when you combine surface points, there really is no strategy unless the doubles players know each others attributes :shrug:

Amelie Mauresmo arrives in Gold Coast to contest the Mondial Women's Hardcourts, the first tournament of the season on Rebound Ace. She will be the 3rd seed this week. After reaching the quarterfinals at Indian Wells, and the semifinals in Miami, the Frenchwoman enters the Australian tournament with the firm intention of improving her results. Considering this surface as her best one, she will be one of the favorites for this open. Good luck Amé!

J. Henin Still Winless In Singles Play

Belgian Justine Henin is still seeking her first singles match win on the WSC Tour. She came awfully close in Indian Wells almost snatching victory from Marta Domachowska before falling 6-1 6-7 3-6. The next week in Miami she was comprehensively beaten by Dementieva in straight sets. It has been a disappointing start to the season in singles play for Henin, but she has had some success in doubles mainly because of the stellar play of her partner Daniela Hantuchova.

Henin is looking to turn this around on the Rebound Ace surface used mainly in Australia, It is not her favouorite surface to play on but she is more than adept on it. Justine has been working tirelessly on the practice courts trying to find a solution to her problem, hopefully she won't have to wait too much longer for her debut win.

There are several players who love this surface and they will be the ones to look out for during the RA season. Most notably Amelie Mauresmo, who has listed Rebound Ace as her favourite surface, couple that with her outstanding play and cunning strategic mind and she is the #1 player to look out for on Rebound Ace. Samantha Stosur and Marta Domachowska are also excellent players on the Rebound Ace surface, stosur will be especially difficult given her home crowd support.

Justine will face off with her doubles partner Daniela Hantuchova in the First Round on the Gold Coast Tournament, With Miami champion Maria Sharapova looming in the next round.

After a bye in the first round, Amelie Mauresmo began her tournament at Gold Coast with an easy victory Monday at the Mondial Women's Hardcourts. Mauresmo, of France, lost just one game to defeat Serbian Jelena Jankovic 6-1, 6-0, on another cloudy, chilly day in Australia. In the quarterfinals, she will play PC Player Elena Vesnina.

Q: Amelie, what do you think of your match today?
Amelie: Well, obviously it was a perfect match really for me. Everything was perfect, the serve, the backhand, the forehand, I don't know if I can be better than that.

Q: Is it the best match of your career?
Amelie: Yes, sure, it was! But you know, I've had a very short career thus far, so it doesn't really mean much.

Q: Amelie, can I ask you a question in French?
Amelie: Bien sûr, avec plaisir! C'est vraiment rare de parler français dans ce genre d'interview.

Q: Comment vous sentez-vous après cette victoire facile?

Australian world number one Samantha Stosur has breezed through her first match on the Gold Coast; comfortably beating American Serena Williams 6-3 6-3. The Gold Coast local - who was supported by many family members and friends - looked extremely comfortable on the rebound ace and has now booked a meeting with China's Na Li.

Q: Sam, a pretty straight-forward win there; how did it feel?
SS: Yeah look, I felt really good out there. I felt really strong off both wings and really took my chances... So yeah, I'm very happy with my game; I'm expecting a great week from myself.

Q: Last week in Miami you lost in the first round. How important was today's win for you?
SS: Yeah for sure. After winning Indian Wells I was kind of hounded by media you know, wanting to know everything about me. It was a bit hard for me to deal with that originally and I think that may have led to me not concentrating fully in last weeks match... However, I took some time out while Miami finished and I think I know how to deal with the pressure now; I realise it's a good thing now.

Q: How did it feel playing in front of your home crowd?
SS: Oh it felt amazing. You know to be here as the top seed is incredible enough as it is; but you know, to have all my mates and family come out today and watch me was amazing. It cerainly inspired me to play some top tennis.

Q: You next play China's Na Li; your thoughts going into that match?
SS: Umm you know, I don't know a lot about her. I know she's an agressive girl and can pull some big shots out when needed, but that's about it... Australian world number one Samantha Stosur has won a tight two set match against China's Li Na to advance into the Mondial Women's Hardcourts semifinals. Like in her first round match, the Gold Coast resident had all the crowd support with many friends coming out to see her progress. Stosur won 7-5 6-4 in 1 hour and 17 minutes and will next face Poland's Marta Domachowska.

"Once again, I felt really good out there... Na played a great match and really took her chances and came forward a lot... I feel like you know, I'm playing some great tennis and yeah, I certinaly think I could be the champion this week... fingers crossed!"

"So I next face Domachowska. She's been having a great week her... I watched a bit of her match against Salerni and I was impressed. She's hitting the ball really solid and moving well; so I'm expecting a tough match and hopefully I can pull through!"

Home favourite Samantha Stosur has won a tight three-set battle to win through to the Mondial Women's Harcourts final today. Battling Poland's Marta Domachowska, Stosur prevailed 4-6 6-4 6-4 in just under two hours. She will face France's rebound ace specialist Amelie Mauresmo in the final.

Interview transcript

Q: Sam, bit of a rough start today but you pulled through, how does it feel?
SS: Yeah great! Obviously it was very frustrating for me at the start to see Marta playing such incredible tennis and not being able to do too much myself. But, you know, I knew that she couldn't keep that level up for the whole match; so I waited, and eventually was able to kind of find some form and really get myself involved in the match.

Q: This is your home event; what would it mean for you to win the title?
SS: Oh god, well that's the dream right there... You know, I love playing at home whether it be here or just a challenger. I just love being on the Gold Coast, so if I was were to win the title, it was just be amazing.

Q: In the final you face Mauresmo; your thoughts on this match-up?
SS: Yeah, well obviously Mausremo loves this surface, it really works well with her game. So she's probably the favourite going in tomorrow based on her easier results this week; but you know, I love this surface too and will have the crowd behind me, so I know it's in me to pull through. I'm going to have to play some top tennis tomorrow and win or lose, I hope we put on a great show for all the fans.

Q: Have you set any goals for this year?
SS: Umm, immediately, I want to have a good run at the Open for sure. I just can't wait to hopefully step onto Rod Laver and yeah, hopefully have a good tourny there. Long-term, I want to make the YEC's. You know, that's tough but I think so far I've put myself in a good position and hopefully I can achieve that with some more consistent results this year.

3rd seed Amelie Mauresmo wins her first title on WSC at Gold Coast, defeating top seed and Miami champion Samantha Stosur 6-3 6-3 in final. In doubles, Mauresmo and Chakvetadze lost in final in 2 tight sets to Henin and Hantuchova, 7-6 7-6.

"I'm very happy to win here today. It's my first title, and I hope it won't be the only one! It was very intense in the final. Sam was very confident, after her victory last week at Miami. On my side I was feeling quite good all the week. You know, I just tried not to think about her and her game, and performance and whatever she does. You know, I just tried to keep focused on myself and my game and tried to play every point 100%, because I knew that she is a kind of player who can just come back any time. I'm not really familiar with her game, but I keep focused on myself, and it worked. Maybe I was a bit tired later in the other final, in doubles with Anna. It was a close match, too bad we lost it. But we can't win every week, we won last week already. Sorry Anna, and congrats Dani and Juju. Also congrats to Sam who played very well this week again," said Mauresmo. "I have a question... Why do the other girls keep getting "+2" when they answer an interview? And what does it mean?" she asked.
