maybe next time.

Q: Do you feel you have what it takes to be a force at this level?

That is a hard one to answer so early on, I feel i can compete and compete consistantly, hopefully that evoles into something bigger and better

Awesome Lena won again

The #2 seed Elena Dementieva won her second matches in Estoril, too. Her opponent was Nadia Petrova and if we see the result, we have to say that it was a great and of course a tough match between the two Russian. In the first set the world #4 played better tennis and that's why she could finish this set. In the second set Lena lost her game and hit 10 DFs so it's not surprise that she coudln't win any games, she lost this set to love. After that in the third set Nadia had BPs at 4-3 and probably she would have won this match if she hadn't hit the ball into the middle of the net. After this point, Nadia lost 10 points in a row and she lost the match as well.

"Well, I'm glad but I know that I didn't play my best game and it's not so good before the final. Steffi is a really good player and I know that I have to fight till the last point of the match. I hope that I will win that points."

In only the third even of the inaugral season of WSC tennis Steffi Graf has managed to display an array of all-court play and skills to reach the Final of the first claycourt tournament. The tour began with the prestigous Indian Wells and Miami double and while Graf showed some signs of promise her results betrayed her potential.

This week, in Portugal, Graf seems to be more at home on the clay where she can contstruct her points while utilising her natural guille and mental superiority. Graf has always been a tactics player and this week she has been incredibly patient while slicing her backhand, keeping it low and difficult for opponents, and waiting for the killer forehand shot and then moving in behind it. So far it has worked.

Now Steffi finds herself against Elena Dementieva in the final in Estoril and it promises to be a thrilling match. Elena favours the clay slightly more than Graf as she seems to be able to run for days but Steffi is not one to be underestimated.

"Ye, I'm thrilled to be playing my first final. I'm just kind of slowly building up my results, you know, figuring out my place on this tour and working towards improving, for sure. I think the players at the top right now are not exactly representative of talent, per se. Especially the #1, you know, I don't feel like Sam Stosur is the true #1 on the tour. I think by the time the Australian Open comes we will see a new #1 and a true champion. That won't be me either, I don't think. I'm not quite ready yet; I'm trying different things each week, which is why I'm playing on three different surfaces and I'll be travelling a lot. Hopefully that will work well for me."

When asked what her goals were for the season Steffi was quick to answer: "Erm, ye, definately Wimbledon. I'm definately all about the long term right now. Not the short term. I haven't rushed anything, I've been patient and relaxed and kind of took a step back. I aim to peak at Wimbledon and hopefully win the title there. That is what my season hinges on, I guess. Or at least for me it does. Obviously I will be giving 100% at every single tournament, every single match, you know, but ultimately Wimbledon is exactly where I want to win and exactly where I want to be. I just really, really hope I can get there and do a good job. I'll definately play as many tournaments as possible on grass to improve that aspect of my game.

I'm excited, for sure."
