Jankovic cruises to Quarters

Serbs Jelena Jankovic, had to play two matches today, but cruised through both of them in straight sets to make it to her first Quarterfinals.

In the first match she had to play against Russian Maria Kirilenko, and made a quick start, jumping to a 3-0 lead. Maria Kirilenko got on the board following a hold of serve but Jelena Jankovic had to fight off 2 break points to hold her own serve and lead 4-1. Kirilenko then once again struggled on serve and got broken to love and Jankovic lead 5-1. Jankovic had 2 set points on her serve but couldn't convert and Kirilenko took advantage of that to break Jankovic and stayed in the set. Jankovic was frustrated after that and Kirilenko got the better of Jankovic to hold.

Jankovic then once again tried to serve out the set. Jankovic served 2 aces and an unreturnable and had 3 set points. She converted on the first one when outplayed Kirilenko in a long rally and won the set 6-3.

But the second set was a different start for Jankovic as she quickly went down 2-5. Kirilenko had one set point but Jankovic served an ave to keep herself in the set, she eventually won the game and trailed 3-5. Kirilenko then tried to serve out the set, but Jankovic showed her fighting qualities and broke to love. 4-5. Jankovic needed to hold serve to avoid losing the set, and she did it with style, her crisp backhands and amazing volleys won her the game to love and is now back on serve at 5-5. After that, Kirilenko never showed her form that she showed at the beginning of that set, winning only 1 point from the next 2 games. Jankovic won that second set 7-5 when she hit a backhand crosscourt winner. She won her first match in the WSC and was ecstatic.

Two and half hours later, she had to play her 2nd match, and it was against American Ashley Harkleroad.

Jankovic showed that she was a little bit tired at the beginning, and Ashley took advantage to lead 3-0. Jankovic once again showed her fighting qualities and brought it back to level 3-3. Both players was strong on serve and held their own serves and it was 5-5. Jankovic held to love and lead 6-5. Harkleroad was then feeling the pressure as she served to stay in the set, it looked as though she was going to take it to a tiebreak when 40-15 up. But an amazing return winner off the second serve brought it back to 40-30. A shaky serve from Harkleroad, brought it back to deuce when she doubles faulted. Harkleroad double faulted again and gave Jankovic a set point. Jankovic finished off the set following a long baseline rally before Jankovic changed it and did an amazing drop shot winner.

The second set was a longer battle, with both holding serve and when one got ahead with a break, the other would break back to level it again. It was 6-5 to Harkleroad and Jankovic had to fight off 6 set points, to stay in the match in a really long game. But Jankovic took it to a tiebreak.
Jankovic won the tiebreak easily to take it 7-0 when she hit a crisp backhand down-the-line.

Jankovic is now in the Quarterfinals and will face Elena Dementieva, another Russian, who sent Australian Samantha Stosur packing earlier withan impressive 6-4 6-2 scoreline.

Thank you, yeh, I played well in both my matches.

Talk about your first match against Kirilenko.
Ohh, well you know, I started well in the first set, and I was up 5-1 and I got a little too confident and lost the next the next 2 games before I knew it. But I regrouped and focused and won that first set, luckily.

The second set was a little harder, you know, she raised her game at the beginning, I was struggling with that. But you know, I fought back and I won it in straight sets, and I think if I would've won in three sets, I think I would've been too tired to play the 2nd round.

What about your second match, against Harkleroad?
Well, she is a good player and she played well. But I raised my game from the first match and I kept myself together you know. It was just one of those days where everything goes well for you. So I'm happy about that. But it was a close match.

Next up is another Russian, Dementieva, how are you feeling? Are you confident, what would be the key thing for you to do?
Yeh, another Russian, there are so many Russians playing tennis it's ridiculous you know *laughter*. Well obviously I've never played against her before but I've seen her play and she's a really good player. I hope I win you know, it's a good feeling. The key thing for me mainly is my backhand and volleys and try to get a lot of first serves in because I know she has a good return. But you know, I want to go out there for some fun.

You are also playing doubles with Lindsay Davenport this week.
Yeh, I am, she beat me last week, so I'm still angry with her about that. *laughter* No just joking. It was a good match, she played well. But yeh, it's great to have the honour of playing with someone so great like that. You know, we're both big hitters, she has a good serve and I have a decent volleys. So I think it will work out well.
